Kinematic and dynamic analysis of a spatial one-DOF foldable tensegrity mechanism
This paper presents a mechanical analysis of a spatial 1-DOF tensegrity mechanism created by connecting three planar tensegrity mechanisms to form a triangular prism. The subsequent investigation produced kinematic and dynamic models that allow the workspace-boundary singularities and minimum energy configuration to be determined. Singularities were found to occur when the mechanism is folded in the vertical X, Y plane or in the horizontal X, Z plane. The minimum energy configuration, formed by the angle between the horizontal plane and the actuated strut, was found to be θ= π/4. However, when the system was linearized to determine the analytic solution for the dynamics, the minimum energy configuration become θ = 1 due to the inherent error produced by the system linearization. The dynamic response of the mechanism to an initial small displacement was determined for each case of critically damped, overdamped, and underdamped systems
Optimization and regeneration kinetics of lymphatic-specific photodynamic therapy in the mouse dermis.
Lymphatic vessels transport fluid, antigens, and immune cells to the lymph nodes to orchestrate adaptive immunity and maintain peripheral tolerance. Lymphangiogenesis has been associated with inflammation, cancer metastasis, autoimmunity, tolerance and transplant rejection, and thus, targeted lymphatic ablation is a potential therapeutic strategy for treating or preventing such events. Here we define conditions that lead to specific and local closure of the lymphatic vasculature using photodynamic therapy (PDT). Lymphatic-specific PDT was performed by irradiation of the photosensitizer verteporfin that effectively accumulates within collecting lymphatic vessels after local intradermal injection. We found that anti-lymphatic PDT induced necrosis of endothelial cells and pericytes, which preceded the functional occlusion of lymphatic collectors. This was specific to lymphatic vessels at low verteporfin dose, while higher doses also affected local blood vessels. In contrast, light dose (fluence) did not affect blood vessel perfusion, but did affect regeneration time of occluded lymphatic vessels. Lymphatic vessels eventually regenerated by recanalization of blocked collectors, with a characteristic hyperplasia of peri-lymphatic smooth muscle cells. The restoration of lymphatic function occurred with minimal remodeling of non-lymphatic tissue. Thus, anti-lymphatic PDT allows control of lymphatic ablation and regeneration by alteration of light fluence and photosensitizer dose
Modeling the Radio and X-ray Emission of SN 1993J and SN 2002ap
Modeling of radio and X-ray observations of supernovae interacting with their
circumstellar media are discussed, with special application to SN 1993J and SN
2002ap. We emphasize the importance of including all relevant physical
mechanisms, especially for the modeling of the radio light curves. The
different conclusions for the absorption mechanism (free-free or synchrotron
self-absorption), as well as departures from an CSM, as
inferred by some authors, are discussed in detail. We conclude that the
evidence for a variation in the mass loss rate with time is very weak. The
results regarding the efficiencies of magnetic field generation and
relativistic particle acceleration are summarized.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Uses svmult.cls. To appear in proceedings of IAU

Reconstructing Neutrino Properties from Collider Experiments in a Higgs Triplet Neutrino Mass Model
We extend the minimal supersymmetric standard model with bilinear R-parity
violation to include a pair of Higgs triplet superfields. The neutral
components of the Higgs triplets develop small vacuum expectation values (VEVs)
quadratic in the bilinear R-parity breaking parameters. In this scheme the
atmospheric neutrino mass scale arises from bilinear R-parity breaking while
for reasonable values of parameters the solar neutrino mass scale is generated
from the small Higgs triplet VEVs. We calculate neutrino masses and mixing
angles in this model and show how the model can be tested at future colliders.
The branching ratios of the doubly charged triplet decays are related to the
solar neutrino angle via a simple formula.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures; one formula corrected, two author's names

Experimental Drainage Device to Reduce Lymphoedema in a Rat Model.
Despite recent advances in pharmacological research and microsurgery, lymphoedema remains an incurable disease that deeply affects quality of life. There is an urgent need for innovative approaches to restore continuous lymph flow in affected tissues. To this end, the efficacy of a subcutaneously implanted draining device in reducing lymphoedema volume in a rat hindlimb lymphoedema model was tested.
A rat model of chronic lymphoedema was developed by surgical removal of popliteal and inguinal lymph nodes, followed by irradiation. The model was characterised by monitoring limb volume via tape measure, skin water content via dielectric constant measurement, and lymphatic drainage via lymphofluoroscopy. After lymphoedema establishment in 16 Wistar rats, a device made of fenestrated tubing equipped with a miniaturised pumping system, was implanted subcutaneously in the affected limb to restore continuous recirculation of interstitial fluid.
Lymphofluoroscopy imaging showed impaired lymphatic drainage following lymphadenectomy and irradiation. Affected limb volume and skin water content increased significantly compared with the untreated limb, with a median (interquartile range) of 3.85 (0.38) cm 3 versus 3.03 (0.43) cm 3 for volume (n = 16, p = .001) and 26.6 (9.1) versus 16.6 (3.7) cm 3 for skin dielectric constant (n = 16, p = .001). Treatment of lymphoedema with the implanted drainage device showed that 5 weeks post-implant excess volume was significantly reduced by 51 ± 18% compared with the pre-implant situation (n = 9 sham group, n = 7 pump group).
Lymphoedema volume in the rat model was significantly reduced by restoring continuous drainage of excess fluid using a novel subcutaneously implanted device, opening the way to the development of an artificial lymphatic vessel
Lymphatic vessel density is associated with CD8+ T cell infiltration and immunosuppressive factors in human melanoma.
Increased density of tumor-associated lymphatic vessels correlates with poor patient survival in melanoma and other cancers, yet lymphatic drainage is essential for initiating an immune response. Here we asked whether and how lymphatic vessel density (LVD) correlates with immune cell infiltration in primary tumors and lymph nodes (LNs) from patients with cutaneous melanoma. Using immunohistochemistry and quantitative image analysis, we found significant positive correlations between LVD and CD8 + T cell infiltration as well as expression of the immunosuppressive molecules inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and 2,3-dioxygénase (IDO). Interestingly, similar associations were seen in tumor-free LNs adjacent to metastatic ones, indicating loco-regional effects of tumors. Our data suggest that lymphatic vessels play multiple roles at tumor sites and LNs, promoting both T cell infiltration and adaptive immunosuppressive mechanisms. Lymph vessel associated T cell infiltration may increase immunotherapy success rates provided that the treatment overcomes adaptive immune resistance
Search for Doubly-Charged Higgs Bosons at LEP
Doubly-charged Higgs bosons are searched for in e^+e^- collision data
collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV.
Final states with four leptons are analysed to tag the pair-production of
doubly charged Higgs bosons. No significant excess is found and lower limits at
95% confidence level on the doubly-charged Higgs boson mass are derived. They
vary from 95.5 GeV to 100.2 GeV, depending on the decay mode. Doubly-charged
Higgs bosons which couple to electrons would modify the cross section and
forward-backward asymmetry of the e^+e^- -> e^+e^- process. The measurements of
these quantities do not deviate from the Standard Model expectations and
doubly-charged Higgs bosons with masses up to the order of a TeV are excluded
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
