    Insecticidal Activity of the Leaf and Stem Water Extract of Gelsemium elegans against Solenopsis invicta

    A comprehensive green worker ants control method that can be used to replace traditional chemical synthetic insecticides. In this study, the leaves and stems of Gelsemium elegans were extracted with water as the solvent, and the bioactivity of G. elegans against worker ants was determined by the “water tube” method. The bioassay results of insecticidal activity showed that when the time was extended to the 10th day, the mortality of worker ants treated with G. elegans extract reached 55.00% (1/20 leaf extract), 46.67% (1/20 stem extract) and 45.00% (1 mg/kg koumine). And the behavioral impact test results showed that the aggregation rate was reduced to 56.67% (1/100 leaf extract), 60.00% (1/100 stem extract) and 60.00% (0.5 mg/kg koumine); the climbing rate was reduced to 60.00 % (1/100 leaf extract), 58.33% (1/100 stem extract) and 58.33% (0.5 mg/kg koumine). The effect on the walking ability of worker ants is obvious. The walking rate drops to 1.53cm/s (1/100 leaf extract), 1.60cm/s (1/100 stem extract) and 1.47cm/s (0.5 mg/kg koumine). Therefore, we conclude that the water extract of G. elegans can be used for long-term continuous control of worker ants, which can be used to replace traditional chemical synthetic insecticides

    The effect of transforming growth factor-β1 on nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells: insensitive to cell growth but functional to TGF-β/Smad pathway

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>This study explored the response of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells to TGF-β1-induced growth suppression and investigated the roles of the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The cells of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line CNE2 were treated with TGF-β1. The growth responses of CNE2 cells were analyzed by MTT assay. The mRNA expression and protein subcellular localization of the TGF-β/Smad signaling components in the CNE2 were determined by real time RT-PCR and immunocytochemical analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that the growth of CNE2 cells was not suppressed by TGF-β1. The signaling proteins TβRII, Smad 7 were expressed normally, while Smad2, Smad3, and Smad4 increased significantly at the mRNA level. TGF-β type II receptor and Smad7 had no change compared to the normal nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. In addition, Smad2 was phosphorylated to pSmad2, and the activated pSmad2 translocated into the nucleus from the cytoplasm, while the inhibitory Smad-Smad7 translocated from the nucleus to the cytoplasm after TGF-β1 stimulation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results suggested that CNE2 cells are not sensitive to growth suppression by TGF-β1, but the TGF-β/Smad signaling transduction is functional. Further work is needed to address a more detailed spectrum of the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway in CNE2 cells.</p

    Different physiological roles of insulin receptors in mediating nutrient metabolism in zebrafish

    Insulin, the most potent anabolic hormone, is critical for somatic growth and metabolism in vertebrates. Type 2 diabetes, which is the primary cause of hyperglycemia. results from an inability of insulin to signal glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. Our previous study showed that double knockout of insulin receptor a (insra) and b (insrb) caused beta-cell hyperplasia and lethality from 5 to 16 days postfertilization (dpf) (Yang BY, Zhai G, Gong YL, Su JZ, Han D, Yin Z, Xie SQ. Sci Bull (Beijing) 62: 486-492, 2017). In this study, we characterized the physiological roles of Insra and Insrb. in somatic growth and fueling metabolism, respectively. A high-carbohydrate diet was provided for insulin receptor knockout zebrafish from 60 to 120 dpf to investigate phenotype inducement and amplification. We observed hyperglycemia in both insra-/- fish and insrb-/- fish. Impaired growth hormone signaling, increased visceral adiposity, and fatty liver were detected in insrb-/- fish, which are phenotypes similar to the lipodystrophy observed in mammals. More importantly, significantly diminished protein levels of P-PPAR alpha, P-STATS, and IGF-1 were also observed in insrb-/- fish. In insra-/- fish, we observed increased protein content and decreased lipid content of the whole body. Taken together, although Insra and Insrb show overlapping roles in mediating glucose metabolism through the insulin-signaling pathway, Insrb is more prone to promoting lipid catabolism and protein synthesis through activation of the growth hormone-signaling pathway, whereas Insra primarily acts to promote lipid synthesis via glucose utilization.</p

    A simple scheme for quantum networks based on orbital angular momentum states of photons

    We propose a new quantum network scheme using orbital angular momentum states of photons to route the network and spin angular momentum states to encode the information. A four-user experimental scheme based on this efficient quantum network is analyzed in detail, which is particularly appealing for the free space quantum key distribution.     Experimental Generation of Spin-Photon Entanglement in Silicon Carbide

    A solid-state approach for quantum networks is advantages, as it allows the integration of nanophotonics to enhance the photon emission and the utilization of weakly coupled nuclear spins for long-lived storage. Silicon carbide, specifically point defects within it, shows great promise in this regard due to the easy of availability and well-established nanofabrication techniques. Despite of remarkable progresses made, achieving spin-photon entanglement remains a crucial aspect to be realized. In this paper, we experimentally generate entanglement between a silicon vacancy defect in silicon carbide and a scattered single photon in the zero-phonon line. The spin state is measured by detecting photons scattered in the phonon sideband. The photonic qubit is encoded in the time-bin degree-of-freedom and measured using an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Photonic correlations not only reveal the quality of the entanglement but also verify the deterministic nature of the entanglement creation process. By harnessing two pairs of such spin-photon entanglement, it becomes straightforward to entangle remote quantum nodes at long distance.Comment: 8 pages in total, 4 figures in the main text, 1 figure in the supplemental materia

    A longitudinal resource for population neuroscience of school-age children and adolescents in China

    During the past decade, cognitive neuroscience has been calling for population diversity to address the challenge of validity and generalizability, ushering in a new era of population neuroscience. The developing Chinese Color Nest Project (devCCNP, 2013–2022), the first ten-year stage of the lifespan CCNP (2013–2032), is a two-stages project focusing on brain-mind development. The project aims to create and share a large-scale, longitudinal and multimodal dataset of typically developing children and adolescents (ages 6.0–17.9 at enrolment) in the Chinese population. The devCCNP houses not only phenotypes measured by demographic, biophysical, psychological and behavioural, cognitive, affective, and ocular-tracking assessments but also neurotypes measured with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain morphometry, resting-state function, naturalistic viewing function and diffusion structure. This Data Descriptor introduces the first data release of devCCNP including a total of 864 visits from 479 participants. Herein, we provided details of the experimental design, sampling strategies, and technical validation of the devCCNP resource. We demonstrate and discuss the potential of a multicohort longitudinal design to depict normative brain growth curves from the perspective of developmental population neuroscience.
