    Zintl phases for thermoelectric devices

    By converting waste heat into electricity and improving the efficiency of refrigeration systems, thermoelectric devices could play a significant role in solving today's energy problems. Increasing the thermoelectric efficiency (as measured by the thermoelectric material's figure-of-merit, zT) is critical to the development of this technology. Complex Zintl phases, in particular, make ideal candidates for thermoelectric materials because the necessary electron–crystal, phonon–glass properties can be engineered with an understanding of the Zintl chemistry. A recent example is the discovery that Yb14MnSb11, a transition metal Zintl compound, has twice the zT as the material currently in use at NASA. This perspective outlines a strategy to discover new high zT materials in Zintl phases, and presents results pointing towards the success of this approach

    Individual Differences in Trust in Friendships of Children and Adolescents with Their Best versus Other Friend

    This study was concerned with the investigation of gender and psychological types (Extravert-Introvert, Sensation-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and Judging- Perceiving) in the application of trust of friendships of children and adolescents in reference to their \u27best\u27 and another one friend. The psychological types were determined by the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children (grades 4, 6, and 8) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator form G (grade 10). The two measures of trust were a modified version of Sharabany Intimacy Scale (Sharabany, 1974), which consisted of a questionnaire of descriptive sentences about friendship, and a measure based on the Prisoner’s Dilemma, consisting of four scenarios which described conflict situations involving interpersonal issues regarding trust. The subjects responded to the questions in reference to their \u27best\u27 and an \u27other\u27 friend, who was rank-ordered sixth on their list of friends. The analysis for sex differences showed that males and females gave higher trust ratings for \u27best\u27 friend than for \u27other\u27 friend. Females had higher trust scores than males when \u27best friend and \u27other\u27 friend were involved, but males made a more trusting choice in conflict situations concerning \u27other\u27 friend. Across the four psychological types examined, Extravert-Introvert, Sensation-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and Judging-Perceiving, higher trust ratings and more trusting choices in conflict situations were made for \u27best\u27 friend compared to \u27other\u27 friend. Furthermore, there was a difference in scenario order for all four psychological types for trusting choices in a conflict involving a \u27best\u27 friend. The order from highest to lowest mean was: 3-Secret, 4-Backstab, 1-Principal, and 2-Homework.     High-Temperature Transport Properties of the Zintl Phases Yb_(11)GaSb_9 and Yb_(11)InSb_9

    Two rare-earth Zintl phases, Yb_(11)GaSb_9 and Yb_(11)InSb_9, were synthesized in high-temperature self-fluxes of molten Ga and In, respectively. Structures were characterized by both single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction and are consistent with the published orthorhombic structure, with the space group Iba2. High-temperature differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetry (TG) measurements reveal thermal stability to 1300 K. Seebeck coefficient and resistivity measurements to 1000 K are consistent with the hypothesis that Yb_(11)GaSb_9 and Yb_(11)InSb_9 are small band gap semiconductors or semimetals. Low doping levels lead to bipolar conduction at high temperature, preventing a detailed analysis of the transport properties. Thermal diffusivity measurements yield particularly low lattice thermal conductivity values, less than 0.6 W/m K for both compounds. The low lattice thermal conductivity suggests that Yb_(11)MSb_9 (M = Ga, In) has the potential for high thermoelectric efficiency at high temperature if charge-carrier doping can be controlled

    Synthesis, structure, and high-temperature thermoelectric properties of boron-doped Ba_8Al_(14)Si_(31) clathrate I phases

    Single crystals of boron-doped Ba_8Al_(14)Si_(31) clathrate I phase were prepared using Al flux growth. The structure and elemental composition of the samples were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction; elemental analysis; and multinuclear ^(27)Al, ^(11)B, and ^(29)Si solid-state NMR. The samples' compositions of Ba_8B_(0.17)Al_(14)Si_(31), Ba_8B_(0.19)Al_(15)Si_(31), and Ba_8B_(0.32)Al_(14)Si_(310) were consistent with the framework-deficient clathrate I structure Ba_8Al_xSi_(42-3/4x)â–¡_(4-1/4x) (X = 14, â–¡ = lattice defect). Solid-state NMR provides further evidence for boron doped into the framework structure. Temperature-dependent resistivity indicates metallic behavior, and the negative Seebeck coefficient indicates that transport processes are dominated by electrons. Thermal conductivity is low, but not significantly lower than that observed in the undoped Ba_8Al_(14)Si_(31) prepared in the same manner

    There is considerable variability among individuals in musculoskeletal response to long-duration spaceflight. The specific origin of the individual variability is unknown but is almost certainly influenced by the details of other mission conditions such as individual differences in exercise countermeasures, particularly intensity of exercise, dietary intake, medication use, stress, sleep, psychological profiles, and actual mission task demands. In addition to variations in mission conditions, genetic differences may account for some aspect of individual variability. Generally, this individual variability exceeds the variability between sexes that adds to the complexity of understanding sex differences alone. Research specifically related to sex differences of the musculoskeletal system during unloading is presented and discussed

    Optimization of the Separation of NDA-Derivatized Methylarginines by Capillary and Microchip Electrophoresis

    The methylated arginines (MAs) monomethylarginine (MMA), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) have been shown to be independent predictors of cardiovascular disease. This article describes progress regarding the development of an analytical method capable of rapidly analyzing MAs using capillary electrophoresis (CE) and microchip electrophoresis (MCE) with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection. Several parameters including buffer composition and separation voltage were optimized to achieve an ideal separation. The analytes of interest were derivatized with naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA) to produce fluorescent 1-cyanobenz[f]isoindole (CBI) derivatives and then subjected to CE analysis. Baseline resolution of SDMA, ADMA, MMA, and arginine was achieved in less than 8 min. The limits of detection for SDMA, ADMA, MMA, and arginine were determined to be 15, 20, 25, and 5 nM, respectively, which are well below the expected plasma concentrations. The CE separation method was then transferred to a glass MCE device with LIF detection. MAs were baseline resolved in 3 min on-chip using a 14 cm separation channel with detection limits of approximately 10 nM for each species. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of the separation of MAs by MCE

    Do Incest, Depression, Parental Drinking, Serious Romantic Relationships, and Living with Parents Influence Patterns of Substance Use During Emerging Adulthood?

    This study examined how incest, depression, parental drinking, relationship status, and living with parents affect patterns of substance use among emerging adults, 18 to 25 years old. The study sample included (n = 11,546) individuals who participated in Waves I, II, and III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The study used separate latent class analysis for males and females to determine how patterns of substance use clustered together. The study identified the following three classes of substance use: heavy, moderate, and normative substance use patterns. Multinomial logistic regression indicated that, for females only, incest histories also nearly doubled the risk of heavy-use class membership. In addition, experiencing depression, being single, and not living with parents serve as risk factors for males and females in the heavy-use group. Conversely, being Black, Hispanic, or living with parents lowered the likelihood of being in the group with the most substance use behaviors (i.e., heavy use). Findings highlight the need for interventions that target depression and female survivors of incest among emerging adults

    Spatial contrasts in hepatic and biliary PAHs in Tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps) throughout the Gulf of Mexico, with comparison to the Northwest Atlantic

    A multinational demersal longline survey was conducted on the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf over the years 2015 and 2016 to generate a Gulf-wide baseline of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in demersal fishes. Tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps) were sampled in all regions of the Gulf of Mexico for biometrics, bile, and liver. Tilefish liver was also obtained from surveys in the northwest Atlantic Ocean for comparison. Liver tissues (n ¼ 305) were analyzed for PAHs and select alkylated homologs using QuEChERS extractions and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Bile samples (n ¼ 225) were analyzed for biliary PAH metabolites using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Spatial comparisons indicate the highest levels of PAH exposure and hepatic accumulation in the north central Gulf of Mexico, with decreasing concentrations moving from the north central Gulf counterclockwise, and an increase on the Yucatan Shelf. Hepatic PAH concentrations were similar between the Gulf of Mexico and the northwest Atlantic, however, Tilefish from the northwest Atlantic had higher concentrations and more frequent detection of carcinogenic high molecular weight PAHs. Overall, results demonstrate that PAH pollution was ubiquitous within the study regions, with recent exposure and hepatic accumulation observed in Tilefish from both the Gulf of Mexico and northwest Atlantic

    Typologies of substance use and illegal behaviors: A comparison of emerging adults with histories of foster care and the general population

    This study used latent class analysis (LCA) to explore whether patterns of substance use and illegal behaviors among emerging adults, 18 to 28 years old, differ depending on whether they have a prior history in foster care. The study sample, consisting of 316 respondents who had previously been in foster care and 14,301 respondents without a foster care history, was drawn from the third wave of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. A multiple-group LCA compared former foster youth to their peers in the general population. The following four classes were identified: illegal behaviors, substance use, illegal behaviors with problematic substance use and normative behaviors. Most of the differences between the groups were not statistically significant. However, within the illegal behavior class former foster youth were less likely to have bought, sold, or held stolen goods; injured someone in a fight so that she or he needed medical attention; to have sold drugs; and to have been drunk at school or work. Additionally, in the illegal behaviors with problematic substance use class emerging adults in the general population were more likely to have used cocaine. Within the normative behaviors class, former foster youth were more likely to be current smokers, and to have injured someone in a fight so that he or she required medical attention. Within the substance use class, emerging adults from the general population were more likely to have taken place in a fight where one group fought another. Additional statistically significant, but very small differences were also identified

    z~2: An Epoch of Disk Assembly

    We explore the evolution of the internal gas kinematics of star-forming galaxies from the peak of cosmic star-formation at z∼2z\sim2 to today. Measurements of galaxy rotation velocity VrotV_{rot}, which quantify ordered motions, and gas velocity dispersion σg\sigma_g, which quantify disordered motions, are adopted from the DEEP2 and SIGMA surveys. This sample covers a continuous baseline in redshift from z=2.5z=2.5 to z=0.1z=0.1, spanning 10 Gyrs. At low redshift, nearly all sufficiently massive star-forming galaxies are rotationally supported (Vrot>σgV_{rot}>\sigma_g). By z=2z=2, the percentage of galaxies with rotational support has declined to 50%\% at low stellar mass (109−1010 M⊙10^{9}-10^{10}\,M_{\odot}) and 70%\% at high stellar mass (1010−1011M⊙10^{10}-10^{11}M_{\odot}). For Vrot > 3 σgV_{rot}\,>\,3\,\sigma_g, the percentage drops below 35%\% for all masses. From z = 2z\,=\,2 to now, galaxies exhibit remarkably smooth kinematic evolution on average. All galaxies tend towards rotational support with time, and it is reached earlier in higher mass systems. This is mostly due to an average decline in σg\sigma_g by a factor of 3 since a redshift of 2, which is independent of mass. Over the same time period, VrotV_{rot} increases by a factor of 1.5 for low mass systems, but does not evolve for high mass systems. These trends in VrotV_{rot} and σg\sigma_g with time are at a fixed stellar mass and should not be interpreted as evolutionary tracks for galaxy populations. When galaxy populations are linked in time with abundance matching, not only does σg\sigma_g decline with time as before, but VrotV_{rot} strongly increases with time for all galaxy masses. This enhances the evolution in Vrot/σgV_{rot}/\sigma_g. These results indicate that z = 2z\,=\,2 is a period of disk assembly, during which the strong rotational support present in today's massive disk galaxies is only just beginning to emerge.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Ap
