    Vortex description of the fractionalized phase in exciton bose condensate

    As a sequel to the previous work [Phys. Rev. B 72, 235104 (2005)] we present a vortex description of the fractionalized phase in exciton bose condensate. Magnetic flux line and monopole of the 3+1D emergent U(1) gauge theory are identified in the exciton picture. A bundle of vortex/anti-vortex pairs of all flavors of excitons corresponds to the magnetic flux line and a point at which the vortices and anti-vortices recombine is identified as magnetic monopole.     A Supersymmetric U(1)' Model with Multiple Dark Matters

    We consider a scenario where a supersymmetric model has multiple dark matter particles. Adding a U(1)' gauge symmetry is a well-motivated extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). It can cure the problems of the MSSM such as the mu-problem or the proton decay problem with high-dimensional lepton number and baryon number violating operators which R-parity allows. An extra parity (U-parity) may arise as a residual discrete symmetry after U(1)' gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. The Lightest U-parity Particle (LUP) is stable under the new parity becoming a new dark matter candidate. Up to three massive particles can be stable in the presence of the R-parity and the U-parity. We numerically illustrate that multiple stable particles in our model can satisfy both constraints from the relic density and the direct detection, thus providing a specific scenario where a supersymmetric model has well-motivated multiple dark matters consistent with experimental constraints. The scenario provides new possibilities in the present and upcoming dark matter searches in the direct detection and collider experiments.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

    A Non-Fermi Liquid from a Charged Black Hole; A Critical Fermi Ball

    Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate a fermionic spectral function in a 2+1 dimensional non-relativistic quantum field theory which is dual to a gravitational theory in the AdS4AdS_4 background with a charged black hole. The spectral function shows no quasiparticle peak but the Fermi surface is still well defined. Interestingly, all momentum points inside the Fermi surface are critical and the gapless modes are defined in a {\it critical Fermi ball} in the momentum space.Comment: v3) discussion on the singular nature of the zero energy peak added; to appear in Phys.     Substructure of high-p_T Jets at the LHC

    We study high-pt jets from QCD and from highly-boosted massive particles such as tops, W, Z and Higgs, and argue that infrared-safe observables can help reduce QCD backgrounds. Jets from QCD are characterized by different patterns of energy flow compared to the products of highly-boosted heavy particle decays, and we employ a variety of jet shapes, observables restricted to energy flow within a jet, to explore this difference. Results from Monte Carlo generators and arguments based on perturbation theory support the discriminating power of the shapes we refer to as planar flow and angularities. We emphasize that for massive jets, these and other observables can be analyzed perturbatively.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figure

    {BOAO Photometric Survey of Galactic Open Clusters. II. Physical Parameters of 12 Open Clusters

    We have initiated a long-term project, the BOAO photometric survey of open clusters, to enlarge our understanding of galactic structure using UBVI CCD photometry of open clusters which have been little studied before. This is the second paper of the project in which we present the photometry of 12 open clusters. We have determined the cluster parameters by fitting the Padova isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. All the clusters except for Be 0 and NGC 1348 are found to be intermediate-age to old (0.2 - 4.0 Gyrs) open clusters with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.0.Comment: 11 page

    Localized tachyon condensation and G-parity conservation

    We study the condensation of localized tachyon in non-supersymmetric orbifold {\C^2/\Z_n}. We first show that the G-parities of chiral primaries are preserved under the condensation of localized tachyon(CLT) given by the chiral primaries. Using this, we finalize the proof of the conjecture that the lowest-tachyon-mass-squared increases under CLT at the level of type II string with full consideration of GSO projection. We also show the equivalence between the GG-parity given by G=[jk1/n]+[jk2/n]G=[jk_1/n]+ [jk_2/n] coming from partition function and that given by G={jk1/n}k2−{jk2/n}k1G=\{jk_1/n\}k_2 -\{jk_2/n\}k_1 coming from the monomial construction for the chiral primaires in the dual mirror picture.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, final form to appear in JHE
