From Health Anxiety to Health Information Seeking and Utilization: Exploring the Underlying Mechanisms and Boundary Conditions

Individuals with health anxiety often relieve their health concerns by online health information seeking and utilization, which may instead result in excessive and irrational information behaviors. Therefore, it is crucial to explore how online health information behaviors are triggered by health anxiety. From the perspective of information need, this study investigates the transition mechanisms from health anxiety to online health information seeking and utilization. We collected data by an online survey to examine our model. The results show that health anxiety has a positive effect on the fear of missing (FoMO), which can further influence the information need, and ultimately motivate information seeking and utilization. Moreover, tolerance for uncertainty can weaken the causal chain from health anxiety, to FoMO, and then to information need, and finally to information seeking and utilization. This study advances understanding on the complex mechanisms driving health anxious individuals’ information behaviors and offers some practical implications

Occupational dualism and intergenerational educational mobility in the rural economy: evidence from China and India

This paper extends the Becker-Tomes model of intergenerational educational mobility to a rural economy characterized by farm-nonfarm occupational dualism and provides a comparative analysis of rural China and rural India. The model builds a micro-foundation for the widely used linear-in-levels estimating equation. Returns to education for parents and productivity of financial investment in children’s education determine relative mobility, as measured by the slope, while the intercept depends, among other factors, on the degree of persistence in nonfarm occupations. Unlike many existing studies based on coresident samples, our estimates of intergenerational mobility do not suffer from truncation bias. The sons in rural India faced lower educational mobility compared with the sons in rural China in the 1970s to 1990s. To understand the role of genetic inheritance, Altonji et al. (2005) biprobit sensitivity analysis is combined with the evidence on intergenerational correlation in cognitive ability in economics and behavioral genetics literature. The observed persistence can be due solely to genetic correlations in China, but not in India. Father’s nonfarm occupation was complementary to his education in determining a sons’ schooling in India, but separable in China. There is evidence of emerging complementarity for the younger cohorts in rural China. Structural change in favor of the nonfarm sector contributed to educational inequality in rural India. Evidence from supplementary data on economic mechanisms suggests that the model provides plausible explanations for the contrasting roles of occupational dualism in intergenerational educational mobility in rural India and rural China

Preparation of 3D spherical Ni/Al LDHs with significantly enhanced electrochemical performance as a superior cathode material for Ni/MH batteries.

Nickel-based hydroxides with excellent electrochemical performance have been considered as cathode materials for Ni/MH batteries. In this paper, a Ni/Al layered double hydroxides (Ni/Al LDHs) material with three-dimensional (3D) spherical structure is synthesized by a facile stable dual complexation-precipitation method. SEM images show that the obtained Ni/Al LDHs possess 3D spherical structure composed of nanosheets. XRD and CV tests indicate that doping of Al increases the distance between Ni-Al layers, greatly improving the specific capacity of the obtained materials. The electrochemical tests show that the specific capacity of the obtained material with 18% Al is up to 383.4 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. In addition, when the current density is further increased to 10 and 20 A g-1, the specific capacity of this material still maintains 345.0 mAh g-1 and 307.9 mAh g-1, respectively, which implies that this cathode material can provide remarkable power densities. Moreover, the material composed of Ni/Al LDHs keeps 97.6% initial capacity after 5000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g-1, showing an excellent cycling stability and durability

Intergenerational Educational Mobility in Rural Economy: Evidence from China and India

We extend the Becker-Tomes (1986) model of intergenerational educational mobility to a rural economy characterized by occupational dualism (farm vs. nonfarm) and provide a comparative analysis of rural India and rural China. Using two exceptional data-sets, we estimate father-sons intergenerational educational persistence in farm and nonfarm households free of truncation bias due to coresidency. The sons in rural India faced lower educational mobility compared to the sons in rural China in the 1990s and earlier. Father’s nonfarm occupation and education were complementary in determining a son’s schooling in India, but separable in China. However, the separability observed for the older cohorts in rural China broke down for the younger cohort. Evidence from supplementary data on economic mechanisms shows that the extended Becker-Tomes model provides plausible explanations for both the cross-country heterogeneity (India vs. China), and the evolution of mobility across cohorts in China
