    Global contrail radiative forcing and the impact of diurnal variations of air the impact of diurnal variations of air

    International audienceWe combined high resolution aircraft flight data from the EU Fifth Framework Programme project AERO2k with analysis data from the ECMWF's integrated forecast system to calculate diurnally resolved 3-D contrail cover. Calibrating for the 1992 contrail cover in the Bakan area (eastern-Atlantic/western-Europe), we obtained a global, annual mean contrail cover due to persistent, line-shaped contrails of 0.04%. Adopting a contrail visible optical depth of 0.1, this contrail cover results in a global, annual mean radiative forcing of 2.0 mW/m2 for all-sky and 2.1 mW/m2 for clear sky conditions. Less than 40% of the global distance travelled by aircraft is due to flights during local night time. Yet, due to the cancellation of shortwave and longwave effects during daytime, night-flights contribute a disproportional 60 to 76% to the annual mean forcing. In general, regions with a significant local contrail radiative forcing are also regions for which night time flights amount to less than half of the daily total of flights. Neglecting diurnal variations in air traffic/contrail cover by assuming a diurnal mean contrail cover can therefore increase the global mean radiative forcing by up to 30%. Scaling the 1992 forcing for the year 2000 fuel usage and accounting for differences in contrail optical depth, our forcing estimate is at the lower end but within the range of the most recent results. This reinforces the finding that some earlier published estimates of contrail radiative forcing are likely to be too large. Our study builds confidence in the calculation of contrail radiative forcing. Once the amount and optical properties of contrails are known there is relatively little uncertainty about their radiative effects. However, global model calculations of contrail radiative forcing crucially rely on scaling their contrail cover with observations. We therefore see the urgent need for an update of area mean contrail cover values derived from multi-year analyses of observational data

    Ultra-high-resolution 3D imaging of atherosclerosis in mice with synchrotron differential phase contrast: a proof of concept study.

    The goal of this study was to investigate the performance of 3D synchrotron differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging for the visualization of both macroscopic and microscopic aspects of atherosclerosis in the mouse vasculature ex vivo. The hearts and aortas of 2 atherosclerotic and 2 wild-type control mice were scanned with DPC imaging with an isotropic resolution of 15 μm. The coronary artery vessel walls were segmented in the DPC datasets to assess their thickness, and histological staining was performed at the level of atherosclerotic plaques. The DPC imaging allowed for the visualization of complex structures such as the coronary arteries and their branches, the thin fibrous cap of atherosclerotic plaques as well as the chordae tendineae. The coronary vessel wall thickness ranged from 37.4 ± 5.6 μm in proximal coronary arteries to 13.6 ± 3.3 μm in distal branches. No consistent differences in coronary vessel wall thickness were detected between the wild-type and atherosclerotic hearts in this proof-of-concept study, although the standard deviation in the atherosclerotic mice was higher in most segments, consistent with the observation of occasional focal vessel wall thickening.     A broadband FFT spectrometer for radio and millimeter astronomy

    The core architecture, tests in the lab and first results of a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrometer are described. It is based on a commercially available fast digital sampler (AC240) with an on-board Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The spectrometer works continuously and has a remarkable total bandwidth of 1 GHz, resolved into 16384 channels. The data is sampled with 8 bits, yielding a dynamic range of 48 dB. An Allan time of more than 2000 s and an SFDR of 37 dB were measured.     An online survey of chiropractors' opinions of continuing education

    BACKGROUND: Continuing Education (CE) for chiropractors is mandatory for licensure in most North American jurisdictions. Numerous chiropractic colleges have begun collaborating with universities to offer master's degree programs. Distance education master's degree programs may be desirable to allow full-time practicing doctors to further their post-graduate education. The present survey sought to answer three questions. First, what is the level of satisfaction of chiropractors with their continuing education? Second, what is the level of interest of chiropractors in online master's degree programs? Lastly, what is the response rate of chiropractors to an online survey? METHODS: An online survey consisting of 22 multiple choice questions was e-mailed to 1000 chiropractors randomly selected from the mailing list of an online chiropractic newsletter. Upon completion of the questionnaire, participants' answers were saved on a secure site. Data analysis included evaluation of the demographic characteristics of the respondents, their opinions of and patterns of taking CE including online education, preferred learning formats, and their interest in proposed online master's degree programs. A survey response rate was determined. RESULTS: Nearly 86% of respondents felt their previously completed CE courses were either somewhat or extremely satisfactory. Over ninety percent of respondents who had completed online or distance CE coursesfound them to be somewhat or extremelysatisfactory. Almost half the respondents indicated that they most preferred online distance learning, while 34.08% most preferred face-to-face interaction. Fifty-three percent of respondents indicated an interest in starting a master's degree program; however 70.46% of respondents were interested in an online master's degree program that would offer CE credit. A response rate of 35.8% was obtained. CONCLUSION: Satisfaction among chiropractors with CE programs is high. The notion of completing a part-time online master's degree (or online combined with face-to-face interaction) appears to be popular among respondents, with a M.Sc. in Chiropractic Sciences being the most popular of those mentioned. Online surveys are a viable method of obtaining opinion in a cost and time efficient manner; there are some sources of bias involved in this type of research, and numerous steps need to be taken to obtain a suitable response rate

    Single breath-hold slice-following CSPAMM myocardial tagging

    Myocardial tagging has shown to be a useful magnetic resonance modality for the assessment and quantification of local myocardial function. Many myocardial tagging techniques suffer from a rapid fading of the tags, restricting their application mainly to systolic phases of the cardiac cycle. However, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction has been increasingly appreciated as a major cause of heart failure. Subtraction based slice-following CSPAMM myocardial tagging has shown to overcome limitations such as fading of the tags. Remaining impediments, to this technique, however, are extensive scanning times (∼10 min), the requirement of repeated breath-holds using a coached breathing pattern, and the enhanced sensitivity of artifacts related to poor patient compliance or inconsistent depths of end-expiratory breath-holds. We therefore propose a combination of slice-following CSPAMM myocardial tagging with a segmented EPI imaging sequence. Together with an optimized RF excitation scheme, this enables to acquire as many as 20 systolic and diastolic grid-tagged images per cardiac cycle with a high tagging contrast during a short period of sustained respiratio
