Nonmonotonous Magnetic Field Dependence and Scaling of the Thermal Conductivity for Superconductors with Nodes of the Order Parameter
We show that there is a new mechanism for nonmonotonous behavior of magnetic
field dependence of the electronic thermal conductivity of clean
superconductors with nodes of the order parameter on the Fermi surface. In
particular, for unitary scatterers the nonmonotony of relaxation time takes
place. Contribution from the intervortex space turns out to be essential for
this effect even at low temperatures. Our results are in a qualitative
agreement with recent experimental data for superconducting UPt_3. For
E_{2u}-type of pairing we find approximately the scaling of the thermal
conductivity in clean limit with a single parameter x=T/T_c\sqrt{B_{c2}/B} at
low fields and low temperatures, as well as weak low-temperature dependence of
the anisotropy ratio K_{zz}/K_{yy} in zero field. For E_{1g}-type of pairing
deviations from the scaling are more noticeable and the anisotropy ratio is
essentially temperature dependent.Comment: 37 pages, 8 Postscript figures, REVTE
Superconductivity and magnetism on flux grown single crystals of NiBi3
We present resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements on flux
grown single crystals of NiBi3. We find typical behavior of a type-II
superconductor, with, however, a sizable magnetic signal in the superconducting
phase. There is a hysteretic magnetization characteristic of a ferromagnetic
compound. By following the magnetization as a function of temperature, we find
a drop at temperatures corresponding to the Curie temperature of ferromagnetic
amorphous Ni. Thus, we assign the magnetism in NiBi crystals to amorphous
Ni impurities
Multiband superconductivity in the heavy fermion compound PrOs4Sb12
The thermal conductivity of the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 was
measured down to Tc/40 throughout the vortex state. At lowest temperatures and
for magnetic fields H ~ 0.07Hc2, already 40% of the normal state thermal
conductivity is restored. This behaviour (similar to that observed in MgB2) is
a clear signature of multiband superconductivity in this compound.Comment: 12pages, version #1 20\_06\_200
Transport and the Order Parameter of Superconducting UPt3
We calculate the ultrasonic absorption and the thermal conductivity in the
superconducting state of UPt as functions of temperature and direction of
propagation and polarization. Two leading candidates for the superconducting
order parameter are considered: the and representations. Both
can fit the data except for the ultrasonic absorption in the phase. To do
that, it is necessary to suppose that the system has only a single domain, and
that must be chosen as the most favorable one. However, the theory
requires fine-tuning of parameters to fit the low temperature thermal
conductivity. Thus, transport data favor the theory. Measurements of
the thermal conductivity as a function of pressure at low temperature could
help to further distinguish the two theories.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Evidence for field-induced excitations in low-temperature thermal conductivity of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8
The thermal conductivity ,, of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 was studied as a
function of magnetic field. Above 5 K, after an initial decrease,
presents a kink followed by a plateau, as recently reported by Krishana et al..
By contrast, below 1K, the thermal conductivity was found to \emph{increase}
with increasing field. This behavior is indicative of a finite density of
states and is not compatible with the existence of a field-induced fully gapped
state which was recently proposed to describe the
plateau regime. Our low-temperature results are in agreement with recent works
predicting a field-induced enhancement of thermal conductivity by Doppler shift
of quasi-particle spectrum.Comment: 4 pages including 4 eps figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Probing the superconducting gap symmetry of PrRuSb: A comparison with PrOsSb
We report measurements of the magnetic penetration depth in single
crystals of PrRuSb down to 0.1 K. Both and superfluid
density exhibit an exponential behavior for 0.5, with
parameters (0)/\textit{k}\textit{T} = 1.9 and
= 2900 \AA. The value of (0) is consistent with the specific-heat jump
value of = 1.87 measured elsewhere, while the value of
is consistent with the measured value of the electronic
heat-capacity coefficient . Our data are consistent with
PrRuSb being a moderate-coupling, fully-gapped superconductor. We
suggest experiments to study how the nature of the superconducting state
evolves with increasing Ru substitution for Os
Transport Properties of d-Wave Superconductors in the Vortex State
We calculate the magnetic field dependence of quasiparticle transport
properties in the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor arising solely from
the quasiparticle's Doppler shift in the superflow field surrounding the
vortex. Qualitative features agree well with experiments on cuprate and heavy
fermion superconductors at low fields and temperatures. We derive scaling
relations in the variable valid at sufficiently low temperatures
and fields , but show that these relations depend on the scattering
phase shift, and are in general fulfilled only approximately even in the clean
limit, due to the energy dependence of the quasiparticle relaxation time.Comment: 5 pages, 2 Postscript figure
Field dependence of the vortex core size probed by scanning tunneling microscopy
We study the spatial distribution of the density of states (DOS) at zero bias N(r) in the mixed state of single and multigap superconductors. We provide an analytic expression for N(r) based on deGennes' relationship between DOS and the order parameter that reproduces well scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) data in several superconducting materials. In the single gap superconductor β-Bi2Pd, we find that N(r) is governed by a length scale ξH = √φ0/2πH, which decreases in rising fields. The vortex core size C, defined via the slope of the order parameter at the vortex center, C ∝ (d%/dr|r→0)−1, differs from ξH by a material dependent numerical factor. The new data on the tunneling conductance and vortex lattice of the 2H-NbSe1.8S0.2 show the in-plane isotropic vortices, suggesting that substitutional scattering removes the in-plane anisotropy found in the two-gap superconductor 2H-NbSe2. We fit the tunneling conductance of 2H-NbSe1.8S0.2 to a two gap model and calculate the vortex core size C for each band. We find that C is field independent and has the same value for both bands. We also analyze the two-band superconductor 2H-NbS2 and find the same result. We conclude that, independently of the magnetic field induced variation of the order parameter values in both bands, the spatial variation of the order parameter close to the vortex core is the same for all bands
DC current through a superconducting two-barrier system
We analyze the influence of the structure within a SNS junction on the
multiple Andreev resonances in the subgap I-V characteristics. Coherent
interference processes and incoherent propagation in the normal region are
considered. The detailed geometry of the normal region where the voltage drops
in superconducting contacts can lead to observable effects in the conductance
at low voltages.Comment: 11 pages, including 7 postscript file
Thermal conductivity in B- and C- phase of UPt_3
Although the superconductivity in UPt_3 is one of the most well studied,
there are still lingering questions about the nodal directions in the B and C
phase in the presence of a magnetic field. Limiting ourselves to the low
temperature regime (T<<Delta(0)), we study the magnetothermal conductivity with
in semiclassical approximation using Volovik's approach. The angular dependence
of the magnetothermal conductivity for an arbitrary field direction should
clarify the nodal structure in UPt_3.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
