    Toward a climate downscaling for the Eastern Mediterranean at high-resolution

    International audienceAs a first step toward downscaling global model simulations of future climates for the eastern Mediterranean Sea and surrounding land area, mesoscale-model simulations with the Pennsylvania State University ? National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) mesoscale model, version 5 (MM5) are verified in the context of precipitation amount. The simulations are driven with January NCAR-NCEP reanalysis project (NNRP) lateral-boundary conditions and assimilate surface and upper air observations. The results of the simulations compare reasonably well with rain gauge and satellite estimates of monthly total precipitation, and the model reproduces the overall trends in inter-annual precipitation variability for one test region. Arch., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2019Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 146-151).In this thesis, a building is designed on a New York City-owned vacant lot in Harlem to serve homeless LGBTQ youth. The City of New York maintains the condition of vacancy scattered throughout the five boroughs where, The Department of Housing Preservation and Development owns over 1,300 empty lots. While these spaces may be viewed as real estate opportunities, approximately a quarter of them are undesirable for development due to their small, Old Law size (25' x 112'). Further, an examination of the history of these lots should resist a reductive response to simply build market-rate housing. The vacancies are the result of strategic disinvestment through redlining practices. Historically, this has disproportionately impacted low-wealth communities of color. Today, these urban voids maintain the memory of displacement and destruction among these communities. Undesirable to their families, thousands of LGBTQ youth find themselves living on the streets. While seven percent of youth identify as LGBTQ in New York City, this minority community makes up over forty percent of the homeless youth population. One response to this crisis by the queer community-specifically within house-ball subculture-is the creation of "houses" where chosen families are formed. In these social structures, "mothers" and "fathers" serve as guardians for their "children," taking care of them through the myriad challenges faced by youth who identify along the gender and sexuality spectra. This organization is paired with contemporary practices in youth homeless shelters to rethink supportive services and housing for homeless youth.     Motivated strategies in the performance appraisal process: Effects of rater accountability

    Recent performance appraisal research has focused on rater cognitive processes. Instead, this research examined the effects of a motivational variable, accountability, on rater cognitive processes and on performance ratings. In the first experiment, accountability attenuated a primacy effect in evaluative ratings, and, when negative information was presented first, increased the time spent looking at performance information. However, there was no evidence that looking time mediated the effect of accountability on evaluative ratings. In the second experiment, accountable subjects had a more conservative response bias in behavioral ratings relative to unaccountable subjects if evaluative ratings were made prior to behavioral ratings. Accountable subjects who made behavioral ratings first showed no response bias in behavioral ratings although they had less confidence in their ratings relative to other subjects. This research demonstrates that accountability can influence rater cognitive processes and thus performance ratings but that its effects are situational

    Concurrency in Biological Modeling: Behavior, Execution and Visualization

    Modeling natural systems is a complicated task that involves the concurrent behavior of various processes, mechanisms and objects. Here, we describe an approach that we have been taking in our group for several years, whereby the complexity of the problem is reduced by decomposing a natural system into its basic elements, which are then reassembled and combined to form a comprehensive, simulatable model of the system. Our modeling approach allows one to view a natural system at various levels of abstraction, in a way that makes it possible to zoom in and out between levels. Using statecharts, a high level visual formalism, we specify the behavior of the basic elements of each level and compile these into executable code, which is then linked to an animated front-end. At run-time, the concurrent execution of the basic elements is continuously displayed and provides a dynamic description of the system. We illustrate this approach by modeling aspects of three biological systems: development of the mammalian pancreas; the differentiation of T cells in the thymus; and the dynamic architecture of a lymph node. We compared each model’s behavior with experimental data and also reproduced genetic experiments in silico. Interestingly, certain behavioral properties that were not explicitly programmed into the model emerge from concurrent execution and correspond well with the experimental observations
