Magnetic versus nonmagnetic doping effects on the magnetic ordering in the Haldane chain compound PbNi2V2O8
A study of an impurity driven phase-transition into a magnetically ordered
state in the spin-liquid Haldane chain compound PbNi2V2O8 is presented. Both,
macroscopic magnetization as well as 51V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)
measurements reveal that the spin nature of dopants has a crucial role in
determining the stability of the induced long-range magnetic order. In the case
of nonmagnetic (Mg2+) doping on Ni2+ spin sites (S=1) a metamagnetic transition
is observed in relatively low magnetic fields. On the other hand, the magnetic
order in magnetically (Co2+) doped compounds survives at much higher magnetic
fields and temperatures, which is attributed to a significant anisotropic
impurity-host magnetic interaction. The NMR measurements confirm the predicted
staggered nature of impurity-liberated spin degrees of freedom, which are
responsible for the magnetic ordering. In addition, differences in the
broadening of the NMR spectra and the increase of nuclear spin-lattice
relaxation in doped samples, indicate a diverse nature of electron spin
correlations in magnetically and nonmagnetically doped samples, which begin
developing at rather high temperatures with respect to the antiferromagnetic

Finite temperature behavior of strongly disordered quantum magnets coupled to a dissipative bath
We study the effect of dissipation on the infinite randomness fixed point and
the Griffiths-McCoy singularities of random transverse Ising systems in chains,
ladders and in two-dimensions. A strong disorder renormalization group scheme
is presented that allows the computation of the finite temperature behavior of
the magnetic susceptibility and the spin specific heat. In the case of Ohmic
dissipation the susceptibility displays a crossover from Griffiths-McCoy
behavior (with a continuously varying dynamical exponent) to classical Curie
behavior at some temperature . The specific heat displays Griffiths-McCoy
singularities over the whole temperature range. For super-Ohmic dissipation we
find an infinite randomness fixed point within the same universality class as
the transverse Ising system without dissipation. In this case the phase diagram
and the parameter dependence of the dynamical exponent in the Griffiths-McCoy

The Sheffield Wargames Corpus.
Recognition of speech in natural environments is a challenging task, even more so if this involves conversations between sev-eral speakers. Work on meeting recognition has addressed some of the significant challenges, mostly targeting formal, business style meetings where people are mostly in a static position in a room. Only limited data is available that contains high qual-ity near and far field data from real interactions between par-ticipants. In this paper we present a new corpus for research on speech recognition, speaker tracking and diarisation, based on recordings of native speakers of English playing a table-top wargame. The Sheffield Wargames Corpus comprises 7 hours of data from 10 recording sessions, obtained from 96 micro-phones, 3 video cameras and, most importantly, 3D location data provided by a sensor tracking system. The corpus repre-sents a unique resource, that provides for the first time location tracks (1.3Hz) of speakers that are constantly moving and talk-ing. The corpus is available for research purposes, and includes annotated development and evaluation test sets. Baseline results for close-talking and far field sets are included in this paper. 1
Phenomenological model for the remanent magnetization of dilute quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets
We present a phenomenological model for the remanent magnetization at low
temperatures in the quasi-one-dimensional dilute antiferromagnets
CH_{3}NH_{3}Mn_{1-x}Cd_{x} Cl_{3}\cdot 2H_{2}O and
(CH_{3})_{2}NH_{2}Mn_{1-x}Cd_{x}Cl_{3}\cdot 2H_{2}O. The model assumes the
existence of uncompensated magnetic moments induced in the odd-sized segments
generated along the Mn(^{2+}) chains upon dilution. These moments are further
assumed to correlate ferromagnetically after removal of a cooling field. Using
a (mean-field) linear-chain approximation and reasonable set of model
parameters, we are able to reproduce the approximate linear temperature
dependence observed for the remanent magnetization in the real compounds.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; final version to appear in Physical Review
Dynamic roughening and fluctuations of dipolar chains
Nonmagnetic particles in a carrier ferrofluid acquire an effective dipolar
moment when placed in an external magnetic field. This fact leads them to form
chains that will roughen due to Brownian motion when the magnetic field is
decreased. We study this process through experiments, theory and simulations,
three methods that agree on the scaling behavior over 5 orders of magnitude.
The RMS width goes initially as , then as before it
saturates. We show how these results complement existing results on polymer
chains, and how the chain dynamics may be described by a recent non-Markovian

Possible origin of 60-K plateau in the YBa2Cu3O(6+y) phase diagram
We study a model of YBa2Cu3O(6+y) to investigate the influence of oxygen
ordering and doping imbalance on the critical temperature Tc(y) and to
elucidate a possible origin of well-known feature of YBCO phase diagram: the
60-K plateau. Focusing on "phase only" description of the high-temperature
superconducting system in terms of collective variables we utilize a
three-dimensional semi microscopic XY model with two-component vectors that
involve phase variables and adjustable parameters representing microscopic
phase stiffnesses. The model captures characteristic energy scales present in
YBCO and allows for strong anisotropy within basal planes to simulate oxygen
ordering. Applying spherical closure relation we have solved the phase XY model
with the help of transfer matrix method and calculated Tc for chosen system
parameters. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of oxygen ordering and
doping imbalance on the shape of YBCO phase diagram. We find it unlikely that
oxygen ordering alone can be responsible for the existence of 60-K plateau.
Relying on experimental data unveiling that oxygen doping of YBCO may introduce
significant charge imbalance between CuO2 planes and other sites, we show that
simultaneously the former are underdoped, while the latter -- strongly
overdoped almost in the whole region of oxygen doping in which YBCO is
superconducting. As a result, while oxygen content is increased, this provides
two counter acting factors, which possibly lead to rise of 60K plateau.
Additionally, our result can provide an important contribution to understanding
of experimental data supporting existence of multicomponent superconductivity

Generators for the hyperelliptic Torelli group and the kernel of the Burau representation at t = -1
We prove that the hyperelliptic Torelli group is generated by Dehn twists about
separating curves that are preserved by the hyperelliptic involution. This verifies a
conjecture of Hain. The hyperelliptic Torelli group can be identified with the kernel
of the Burau representation evaluated at t = −1 and also the fundamental group of
the branch locus of the period mapping, and so we obtain analogous generating sets
for those. One application is that each component in Torelli space of the locus of
hyperelliptic curves becomes simply connected when curves of compact type are added
Symplectic Lefschetz fibrations with arbitrary fundamental groups
In this paper we give an explicit construction of a symplectic Lefschetz
fibration whose total space is a smooth compact four dimensional manifold with
a prescribed fundamental group. We also study the numerical properties of the
sections in symplectic Lefschetz fibrations and their relation to the structure
