Active protection of native crayfish in the Kozienicka Primeval Forest
Objął on również Puszczę Kozienicką. Since the end of the nineteenth century, the populations of two native species of crayfish, noble crayfish Astacus astacus and narrow-clawed caryfish Astacus leptodactylus have started to decline drastically in fresh waters of Poland. The causes of this phenomenon are fresh waters degradation, environmental pollution from agriculture and industry, so as the spreading of alien species of crayfish and crayfish plaque. Thus, in 1999 the program of active protection of native crayfish started and covered, among others, the area of Kozienicka Primeval Forest. The existing populations of crayfish were searched and new habitats suitable for restocking were estimated. Experimental breeding of young crayfish for restocking program was undertaken in Department of Zoology in Warsaw Agricultural University. Starting from the year 1999, four populations of Astacus astacus in fresh waters of Kozienicka Primeval Forest were noticed. Although, three of them still exist. Moreover, the occurrence of American crayfish Orconectes limosus is also observed. In 2003 restocking of both native species in the selected waters of Kozienicka Primeval Forest started and is currently under monitoring
Identification of live caddies flies larvae for the purpose of zoological indication
The pre-studies were conducted in
order to elaborate methodology for identification of live caddis fl ies larvae. Moreover,
the possibilities of using these methods are
shown. The study showed that it is possible
to identify live caddies flies larvae to family
level. Cultures conducted in natural habitat
revealed that caddies flies can rebuild cases
but their quality varies
Perccottus glenii in oxbow lakes of the vistula river in the Mazovian Lowland in Poland and Wetland in Belarus (Near Drohiczyn)
The aim of the study was to record the occurrence several populations of Perccottus glenii from small drainage canals in wetland in Belarus (near Drohiczyn) and small Vistula oxbow lakes in Mazovia (Poland). Probably, populations of Perccottus glenii can eliminate larval and juvenile forms of local amphibians
Characteristic of channel processes in the border Odra in the frame of Ist meander
Praca dotyczy badań rumowiska dennego na meandrującym odcinku Odry
granicznej w rejonie Meandra nr I. Na skutek procesów fluwialnych koryto Odry
podlega przeobrażeniom prowadzącym do częstych zmian trasy rzeki. W czasie
historycznym nastąpiło wielokrotne przerwanie meandrów, ostatnie dwa w 1967 r.
(Meander IV) i w 1997 r. (Meander I). W starym korycie maleje stopniowo natężenie
przepływu, a większość wody płynie nowym korytem. Wskutek tego następuje
stopniowe zamulanie starego koryta.
Wierzchnia warstwa rumowiska dennego podlega
procesowi sortowania ziarnowego i tworzenia obrukowania. Wielkość ziaren tworzących
opancerzenie wynosi 8,4–9,8 cm, a głębsze warstwy (20–40 cm) mają
uziarnienie d50 = 2,3–2,9 cm. Wyspy zbudowane z materiałów drobnoziarnistych zostały
w ciągu 3–4 lat pokryte roślinnością krzewiastą i drzewiastą. Ten proces prowadzi
do znacznego zmniejszenia prędkości przepływu w starorzeczu. Wzrost natężenia
przepływu w nowym korycie powoduje erozję brzegów i odkładanie erodowanego
materiału (żwir i kamienie) poniżej Meandra nr I w postaci odsypisk (fot. 1, 2).Paper concerns the investigations of riverbed sediments in the meandering
sector of the Border Odra, In the frame of meander I. As a result of fluvial processes
the Odra riverbed is exposed to deformations, leading to often changes of the
river itinerary. In the historical time, many meander breaks were registered, the
last in 1967 (Meander IV) and in 1997 (Meander I). In the old river bed the discharge is gradually decreasing and the substantial
part of the discharge is flowinging through the new channel. It leads to gradual silting
of the old river part. The intensive formation of bars and of islands is observed. In the
upper part of the old meander, mainly the bed load is deposed, and in the middle and
lower part – the suspended load. The superficial part of the layer (cover) is exposed to
the formation of pavement. The size of the pavement cover is equal 8,4–9,8 cm, and the
granulometry of the lower layer (20–40 cm) equal to d50 = 2,3–2,9 cm. The islands
formed by fine sediments were covered in 3-4 years by intensive vegetation (trees and
bushes). This process causes an important decreasing of flow velocity in the old channel.
The increasing of the flow discharge in the new channel leads to the erosion of
banks and to the deposition of the eroded material (gravel and stones) downstream of
the Meander I, in the form of bars (Photographs 1 and 2)
Epibionty krewetek akwariowych hodowanych na Tajwanie.
Epibionts of ornamental freshwater shrimps bred in Taiwan. One of the major problems in breeding Neocaridina davidi in Taiwanese aquaculture ponds are epibionts found on the body of ornamental shrimp. These organisms affect shrimp wellbeing by causing distress which leads directly to shrimp weakness, loss of colour and even casualties. They can also be observed in imported shrimps which put in danger individuals bred in Europe, mostly characterised by high level of inbreeding and sensitivity to pathogens. Microscopic analyses indicated presence of 6 freshwater shrimp epibionts. Some of them showing parasitic lifestyle (Cladogonium ogishimae, Saprolegnia sp., Scutariella japonica), others (phyla Ciliophora and Rotifera) may indicate level of organic matter in water. To allow an effective treatment and control of the spread of parasites, all of their preferred locations on shrimp body observer in this study should be checked and become a vital part of diagnostic methods. Researches on ornamental freshwater shrimps’ epibionts are important to achieve success in shrimp breeding as well as to effectively monitor epibiont populations globally, especially that in some regions they may become potentially invasive organisms to the native crustaceans.
