Scattering mechanism in a step-modulated subwavelength metal slit: a multi-mode multi-reflection analysis
In this paper, the scattering/transmission inside a step-modulated
subwavelength metal slit is investigated in detail. We firstly investigate the
scattering in a junction structure by two types of structural changes. The
variation of transmission and reflection coefficients depending on structural
parameters are analyzed. Then a multi-mode multi-reflection model based on ray
theory is proposed to illustrate the transmission in the step-modulated slit
explicitly. The key parts of this model are the multi-mode excitation and the
superposition procedure of the scatterings from all possible modes, which
represent the interference and energy transfer happened at interfaces. The
method we use is an improved modal expansion method (MEM), which is a more
practical and efficient version compared with the previous one [Opt. Express
19, 10073 (2011)]. In addition, some commonly used methods, FDTD, scattering
matrix method, and improved characteristic impedance method, are compared with
MEM to highlight the preciseness of these methods.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure
Fractal Properties of Robust Strange Nonchaotic Attractors in Maps of Two or More Dimensions
We consider the existence of robust strange nonchaotic attractors (SNA's) in
a simple class of quasiperiodically forced systems. Rigorous results are
presented demonstrating that the resulting attractors are strange in the sense
that their box-counting dimension is N+1 while their information dimension is
N. We also show how these properties are manifested in numerical experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figure
Conversion of brain cytosol profile from fetal to adult type during the perinatal period: Taurine-NAA exchange
Mammals face drastic environmental changes at birth. Appropriate adjustments of various systems must take place rapidly to accommodate this once in a life time event. The brain undergoes significant adjustments as well, the most obvious of which is in its need to meet the drastic increase in energy consumption at the neuronal cell membrane due to the explosive increase in neural activities after birth. Actual changes were found to be taken place in two systems, namely, acid base balance control and cytosolic energy transport. The adjustments are accomplished by converting cytosol microenvironment from a taurine rich fetal type environment to an N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) rich adult type environment during the post-natal period. High concentrations of taurine are necessary to provide effective buffering in the fetal brain, because the fetus cannot utilize the adult type of pCO2 dependent acidābase balance control system, namely respiration driven pCO2 changes. To accommodate the significantly higher demand of energy consumption at the membrane due to the increased neuronal activities, taurine has to be replaced by NAA, since the latter facilitates HEP transport from mitochondria to the membrane by passive diffusion
