Environmental and Social Sustainability of Urban And Periurban Agriculture (UPA) In Selected Towns Of Ethiopia
Today nearly a billion of world population makes their daily bread from UPA, the sector that has received only little attention. This paper tries to assess the sustainability of urban agriculture from social and environmental point of view. The paper used a combination of primary and secondary data. The primary data is collected through questionnaires and structured interview specially designed for this study. About 280 households are selected using proportionate-stratified sampling techniques, the stratification being the size of urban farmers in each of the town. The study shows that the environmental and health aspect of sustainability is closer to the yellow line mainly due to extensive use of chemical inputs. From social and political point of view, UPA is inclined to be unsustainable. Thus, city municipalities and national policy makers have provide the necessary support and grant legal recognition that matches the contribution of UPA to the national economic development. Key words: sustainability, urban and peri-urban, agriculture, Ethiopi
A Clinical Study on Glucosamine Sulfate versus Combination of Glucosamine Sulfate and NSAIDs in Mild to Moderate Knee Osteoarthritis
Background. Glucosamine may be effective in treating and possibly slowing the progression of Osteoarthritis (OA). It is believed Glucosamine supplements may help to stop cartilage breakdown, build cartilage and decrease swelling. Objective. The objective of this study was glucosamine sulfate versus combination of glucosamine sulfate and Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) in mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. Methods. Subjects were randomly recruited from Rheumatology outpatient department after a diagnosis of mild or moderate Osteoarthritis. Study tools like patient data collection form, Western Ontario McMaster Universities Arthritis index (WOMAC) of Osteoarthritis questionnaires and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were used. Results. After 12 weeks, WOMAC total score the result showed that the significant mean difference between the group A and Group B treatment (P < 0.01), with a combination of GS and NSAIDs reducing VAS pain scores. Thus, it is found that Group B treatments over 4 and 12 weeks produced improved WOMAC and VAS grades. Conclusions. Study results may suggest that the Glucosamine Sulfate has a carryover effect like Disease modifying agents. Long-term treatment of Glucosamine Sulfate may reduce the dependence of NSAIDs usage and delay the disease progression. Thereby we can reduce the NSAIDs side effects and improve the patient's quality of life
Residents’ accessibility to public transportation services in Kota Kinabalu City, Sabah
Accessibility is the convenience of getting to a destination that uses multiple modes of transportation. One example of such mode is the public transportation. However, the public transportation is often associated with inefficiencies such as incomplete service routes. This study identifies factors that influence the accessibility of public transportation (public buses) services in Kota Kinabalu city. The study used primary data through direct observation of public buses services on several major routes to the city center. Several interview sessions were held with government agencies and bus operators and a set of survey forms were distributed to 274 respondents through the purposive sampling method. This study uses descriptive analysis such as frequency, percentage and mean values using the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results show that there are several main roads to the city center, where there is no public buses service. The three factors contributing to the buses route services are the bus operators, the demand from resident’s factors and the Local Authority factors. The average mean score indicates that the bus operator factor is the highest factor for overall route services (average mean = 3.01) followed by resident’s factor (average mean = 2.90) and Local Authority factor (average mean = 2.83). These findings help the Local Authorities and some relevant agencies to design and planning a more comprehensive public buses service policy for residents in Kota Kinabalu city
