    Turboprop cargo aircraft systems study

    The effects of using advanced turboprop propulsion systems to reduce the fuel consumption and direct operating costs of cargo aircraft were studied, and the impact of these systems on aircraft noise and noise prints around a terminal area was determined. Parametric variations of aircraft and propeller characteristics were investigated to determine their effects on noiseprint areas, fuel consumption, and direct operating costs. From these results, three aircraft designs were selected and subjected to design refinements and sensitivity analyses. Three competitive turbofan aircraft were also defined from parametric studies to provide a basis for comparing the two types of propulsion

    Fusion rules and vortices in px+ipyp_x+ip_y superconductors

    The "half-quantum" vortices (σ\sigma) and quasiparticles (ψ\psi) in a two-dimensional px+ipyp_x+ip_y superconductor obey the Ising-like fusion rules ψ×ψ=1\psi\times \psi=1, σ×ψ=σ\sigma\times \psi=\sigma, and σ×σ=1+ψ\sigma\times \sigma= 1+\psi. We explain how the physical fusion of vortex-antivortex pairs allows us to use these rules to read out the information encoded in the topologically protected space of degenerate ground states.     Advanced composite aileron for L-1011 transport aircraft, task 1

    Structural design and maintainability criteria were established and used as a guideline for evaluating a variety of configurations and materials for each of the major subcomponents. From this array of subcomponent designs, several aileron assemblies were formulated and analyzed. The selected design is a multirib configuration with sheet skin covers mechanically fastened to channel section ribs and spars. Qualitative analysis of currently available composite material systems led to the selection of three candidate materials on which comparative structural tests were conducted to measure the effects of environment and impact damage on mechanical property retention. In addition, each system was evaluated for producibility characteristics. From these tests, Thornel 300/5208 unidirectional tape was selected for the front spar and covers, and Thornel 300 fabric/5208 was chosen for the ribs

    Infinite Symmetry in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

    We have generalized recent results of Cappelli, Trugenberger and Zemba on the integer quantum Hall effect constructing explicitly a W1+∞{\cal W}_{1+\infty} for the fractional quantum Hall effect such that the negative modes annihilate the Laughlin wave functions. This generalization has a nice interpretation in Jain's composite fermion theory. Furthermore, for these models we have calculated the wave functions of the edge excitations viewing them as area preserving deformations of an incompressible quantum droplet, and have shown that the W1+∞{\cal W}_{1+\infty} is the underlying symmetry of the edge excitations in the fractional quantum Hall effect.     The role of interplanetary scattering in western hemisphere large solar energetic particle events

    Using high-sensitivity instruments on the ACE spacecraft, we have examined the intensities of O and Fe in 14 large solar energetic particle events whose parent activity was in the solar western hemisphere. Sampling the intensities at low (~273 keV nucleon to the -1) and high (~12 MeV nucleon to the -1) energies, we find that at the same kinetic energy per nucleon, the Fe/O ratio decreases with time, as has been reported previously. This behavior is seen in more than 70% of the cases during the rise to maximum intensity and continues in most cases into the decay phase. We find that for most events if we compare the Fe intensity with the O intensity at a higher kinetic energy per nucleon, the two time-intensity profiles are strikingly similar. Examining alternate scenarios that could produce this behavior, we conclude that for events showing this behavior the most likely explanation is that the Fe and O share similar injection profiles near the Sun, and that scattering in the interplanetary medium dominates the profiles observed at 1 AU

    The magnetic properties of 177^{\rm 177}Hf and 180^{\rm 180}Hf in the strong coupling deformed model

    This paper reports NMR measurements of the magnetic dipole moments of two high-K isomers, the 37/2−^-, 51.4 m, 2740 keV state in 177^{\rm 177}Hf and the 8−^-, 5.5 h, 1142 keV state in 180^{\rm 180}Hf by the method of on-line nuclear orientation. Also included are results on the angular distributions of gamma transitions in the decay of the 177^{\rm 177}Hf isotope. These yield high precision E2/M1 multipole mixing ratios for transitions in bands built on the 23/2+^+, 1.1 s, isomer at 1315 keV and on the 9/2+^+, 0.663 ns, isomer at 321 keV. The new results are discussed in the light of the recently reported finding of systematic dependence of the behavior of the gR_{\rm R} parameter upon the quasi-proton and quasi-neutron make up of high-K isomeric states in this region.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Persistence of magnons in a site-diluted dimerized frustrated antiferromagnet

    We present inelastic neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements characterizing the magnetic excitations in a disordered non-magnetic substituted spin-liquid antiferromagnet. The parent compound Ba3Mn2O8 is a dimerized, quasi-two-dimensional geometrically frustrated quantum disordered antiferromagnet. We substitute this compound with non-magnetic vanadium for the S = 1 manganese atoms, Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8, and find that the singlet-triplet excitations which dominate the spectrum of the parent compound persist for the full range of substitution examined, x = 0.02 to 0.3. We also observe additional low-energy magnetic fluctuations which are enhanced at the greatest substitution values. These excitations may be a precursor to a low-temperature random singlet phase which may exist in Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8Comment: 30 pages, 9 figure
