    A Three-Step Resolution-Reconfigurable Hazardous Multi-Gas Sensor Interface for Wireless Air-Quality Monitoring Applications

    This paper presents a resolution-reconfigurable wide-range resistive sensor readout interface for wireless multi-gas monitoring applications that displays results on a smartphone. Three types of sensing resolutions were selected to minimize processing power consumption, and a dual-mode front-end structure was proposed to support the detection of a variety of hazardous gases with wide range of characteristic resistance. The readout integrated circuit (ROIC) was fabricated in a 0.18 ??m CMOS process to provide three reconfigurable data conversions that correspond to a low-power resistance-to-digital converter (RDC), a 12-bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and a 16-bit delta-sigma modulator. For functional feasibility, a wireless sensor system prototype that included in-house microelectromechanical (MEMS) sensing devices and commercial device products was manufactured and experimentally verified to detect a variety of hazardous gases

    Understanding How People with Binge Eating Disorder and Bulimia Interact with Digital Food Content

    A large body of research has focused on understanding how online content and disordered eating behaviors are associated. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies investigating digital food content's influence on individuals with eating disorders. We conducted two rounds of studies (N=23 and 22, respectively) with individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) or bulimia nervosa (BN) to understand their motivations and practices of consuming digital food content. Our study reveals that individuals with BED and BN anticipate positive effects from food media to overcome their condition, but in practice, it often exacerbates their disorder. We also discovered that many individuals have experienced a cycle of quitting and returning to digital food content consumption. Based on these findings, we articulate design implications for digital food content and multimedia platforms to support vulnerable individuals in everyday online platform interactions.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figure

    Collaborative Score Distillation for Consistent Visual Synthesis

    Generative priors of large-scale text-to-image diffusion models enable a wide range of new generation and editing applications on diverse visual modalities. However, when adapting these priors to complex visual modalities, often represented as multiple images (e.g., video), achieving consistency across a set of images is challenging. In this paper, we address this challenge with a novel method, Collaborative Score Distillation (CSD). CSD is based on the Stein Variational Gradient Descent (SVGD). Specifically, we propose to consider multiple samples as "particles" in the SVGD update and combine their score functions to distill generative priors over a set of images synchronously. Thus, CSD facilitates seamless integration of information across 2D images, leading to a consistent visual synthesis across multiple samples. We show the effectiveness of CSD in a variety of tasks, encompassing the visual editing of panorama images, videos, and 3D scenes. Our results underline the competency of CSD as a versatile method for enhancing inter-sample consistency, thereby broadening the applicability of text-to-image diffusion models.Comment: Project page with visuals: https://subin-kim-cv.github.io/CSD

    The age of trauma: the prevalence and psychological impact of potentially traumatic exposures in South Korea

    BackgroundExposure to potentially traumatic events (PTE) is associated with a range of negative mental health outcomes, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD). Although exposure to PTEs is highly prevalent, and their impact on mental health is pervasive, research is mostly limited to diagnosed populations or specific trauma cohorts in the post-pandemic era.MethodsWe conducted an online survey of 1,000 Seoul residents from October 6-12, 2023, using a stratified sampling method. Participants were asked about their traumatic experiences, mental health outcomes, and experiences with mental health services.ResultsMost participants (98.8%) reported that they had experienced at least one PTE. The average number of PTEs reported was 9.19 (SD=7.908). Ninety participants (9%) were categorized as having probable PTSD (2.8% with PTSD only, and 6.2% with cPTSD). The sum of direct and indirect exposures to PTEs of individuals was associated with mental health outcomes, including PTSD symptom severity. Only 34.4% of patients with probable PTSD reported that they had received appropriate mental health services.ConclusionOur results suggest that PTE exposures are highly prevalent, and self-awareness of mental health conditions and utilization of mental health services are low in South Korea. Given the lasting effects of traumatic events and the large number of untreated cases, this study highlights the need for proactive responses to traumatic events and better access to short- and long-term services for traumatized individuals

    Insights into hepatocellular adenomas in Asia: molecular subtypes, clinical characteristics, imaging features, and hepatocellular carcinoma risks

    Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are benign monoclonal liver tumors. Advances in molecular studies have led to the identification of distinct subtypes of HCA with unique pathways, clinical characteristics, and complication risks, underscoring the need for precise diagnosis and tailored management. Malignant transformation and bleeding remain significant concerns. Imaging plays a crucial role in the identification of these subtypes, offering a non-invasive method to guide clinical decision-making. Most studies involving patients with HCAs have been conducted in Western populations; however, the number of studies focused on Asian population has increased in recent years. HCAs exhibit distinct features in Asian population, such as a higher prevalence among male patients and specific subtypes (e.g., inflammatory HCAs). Current clinical guidelines are predominantly influenced by Western data, which may not fully capture these regional differences in epidemiology and subtype distribution. Therefore, this review presents the updated molecular classification of HCAs and their epidemiologic differences between Asian and Western populations, and discuss the role of imaging techniques, particularly magnetic resonance imaging using hepatobiliary contrast agents, in classifying the subtypes and predicting the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma

    Propensity score matched analysis for the safety and effectiveness of remdesivir in COVID-19 patients with renal impairment

    Backgrounds Remdesivir (RDV) is an antiviral agent approved for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, is not recommended for patients with renal impairment. Due to limitations associated with prospective clinical trials, real-world data on the safety and efficacy of RDV in patients with renal impairment are necessary. Methods Propensity score-matched (PSM) retrospective analysis was conducted between March 2020 and September 2022 in COVID-19 patients with an eGFR < 30 mL/min in four Korean hospitals. The RDV treatment group was matched to the untreated control group. The safety and clinical outcomes in patients who received RDV were analyzed. Results A total of 564 patients were enrolled; 229 patients received RDV either for treatment or prophylaxis. On day 5, no difference in nephrotoxicity was observed between the two groups, and liver enzyme levels were within the normal range. In multivariate analysis for new dialysis, RDV treatment was not a risk factor for new dialysis. Among the 564 patients, 417 were indicated for a 5-day course of RDV treatment and 211 patients were treated with RDV. After PSM, no differences in the clinical outcomes were observed between the two groups. Conclusion RDV use in COVID-19 patients with renal impairment did not result in significant nephrotoxicity or hepatotoxicity.This work was supported by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases; and National Institute of Health Research Projects (#2022-ER1903-01)

    Quantifying prediction of pathogenicity for within-codon concordance (PM5) using 7541 functional classifications of BRCA1 and MSH2 missense variants.

    PURPOSE: Conditions and thresholds applied for evidence weighting of within-codon concordance (PM5) for pathogenicity vary widely between laboratories and expert groups. Because of the sparseness of available clinical classifications, there is little evidence for variation in practice. METHODS: We used as a truthset 7541 dichotomous functional classifications of BRCA1 and MSH2, spanning 311 codons of BRCA1 and 918 codons of MSH2, generated from large-scale functional assays that have been shown to correlate excellently with clinical classifications. We assessed PM5 at 5 stringencies with incorporation of 8 in silico tools. For each analysis, we quantified a positive likelihood ratio (pLR, true positive rate/false positive rate), the predictive value of PM5-lookup in ClinVar compared with the functional truthset. RESULTS: pLR was 16.3 (10.6-24.9) for variants for which there was exactly 1 additional colocated deleterious variant on ClinVar, and the variant under examination was equally or more damaging when analyzed using BLOSUM62. pLR was 71.5 (37.8-135.3) for variants for which there were 2 or more colocated deleterious ClinVar variants, and the variant under examination was equally or more damaging than at least 1 colocated variant when analyzed using BLOSUM62. CONCLUSION: These analyses support the graded use of PM5, with potential to use it at higher evidence weighting where more stringent criteria are met
