Contemplating Convivencia: Cosmopolitanism, Exclusivism and Religious Identity in Iberia

    Get PDF
Visigothic Hispania, Islamicate al-Andalus and Christian Spain are names representing three scriptural monotheistic civilizations in Iberia. Al-Andalus has stood apart from this list by representing a time and a place of convivencia in which Christians, Jews and Muslims cooperated and coexisted. Why and how the Islamicate civilization in al-Andalus differed from the Visigoths or the Spanish, despite all three sharing a religious orientation is an historical puzzle. By exploring the legal status of Jews within the legal regimes of Christian Rome and Visigothic Hispania, this thesis will suggest that it is cosmopolitanism and its converse exclusivism that best explain concepts of convivencia or coexistence in the face of religious diversity

    CADASIL with Cysteine-Sparing Notch-3 Mutation

    Get PDF
Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an inherited vascular dementia1,2. The mutations implicated in CADASIL are located on Chromosome 19 within the NOTCH3 gene, which encodes a transmembrane receptor that is primarily expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells. Over one hundred distinct mutations have been described which alter the number of cysteine residues in the extracellular region and result in a CADASIL phenotype. Cysteine-sparing mutations with CADASIL phenotype have been reported four times. Two German kindreds were recently described with a CADASIL-like phenotype associated with a cysteine-sparing NOTCH3 mutation. We present another such case in a third family, with the same point mutation described in the German families. The patient is a 55-year-old Caucasian woman with five years of progressive cognitive impairment, chronic headaches, and gait instability. Prior to presenting at our clinic, she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer disease. Her neuropsychological testing (Table One) and MRI studies (Figure One), however, were more consistent with a subcortical vascular dementia. Her genetic CADASIL screen was “negative” although a missense mutation in NOTCH3 was identified. At the time of that test, no cysteine-sparing mutations causing CADASIL had been reported. Workup of other family members is ongoing. Elucidation of this case will provide corroboration of a cysteine-sparing CADASIL mutation, and will inform the discussion of whether this represents a distinct entity or a CADASIL subtype. With the field of neurogenetics rapidly evolving, interpretation of standard genetic tests may need to include literature review to ascertain the correct diagnosis

Investigations Concerning Bentonite Deposits Near Ramsay, Montana

    Get PDF
The purpose of Part I of this report is to determine the origin of the bentonite deposits, also to locate them with reference to section corners in the vicinity and to determine their extent. The field work for this report was done in the fall of 1933 and during the spring of 1934. The roads, geologic contacts, and culture in general were mapped with the use of an open sight alidade and plane table. Distances were determined on the roads by the speedometer on the automobile; the detailed survey in the immediate vicinity of the deposits was done with use of the Brunton compass and pacing. The purpose of Part II in this report is to determine if the bentonite deposits immediately west of Butte, Montana are of commercial importance and also to determine the use to which they are best suited

Simulation and Measurement of Windows with Low Emissivity Coatings Used in Conjunction with Teflon Inner Glazings

Theoretical work has illustrated that highly infrared, transparent plastic films are well suited for use as intermediate glazings when used in conjunction with a low emissivity coating. Prototype glazing systems that incorporate low emissivity coatings and Teflon films were constructed. The thermal resistance of each of these prototypes was measured using the University of Waterloo Natural Convection Apparatus. Simulation of the glazing systems was carried out using a two-band glazing system thermal analysis program called VISION. Comparison between measurement and simulation showed good agreement. It can be concluded that highly infrared transparent intermediate glazings can be useful when high thermal resistance is desired and that the VISION glazing system analysis program is useful not only for parametric and sensitivity investigations but can also be used with confidence to estimate U-values of specific glazing systems.Renewable Energy Branch of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resource
