Attitudes of Undergraduate Social Work Students Toward Interprofessional Health Care Practice and Interprofessional Health Care Education

In 2005, the Centre for Collaborative Health Professional Education at Memorial University in Canada commenced an inquiry into the interprofessional education (IPE) of social work students. In the 2005/2006 academic year, undergraduate social work students were introduced to an IPE program at Memorial University for the first time. This interdisciplinary initiative brought together students from pharmacy, nursing, medicine, and social work to develop and encourage interprofessional educational activities with the purpose of increasing collaborative patient-centered practice competencies of students and professionals (Sharpe & Curran, 2006). In the subsequent three academic years (2005/2006, 2006/2007, 2007/2008) Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students explored a variety of IPE modules. This paper summarizes the available literature on the topic of IPE and reports on data collected from three cohorts of undergraduate social work students regarding their attitudes toward interdisciplinary team practice. Data collected are in relation to the Health and Wellbeing of Children module, one of the five module topics in which these students participated over the three-year period. It is proposed that by understanding student attitudes as they are evidenced at this early stage of professional development, valuable information will be provided to educators to inform best practices in the teaching and learning of interprofessional practice skills within the discipline of social work. Finally, the authors provide suggested directions for future research

COMMERCE AND TRADE Brokerage Relationships in Real Estate Transactions: Provide Codification of the Relationships Between Real Estate Brokers and Consumers of Brokerage Services

The Act defines the legal relationship between a real estate broker and other parties to a real estate transaction, and establishes the duties and responsibilities in those relationships. The Provisions of the Act may serve as a basis for a defense or a private right of action by real estate brokers, sellers, buyers, landlords, and tenants

The Effect of Expert Testimony on Juror Decision Making in Eyewitness Identification Cases

The provision of expert testimony for the defence has been demonstrated to sensitise jurors to the variables that may reduce the reliability of an eyewitness identification (Cutler, Dexter, & Penrod, 1989). However, research examining the variables that reduce identification reliability has revealed conflicting findings (Yuille & Cutshall, 1986). Given this disparity in psychological opinion, a situation may arise where opposing expert testimony for the prosecution and the defence is delivered within the same criminal trial This thesis examined the effect of each form of expert testimony about eyewitness identification issues on the decision of the individual juror. The decision making process was divided into three stages. The first stage was defined as the ability to draw accurate inferences about the credibility of the eyewitness, the accused, and the strength of the case for the prosecution and the defence. The second stage was defined as the ability to critically evaluate information that is presented about the eyewitness identification. The third stage was defined as the ability draw accurate judgements in relation to the reliability of the identification, and the verdict. Participants (N= 104) constituted a sample of eligible jury members within the general population. A trial transcript was delivered whereby the accused was charged with the armed hold-up of a service station. The crucial evidence constituted the positive identification of the accused by\u27 the victim or the crime. Witnessing and identification conditions were described as being conducive to a false identification. The expert witness for the prosecution submitted empirical evidence that portrayed the identification as reliable. The expert witness for the defence delivered equivalent information that portrayed the identification as lacking in reliability. Findings demonstrated that alternative modes or expert testimony failed to influence the type of decision formed by the individual juror. Despite this finding of no difference, all subjects demonstrated an inability to form accurate inferences in relation to the credibility of the accused, and the strength of the case for the prosecution. Furthermore, all subjects failed to demonstrate evidence for the critical evaluation of information presented in relation to witnessing and identification conditions. As a consequence, subjects were unable to form an accurate judgement in relation to the reliability of the identification. It is submitted that the provision of expert testimony for the prosecution, and the provision of expert testimony for the defence, facilitates a juror scepticism effect. It is concluded that where evidence of a scepticism effect exists, the probability of wrongfully acquitting an otherwise guilty individual will substantially increase

The Act consists primarily of technical revisions to existing law, but includes several changes which are of general interest. The amended statute now allows a written facsimile or other copy of a proxy in place of the original, gives chief executive officers (CEOs) the authority to take all actions not requiring board approval and clarifies voting rules for mergers. In addition, the Act changes the provisions relating to publication of notices of intent to file articles of incorporation, clarifies preemptive rights issues, and deletes from the savings provision the section regarding claims against a corporation in dissolution

Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions on Tree Islands in the Everglades, South Florida

    Get PDF
The marked decline in tree island cover across the Everglades over the last century, has been attributed to landscape-scale hydrologic degradation. To preserve and restore Everglades tree islands, a clear understanding of tree island groundwater-surface water interactions is needed, as these interactions strongly influence the chemistry of shallow groundwater and the location and patterns of vegetation in many wetlands. The goal of this work was to define the relationship between groundwater-surface water interactions, plant-water uptake, and the groundwater geochemical condition of tree islands. Groundwater and surface water levels, temperature, and chemistry were monitored on eight constructed and one natural tree island in the Everglades from 2007-2010. Sap flow, diurnal water table fluctuations and stable oxygen isotopes of stem, ground and soil water were used to determine the effect of plant-water uptake on groundwater-surface water interactions. Hydrologic and geochemical modeling was used to further explore the effect of plant-groundwater-surface water interactions on ion concentrations and potential mineral formation. A comparison of groundwater and surface water levels, along with calculated groundwater evapotranspiration rates, revealed that the presence of a water table depression under the islands was concurrent with elevated groundwater uptake by the overlying trees. Groundwater chemistry indicated that the water table depression resulted in the advective movement of regional groundwater into the islands. A chloride budget and oxygen isotopes indicated that the elevated ionic strength of tree island groundwater was a result of transpiration. Geochemical modeling indicated that the elevated ionic strength of the groundwater created conditions conducive to the precipitation of aragonite and calcite, and suggests that trees may alter underlying geologic and hydrologic properties. The interaction of tree island and regional groundwater was mediated by the underlying soil type and aboveground biomass, with greater inputs of regional groundwater found on islands underlain by limestone with high amounts of aboveground biomass. Variations in climate, geologic material and aboveground biomass created complex groundwater-surface water interactions that affected the hydrogeochemical condition of tree islands

Boron isotope fractionation in soils at Shale Hills CZO

    Get PDF
Isotope fractionation of many elements can fingerprint the biogeochemical, weathering and erosion processes that govern the evolution of the Critical Zone (CZ). This study investigates boron isotope fractionation in two soil profiles developed on the same shale bedrock at Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory. The first soil profile, located at the valley floor, is isotopically similar to the bedrock and appears to have lost boron mostly through the loss of fine particles matter (clays) with no isotopic fractionation. The second soil profile, located at the ridge top appears to be more depleted in boron concentration and isotopically fractionated toward lower values, as expected from mineral dissolution followed by adsorption/co-precipitation processes
