This paper is a first summary and update on the data of the graves and skeletal remains found in St. Nicholas Citadel (Bari, South Italy) during the excavation work of 1982, 1984 e 1987. In particular, it deals with the anthropological and paleopathological study of human bones, updating methods and comparisons, and provides a preliminary picture of the sample of individuals. Particular attention is focus on the craniometric investigation

Paleobiology, Palaeopathology and Necrophobic Practices in Early Iron Age Burials (IX–VII Century BC) in Capo Colonna, Trani, Apulia, Southern Italy – The State of Health of a Small Sample from Iron Age

In this palaeobiological and palaeopathological study of skeletal remains, we attempt to define the physical characteristics, living conditions and the state of health of a small sample from two early Iron Age (IX–VIII century BC) graves at Capo Colonna, Trani (Bari, Apulia, southern Italy). In the thoraco-lumbar segment (T11-L1) of the vertebral column of an adult male 35 years old, we found wedge-shaped deformation of the anterior part of T12 with kyphosis of the affected tract. Digital radiography and volumetric reconstruction by 3D CT indicated that the alteration did not result from an infectious process (Pott’s disease). Instead, it was a traumatic lesion probably caused by falling from a height. The archaeological investigation revealed extraordinary arrangements of the bodies in the graves: they were buried with a boulder placed on the coffin. This practice has been seen in similar graves in the Balkan area, particularly in Greece, from the Neolithic to the Early Middle Ages. The most likely explanation is a funeral ritual characterized by necrophobia, the purpose of which was to prevent the deceased from returning to terrorize the living

Anthropological and Paleodietary Analysis of Human Remains: A Case Study from the Teutonic Settlement of Torre Alemanna in Puglia (Cerignola, FG, Italy)

The main object of this paper is to reconstruct the presence of the knights of the Teutonic Order in the archeological site of Torre Alemanna (Foggia, Italy), one of the best preserved Teutonic production sites. This is an interdisciplinary study that includes archeological and anthropological research combined with the paleonutritional results and radiocarbon dating. Specifically, for this study, the area 5 of the complex has been investigated. The cemetery is located in the northwest corner of the complex, and the burials are probably dated at the beginning of the Teutonic settlement. In order to draw conclusions about their presence, attention has been focused primarily on ergonomics activities, injuries, morphological and metric characters, diet, and dating

Morphological and Structural Aspects of the Extremely Halophilic Archaeon Haloquadratum walsbyi

Ultrathin square cell Haloquadratum walsbyi from the Archaea domain are the most abundant microorganisms in the hypersaline water of coastal salterns and continental salt lakes. In this work, we explore the cell surface of these microorganisms using amplitude-modulation atomic-force microscopy in nearly physiological conditions. We demonstrate the presence of a regular corrugation with a periodicity of 16–20 nm attributed to the surface layer (S-layer) protein lattice, striped domains asymmetrically distributed on the cell faces and peculiar bulges correlated with the presence of intracellular granules. Besides, subsequent images of cell evolution during the drying process indicate the presence of an external capsule that might correspond to the giant protein halomucin, predicted by the genome but never before observed by other microscopy studies

How do cardiologists select patients for dual antiplatelet therapy continuation beyond 1 year after a myocardial infarction? Insights from the EYESHOT Post-MI Study

    Get PDF
Background: Current guidelines suggest to consider dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) continuation for longer than 12 months in selected patients with myocardial infarction (MI). Hypothesis: We sought to assess the criteria used by cardiologists in daily practice to select patients with a history of MI eligible for DAPT continuation beyond 1 year. Methods: We analyzed data from the EYESHOT Post-MI, a prospective, observational, nationwide study aimed to evaluate the management of patients presenting to cardiologists 1 to 3 years from the last MI event. Results: Out of the 1633 post-MI patients enrolled in the study between March and December 2017, 557 (34.1%) were on DAPT at the time of enrolment, and 450 (27.6%) were prescribed DAPT after cardiologist assessment. At multivariate analyses, a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with multiple stents and the presence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) resulted as independent predictors of DAPT continuation, while atrial fibrillation was the only independent predictor of DAPT interruption for patients both at the second and the third year from MI at enrolment and the time of discharge/end of the visit. Conclusions: Risk scores recommended by current guidelines for guiding decisions on DAPT duration are underused and misused in clinical practice. A PCI with multiple stents and a history of PAD resulted as the clinical variables more frequently associated with DAPT continuation beyond 1 year from the index MI

Young soldiers in Late Antiquity: two deaths in Northern Apulia between the Greek-Gothic war and the Lombard invasion

    No full text
The current work concerns the anthropological study of skeletal remains of two young adults involved in violent – and possibly related to war – combats. The two cases described are young male adults who both belong to the same territorial context and chronological span, between the Greek-Gothic war and the Lombard invasion, a period of great social and political upheavals in Italy, especially in Northern Apulia. This research is based on historical, archaeological, anthropological and paleopathological sources and it focuses on the role of young adults in Medieval society, especially during wars, showing labour differences defined by gender or age. Furthermore, the trauma analysis, such as the one which caused a death by beheading, allows us to reconstruct the dynamics, to hypothesize the weapons used, so that we can recreate a profile of the assaulters and the performance of certain rituals after the fighting. Finally, we can attest the presence of foreign fighters – maybe mercenaries or invaders – in Medieval Italy
