Integrated comparative validation tests as an aid for building simulation tool users and developers
Published validation tests developed within major research projects have been an invaluable aid to program developers to check on their programs. This paper sets out how selected ASHRAE Standard 140-2004 and European CEN standards validation tests have been incorporated into the ESP-r simulation program so that they can be easily run by users and also discusses some of the issues associated with compliance checking. Embedding the tests within a simulation program allows program developers to check routinely whether updates to the simulation program have led to significant changes in predictions and to run sensitivity tests to check on the impact of alternative algorithms. Importantly, it also allows other users to undertake the tests to check that their installation is correct and to give them, and their clients, confidence in results. This paper also argues that validation tests should characterize some of the significant heat transfer processes (particularly internal surface convection) in greater detail in order to reduce the acceptance bands for program predictions. This approach is preferred to one in which validation tests are overly prescriptive (e.g., specifying fixed internal convection coefficients), as these do not reflect how programs are used in practice
Molecular dynamics simulations of oxide memory resistors (memristors)
Reversible bipolar nano-switches that can be set and read electronically in a
solid-state two-terminal device are very promising for applications. We have
performed molecular-dynamics simulations that mimic systems with oxygen
vacancies interacting via realistic potentials and driven by an external bias
voltage. The competing short- and long-range interactions among charged mobile
vacancies lead to density fluctuations and short-range ordering, while
illustrating some aspects of observed experimental behavior, such as memristor

The Moyal bracket and the dispersionless limit of the KP hierarchy
A new Lax equation is introduced for the KP hierarchy which avoids the use of
pseudo-differential operators, as used in the Sato approach. This Lax equation
is closer to that used in the study of the dispersionless KP hierarchy, and is
obtained by replacing the Poisson bracket with the Moyal bracket. The
dispersionless limit, underwhich the Moyal bracket collapses to the Poisson

Re-examining the consumption-wealth relationship : the role of model uncertainty
This paper discusses the consumption-wealth relationship. Following the recent influential workof Lettau and Ludvigson [e.g. Lettau and Ludvigson (2001), (2004)], we use data on consumption, assets andlabor income and a vector error correction framework. Key …ndings of their work are that consumption doesrespond to permanent changes in wealth in the expected manner, but that most changes in wealth are transitoryand have no e¤ect on consumption. We investigate the robustness of these results to model uncertainty andargue for the use of Bayesian model averaging. We …nd that there is model uncertainty with regards to thenumber of cointegrating vectors, the form of deterministic components, lag length and whether the cointegratingresiduals a¤ect consumption and income directly. Whether this uncertainty has important empirical implicationsdepends on the researcher's attitude towards the economic theory used by Lettau and Ludvigson. If we workwith their model, our findings are very similar to theirs. However, if we work with a broader set of models andlet the data speak, we obtain somewhat di¤erent results. In the latter case, we …nd that the exact magnitudeof the role of permanent shocks is hard to estimate precisely. Thus, although some support exists for the viewthat their role is small, we cannot rule out the possibility that they have a substantive role to play
Observables for spacetimes with two Killing field symmetries
The Einstein equations for spacetimes with two commuting spacelike Killing
field symmetries are studied from a Hamiltonian point of view. The complexified
Ashtekar canonical variables are used, and the symmetry reduction is performed
directly in the Hamiltonian theory. The reduced system corresponds to the field
equations of the SL(2,R) chiral model with additional constraints.
On the classical phase space, a method of obtaining an infinite number of
constants of the motion, or observables, is given. The procedure involves
writing the Hamiltonian evolution equations as a single `zero curvature'
equation, and then employing techniques used in the study of two dimensional
integrable models. Two infinite sets of observables are obtained explicitly as
functionals of the phase space variables. One set carries sl(2,R) Lie algebra
indices and forms an infinite dimensional Poisson algebra, while the other is
formed from traces of SL(2,R) holonomies that commute with one another. The
restriction of the (complex) observables to the Euclidean and Lorentzian
sectors is discussed.
It is also shown that the sl(2,R) observables can be associated with a

The UK Voluntary Monitoring Schemes for Pig Health and Welfare: working towards improved health status
A pork industry with high health status will have less disease, use fewer antibiotics and present less risk to public health. The United Kingdom has three voluntary pig health schemes (PHS); Wholesome Pigs Scotland (WPS) in Scotland, the BPEX Pig Health Scheme (BPHS) in England and Wales and the Pig Regen health and welfare checks (NIH&W). They capture information on different macroscopic conditions detected in slaughter pigs. In this study, the prevalence, seasonal variations and year trends of eight conditions as assessed by these PHS were compared and evaluated. Data collected between July 2005 and December 2012 were used. In total 2,061,779 pigs, from 4,420 pig units in 46,321 batches of pigs supplied to 25 abattoirs were examined. The respiratory conditions assessed were: enzootic pneumonia-like lesions, pleurisy, pleuropneumonia, abscesses in the lung; while the non-respiratory conditions were: pericarditis (PC), milk spots (MS), papular dermatitis (PD) and tail biting. The shape of year and seasonal effects among schemes were visualised and the effects were quantified across schemes. The shapes of year trend differed between the PHS for respiratory conditions but were similar for non-respiratory conditions. WPS and NIH&W had a lower prevalence of respiratory conditions than BPHS. This was also observed for PC and PD; however, BPHS had a lower prevalence for MS compared to the other schemes. Non-respiratory lesions showed marked seasonal effects. Continuous standardised monitoring of lesions at slaughter is an effective tool for monitoring disease incidence. Early detection of changes, when combined with comparison of similar schemes in countries with a similar profile of pig production and management, could enable prompt investigation and ultimately lead to ‘safer’ pork
The effect of weather on porcine disease conditions using data from the UK voluntary pig health schemes
Previous studies of macroscopic conditions detected in slaughter pigs at abattoir through voluntary pig health schemes have shown that some lesions have strong seasonal effects. This led us to investigate if weather and other climatic conditions are associated with increases or decreases in the prevalence of the conditions
Association Between Raised Inflammatory Markers and Cognitive Decline in Elderly People With Type 2 Diabetes: The Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study
OBJECTIVE-To determine whether circulating levels of the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha are associated with cognitive ability and estimated lifetime cognitive decline in an elderly population with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-A cross-sectional study of 1,066 men and women aged 60-75 years with type 2 diabetes and living in Lothian, Scotland (the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study), was performed. Seven cognitive tests were used to measure abilities in memory, nonverbal reasoning, information processing speed, executive function, and mental flexibility. The results were used to derive a general intelligence factor (g). A vocabulary-based test was administered as an estimate of peak prior cognitive ability. Results on the cognitive tests were assessed for statistical association with inflammatory markers measured in a venous blood sample at the time of cognitive testing. RESULTS-Higher IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels were associated with poorer age- and sex-adjusted scores on the majority of the individual cognitive tests. They were also associated with g using standardized regression coefficients -0.074 to -0.173 (P < 0.05). After adjusting for vocabulary, education level, cardiovascular dysfunction, duration of diabetes, and glycemic control, R,6 remained associated with three of the cognitive tests and with g. CONCLUSIONS-In this representative population of people with type 2 diabetes, elevated circulating levels of inflammatory markers were associated with poorer cognitive ability. A class of nonlinear wave equations containing the continuous Toda case
We consider a nonlinear field equation which can be derived from a binomial
lattice as a continuous limit. This equation, containing a perturbative
friction-like term and a free parameter , reproduces the Toda case (in
absence of the friction-like term) and other equations of physical interest, by
choosing particular values of . We apply the symmetry and the
approximate symmetry approach, and the prolongation technique. Our main purpose
is to check the limits of validity of different analytical methods in the study
of nonlinear field equations. We show that the equation under investigation
with the friction-like term is characterized by a finite-dimensional Lie
algebra admitting a realization in terms of boson annhilation and creation
operators. In absence of the friction-like term, the equation is linearized and
connected with equations of the Bessel type. Examples of exact solutions are

Twistor theory of hyper-K{\"a}hler metrics with hidden symmetries
We briefly review the hierarchy for the hyper-K\"ahler equations and define a
notion of symmetry for solutions of this hierarchy. A four-dimensional
hyper-K\"ahler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it embeds into a hierarchy
with a symmetry. It is shown that a hyper-K\"ahler metric admits a hidden
symmetry if it admits a certain Killing spinor. We show that if the hidden
symmetry is tri-holomorphic, then this is equivalent to requiring symmetry
along a higher time and the hidden symmetry determines a `twistor group' action
as introduced by Bielawski \cite{B00}. This leads to a construction for the
solution to the hierarchy in terms of linear equations and variants of the
generalised Legendre transform for the hyper-K\"ahler metric itself given by
Ivanov & Rocek \cite{IR96}. We show that the ALE spaces are examples of
hyper-K\"ahler metrics admitting three tri-holomorphic Killing spinors. These
metrics are in this sense analogous to the 'finite gap' solutions in soliton
theory. Finally we extend the concept of a hierarchy from that of \cite{DM00}
for the four-dimensional hyper-K\"ahler equations to a generalisation of the
conformal anti-self-duality equations and briefly discuss hidden symmetries for
