Fermented Soybean Powder with Rice Mold in the Absence of Salt Stimulates the Cellular Immune System and Suppresses the Humoral Immune Response in Mice
The immunomodulatory effect of fermented non-salty soybean powder (NSBP) was investigated in C3H/HeN mice. The number of splenic CD11b(+), CD49b(+), and interferon (IFN)-gamma(+)CD4(+) cells increased significantly, while that of interleukin (IL)-4(+)CD4(+) and CD19(+) cells decreased significantly in cultures containing NSBP. Similarly, in the spleen and Peyer's patches of mice fed a diet containing NSBP, the number of IL-12(+)CD11b(+), CD49b(+), and IFN-gamma(+)CD4(+) cells increased noticeably, whereas the number of splenic IL-4(+)CD4(+) and CD19b(+) cells was lower compared to mice fed an NSBP-free diet. Superoxide production by peritoneal macrophages was significantly higher in mice fed an NSBP-containing diet. Both intestinal total IgA and serum total IgG levels declined in mice fed the NSBP-containing diet. Microarray analysis of mRNAs extracted from Peyer's patch cells of mice fed the NSBP-containing diet indicated an increase in the expression of several genes related to cellular immune responses, while the expression of genes related to immunoglobulin production decreased. This paper explores identity as a long-term cultural process in which multiple factors intervene at different levels. It argues that both the hegemony and the decline of Teotihuacan influenced the development of collective identities in the Toluca valley, where the study of identity is of particular importance. An analysis of material culture in general, and archeological pottery in particular, enable us to examine the complex web that shaped identity.<br><br>En este artículo se explora la identidad como un proceso cultural de larga duración en el que intervienen factores culturales en diferentes niveles. Se argumenta que tanto la hegemonía como el declive de Teotihuacan influyeron en el desarrollo de las identidades colectivas en el valle de Toluca. Se considera pertinente que, a través de la cultura material, especialmente de la cerámica arqueológica, se profundice en el complejo entramado hacia la consolidación de la identidad
Quantitative determination, by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, of aromatase mRNA in invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast
BACKGROUND: Estrogen is a mitogenic factor that is implicated in the genesis and progression of breast cancer via its binding to estrogen receptor (ER)-α. Synthesis of estrogen in situ is believed to be catalyzed mainly by aromatase. Previous studies comparing the relative contributions from tumor cells and stromal cells to local estrogen synthesis, as assessed by immunohistochemical analysis, were quite controversial and no consistent relationship was found between the presence of aromatase and any clinicopathologic factor. In addition, previous studies into aromatase gene expression and clinicopathologic factors are limited. METHODS: We assessed the level of expression of aromatase mRNA, using quantitative real-time RT-PCR, in 162 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. Associations between aromatase expression and different clinicopathologic factors were sought. RESULTS: It was found that aromatase mRNA was expressed at significantly higher levels in patients older than 50 years, in those without axillary lymph node involvement, in those with tumor size less than 2 cm, and in ER-α positive tumors. However, no relationship was found between aromatase mRNA expression and any other clinicopathologic factor, including histologic grade and progesterone receptor status. Patients with high levels of expression of aromatase mRNA tended to have a better prognosis than did those patients with low expression. CONCLUSION: These findings imply that ER-α and aromatase may be coexpressed in endocrine responsive patients. They may also indicate that aromatase expression could be a marker of endocrine responsiveness, and it may have prognostic implications for breast cancer progression

Relationship between oral hygiene knowledge, source of oral hygiene knowledge and oral hygiene behavior in Japanese university students: A prospective cohort study
The aim of this prospective cohort study was to examine whether oral hygiene knowledge, and the source of that knowledge, affect oral hygiene behavior in university students in Japan. An oral exam and questionnaire survey developed to evaluate oral hygiene knowledge, the source of that knowledge, and oral hygiene behavior, such as the frequency of tooth brushing and regular dental checkups and the use of dental floss, was conducted on university student volunteers. In total, 310 students with poor tooth brushing behavior (frequency of tooth brushing per day [ 50%) source of oral hygiene knowledge, and that a more frequent use of dental floss was significantly associated with dental clinics being a source of oral hygiene knowledge (OR, 4.11; 95%CI, 1.871-9.029; p < 0.001). In addition, a significant association was seen between dental clinics being a source of oral hygiene knowledge and more frequent regular dental checkups (OR, 13.626; 95%CI, 5.971-31.095; p < 0.001). These findings suggest the existence of a relationship between dental clinics being the most common source of oral hygiene knowledge and improved oral hygiene behavior in Japanese university students
Serum Autotaxin Is a Useful Disease Progression Marker in Patients with Primary Biliary Cholangitis
Autotaxin (ATX) is a secreted enzyme metabolized by liver sinusoidal endothelial cells that has been associated with liver fibrosis. We evaluated serum ATX values in 128 treatment-naive, histologically assessed primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) patients and 80 healthy controls for comparisons of clinical parameters in a case-control study. The median ATX concentrations in controls and PBC patients of Nakanuma's stage I, II, III, and IV were 0.70, 0.80, 0.87, 1.03, and 1.70 mg/L, respectively, which increased significantly with disease stage (r = 0.53, P < 0.0001) as confirmed by Scheuer's classification (r = 0.43, P < 0.0001). ATX correlated with Wisteria floribunda agglutinin-positive Mac-2 binding protein (M2BPGi) (r = 0.51, P < 0.0001) and fibrosis index based on four factors (FIB-4) index (r = 0.51, P < 0.0001). While ALP and M2BPGi levels had decreased significantly (both P < 0.001) by 12 months of ursodeoxycholic acid treatment, ATX had not (0.95 to 0.96 mg/L) (P = 0.07). We observed in a longitudinal study that ATX increased significantly (P < 0.00001) over 18 years in an independent group of 29 patients. Patients succumbing to disease-related death showed a significantly higher ATX increase rate (0.05 mg/L/year) than did survivors (0.02 mg/L/year) (P < 0.01). Here, we investigated the mechanism of granuloma formation using single-cell RNA-Seq in sarcoidosis patients. We observed that the percentages of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2–positive (TREM2-positive) macrophages expressing angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and lysozyme, diagnostic makers of sarcoidosis, were increased in cutaneous sarcoidosis granulomas. Macrophages in the sarcoidosis lesion were hypermetabolic, especially in the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). Expression of the PPP enzymes, such as fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase 1 (FBP1), was elevated in both systemic granuloma lesions and serum of sarcoidosis patients. Granuloma formation was attenuated by the PPP inhibitors in in vitro giant cell and in vivo murine granuloma models. These results suggest that the PPP may be a promising target for developing therapeutics for sarcoidosis
Simple Stratification of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Surveillance after Direct-acting Antiviral Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis C
Reports on surveillance systems useful for determining the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment for hepatitis C have been published. Liver cirrhosis (LC) is a high-risk factor for HCC, but the evaluation frequency necessary for patients with chronic hepatitis (CH) remains unknown. Here, we aimed to identify how frequent CH patients should be evaluated for HCC, with particular emphasis on patients achieving a sustained virological response (SVR) with DAA treatment. Data were collected pre-treatment (Pre) and at the time of SVR for 141 patients with hepatitis C receiving DAA treatment. We defined LC by a platelet (PLT) count ≤10×104/µl, and CH was defined by a PLT count of >10×104/µl. The incidence of HCC in patients with CH after achieving SVR was retrospectively evaluated. In total, 128 patients (CH, n=102; LC, n=26) achieved SVR, and 13 developed HCC after SVR during the follow-up period (mean, 748 days). Although fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, the presence of α-fetoprotein, and prothrombin time were significant risk factors for HCC in patients with CH in the univariate analysis, only the Pre-FIB-4 index was an independent predictive factor for HCC development in the multivariate analysis (p=0.04). An FIB-4 index ≥3 was a significant risk factor for HCC (p=0.005). The cumulative risk for HCC at 1000 days was 2.6% and 24.2% in the FIB-4 index <3 and FIB-4 index ≥3 groups, respectively (p=0.004). Frequent HCC examination is recommended for FIB-4 index ≥3 CH patients who obtain SVR after DAA treatment
