POKRETAČKI MOTIVI PODUZETNIŠTVA U TRANZICIJSKOM GOSPODARSTVU – SLUČAJ POLJSKE
Th e formation and growth of new firms is a complex process and many factors related to this procedure can only be recognised by comprehensive investigation at the microlevel of the firm and the firm founder. Start-up motives are considered of high importance in this process. Th ere is a lack of literature exploring self-employment motivations in countries moving from a planned to a market economy, so-called transition economies. In order to fill this gap, the aim of this paper is to investigate the main start-up motives of Polish microentrepreneurs. According to the study results, the most important start-up motives among Polish microentrepreneurs are: desire for independence, unemployment or redundancy risk, and financial incentive. The paper concludes with implications for the public policy and further research issues.
Evolution of managerial problems from the perspective of management science
Managerial problems and the process of their solving play an important role both in the theory of management science and practice of organisations' functioning. There is a gap in the literature related to the evolution of management problems in the context of the methodological approaches to solve them. The main goal of this paper was to analyse the evolution of the managerial problems from the perspective of management science and to present dominant methodological approaches for problem solving. Based on the extensive literature analysis in the discipline of management science, the evolution of the managerial problems was described with relation to the sixteen streams of management science. The author reviewed the selected classifications of the management theory as well as proposed his own perspective, which took into account managerial problems and their evolution over time. Moreover, there was presented an attempt to depict sources of management problems from the historical perspective within the methodological approaches of management science. Despite the broad view on management problems presented in this paper, such perspective gives a good ground for developing new more specific problem classifications, addressing different facets of managerial problems

Assessment of the Development of the Circular Economy in the EU Countries: Comparative Analysis by Multiple Criteria Methods
In recent decades, attention to environmental resource management has increased worldwide. Circular economy (CE) is a concept that is increasingly being considered as a solution to this range of challenges. Therefore, it is important to monitor the development of CE. This research is an attempt to contribute to the CE surveillance literature by providing a framework for comparing the positions of states and their classifications. The main goal of the article is to assess the level of circular economy development in EU countries according to the chosen methodology. The indicators used in this study are sourced from the European Commission Monitoring Framework database, which includes data from 27 European Union (EU) countries over the time frame from 2016 to 2020. The analysis was carried out using Multi-Criteria Decision Methods (MCDM), such as Simple Additive Weighing (SAW), and the objective method of estimating weights in accordance with proportional differences (APROD), which helped to assess the state of CE. The results showed that EU countries can be divided into three groups based on the level of performance of the CE, and their level of development in relation to the circular economy is different. The level of circular economy development in most EU countries is low. Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Italy demonstrated the best positions. The study findings were derived from the combination of two MCDMs, thus increasing the refinement of the overall methodology. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-02-013 Full Text: PD
A comprehensive review of research approaches in the energy sector : a Management Sciences Perspective
The energy sector plays a crucial role in addressing the global challenges of achieving
sustainability by using renewable energy sources as well as by increasing energy efficiency and
conservation while gaining energy security and safety. Choosing an appropriate research method to
investigate the energy sector’s management has become more complex, involving multiple factors
such as technical, environmental, social, political and economic. Additionally, considering the
important role of energy in modern society, it is imperative to study the current methods used in
examining the energy sector and to create an appropriate theory of the managing energy sector
enterprises in the future. The main purpose of this review paper is to explore which research
methods and approaches are utilized by researchers studying the issues of the managing energy
sector enterprises. This article presents a systematic review based on a qualitative synthesis of the
accessible publications from the Scopus database. In this review, which also adhered to strict search
and filter criteria, a total of 77 articles were selected and synthesized. The selected papers met
the inclusion criteria and a bibliometric visualization approach was applied using MAXQDA2020
software. The present paper reveals existing research trends in utilizing various research approaches
in the energy sector from the perspective of management sciences in the last ten years and also
provides future research avenues in the discussed area of knowledge
Determinants of self-employment among Polish and Romanian immigrants in Germany
This empirical study investigates the determinants of self-employment propensity of Polish and Romanian immigrants in Germany. The German economy is an important object of analysis, as it is the most important destination for international migrants in the European Union. In the paper, we use the recently collected M sample of the German Socio-Economic Panel to examine which personal, country of birth-specific socio-economic and cultural factors influence the self-employment propensity of immigrants. The results of binominal logit regression show that the Central European migrants exhibit different self-employment propensity than migrants from former Yugoslavia, Russian and Kazakhstan, Turkey and Italy, with the self-employment aversion especially strong among Romanians. These differences remain substantial even after controlling for social and human capital endowment of the individuals. This study offers important policy recommendations, showing the potential obstacles in encouraging entrepreneurial activity of immigrants. This topic is becoming increasingly important with the current migration crisis in the EU, caused by intensive inflow of asylum-seeking foreigners in 2015

Editorial: Modern Challenges for Business and Economy in CEE Countries
In recent years the phenomenon of globalisation has become an important issue, widely discussed in the academic literature. Debates explore globalisation intensity and its consequences for economies and businesses around the world. According to A.V. Rutkauskas (2013, p. 388), the processes of globalisation “inevitably determine the integration of countries and regions, which empowers a more economic use of natural resources, more efficient creation of new resources and the increase in the effectiveness of human resource and technology utilization”. Nevertheless, in the short-range perspective, the uncontrolled processes of globalisation reveal various problems, solution of which requires extra expenditures. Thus, looking at the process of globalisation, it is possible to notice growing number of challenges that need to be coped with by governments, businesses and societies in various parts of the world (Mascarenhas, 2009). The region of Central and Eastern
Europe (CEE) is not an exception from the rule. Moreover, due to different facets of globalisation and regionalisation, some challenges are similar to those in other parts of the world, although the region has its own specific problems to solve and consider on the way to success (Klich, 2013; Renko & Knezevic, 2013). Consequently, this issue of EBER concentrates on the modern challenges for organisations and countries’ economies in the region of the CEE, particularly four countries: Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Slovakia
