Considerations for Occupational Therapists in Developing Community-Level Interventions for Youth with High Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Drug misuse likely contributes to the over 30,000 children in foster care and to the 24.2% of children who have experienced two or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Twenty-five percent of children are living in poverty, with nearly half of those living in single-parent households. Among the national guidelines to preventing ACEs are connecting youth with positive activities and providing family relationship enhancement opportunities. We believe the profession of occupational therapy can help contribute to the mental and behavioral health care workforce in a greater capacity than is currently used. Many children are not afforded the opportunity to engage in novel leisure pursuits that are essential for positive mental health function and well-being. Occupational therapists can assist in creating a culture of health and equity for youth by harnessing the power of play and leisure to promote self-healing communities

Neutral Gas Outflows and Inflows in Infrared-Faint Seyfert Galaxies
Previous studies of the Na I D interstellar absorption line doublet have
shown that galactic winds occur in most galaxies with high infrared
luminosities. However, in infrared-bright composite systems where a starburst
coexists with an active galactic nucleus (AGN), it is unclear whether the
starburst, the AGN, or both are driving the outflows. The present paper
describes the results from a search for outflows in 35 infrared-faint Seyferts
with 10^9.9 < L_IR/L_sun < 10^11, or, equivalently, star formation rates (SFR)
of ~0.4 -- 9 solar masses per year, to attempt to isolate the source of the
outflow. We find that the outflow detection rates for the infrared-faint
Seyfert 1s (6%) and Seyfert 2s (18%) are lower than previously reported for
infrared-luminous Seyfert 1s (50%) and Seyfert 2s (45%). The outflow kinematics
of infrared-faint and infrared-bright Seyfert 2 galaxies resemble those of
starburst galaxies, while the outflow velocities in Seyfert 1 galaxies are
significantly larger. Taken together, these results suggest that the AGN does
not play a significant role in driving the outflows in most infrared-faint and
infrared-bright systems, except the high-velocity outflows seen in Seyfert 1
galaxies. Another striking result of this study is the high rate of detection
of inflows in infrared-faint galaxies (39% of Seyfert 1s, 35% of Seyfert 2s),
significantly larger than in infrared-luminous Seyferts (15%). This inflow may
be contributing to the feeding of the AGN in these galaxies, and potentially
provides more than enough material to power the observed nuclear activity over

Finance, Development, and Remittances: Extending the Scale of Accumulation in Migrant Labour Regimes
The last decade has seen a heightened level of interest in the relationship between
remittances and development, driven by the World Bank and other Bretton Woods Institutions. This has materialised in a global agenda to incorporate migrants and their households in commercial banking. The double significance of this policy rests in the financial incorporation of migrants and their households, and in the deepening entrenchment of the historical labour migration dynamic between sending communities and centres of capital. The central role of labour power in the advance of money forms the core of this analysis of a contemporary market-building strategy. This article presents a threefold critique of the global remittance agenda, based on (1) its transformative profit-driven development ideology, (2) its detachment of remittances from the political economy of migrant labour regimes, and (3) its
dismissal of existing modes of remitting and uses of the funds
Boron isotope sensitivity to seawater pH change in a species of Neogoniolithon coralline red alga
The increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) observed since the industrial revolution has reduced surface ocean pH by ∼0.1 pH units, with further change in the oceanic system predicted in the coming decades. Calcareous organisms can be negatively affected by extreme changes in seawater pH (pHsw) such as this due to the associated changes in the oceanic carbonate system. The boron isotopic composition (δ11B) of biogenic carbonates has been previously used to monitor pH at the calcification site (pHcf) in scleractinian corals, providing mechanistic insights into coral biomineralisation and the impact of variable pHsw on this process. Motivated by these investigations, this study examines the δ11B of the high-Mg calcite skeleton of the coralline red alga Neogoniolithon sp. to constrain pHcf, and investigates how this taxon’s pHcf is impacted by ocean acidification. δ11B was measured in multiple algal replicates (n = 4–5) cultured at four different pCO2 scenarios – averaging (±1σ) 409 (±6), 606 (±7), 903 (±12) and 2856 (±54) μatm, corresponding to average pHsw (±1σ) of 8.19 (±0.03), 8.05 (±0.06), 7.91 (±0.03) and 7.49 (±0.02) respectively. Results show that skeletal δ11B is elevated relative to the δ11B of seawater borate at all pHsw treatments by up to 18‰. Although substantial variability in δ11B exists between replicate samples cultured at a given pHsw (smallest range = 2.32‰ at pHsw 8.19, largest range = 6.08‰ at pHsw 7.91), strong correlations are identified between δ11B and pHsw (R2 = 0.72, p < 0.0001, n = 16) and between δ11B and B/Ca (R2 = 0.72, p < 0.0001, n = 16). Assuming that skeletal δ11B reflects pHcf as previously observed for scleractinian corals, the average pHcf across all experiments was 1.20 pH units (0.79 to 1.56) higher than pHsw, with the magnitude of this offset varying parabolically with decreasing pHsw, with a maximum difference between pHsw and pHcf at a pHsw of 7.91. Observed relationships between pHsw and calcification rate, and between pHsw and pHcf, suggest that coralline algae exhibit some resilience to moderate ocean acidification via increase of pHcf relative to pHsw in a similar manner to scleractinian corals. However, these results also indicate that pHcf cannot be sufficiently increased by algae exposed to a larger reduction in pHsw, adversely impacting calcification rates of coralline red algae
Principal variable selection to explain grain yield variation in winter wheat from features extracted from UAV imagery
Background: Automated phenotyping technologies are continually advancing the breeding process. However, collecting various secondary traits throughout the growing season and processing massive amounts of data still take great efforts and time. Selecting a minimum number of secondary traits that have the maximum predictive power has the potential to reduce phenotyping efforts. The objective of this study was to select principal features extracted from UAV imagery and critical growth stages that contributed the most in explaining winter wheat grain yield. Five dates of multispectral images and seven dates of RGB images were collected by a UAV system during the spring growing season in 2018. Two classes of features (variables), totaling to 172 variables, were extracted for each plot from the vegetation index and plant height maps, including pixel statistics and dynamic growth rates. A parametric algorithm, LASSO regression (the least angle and shrinkage selection operator), and a non-parametric algorithm, random forest, were applied for variable selection. The regression coefficients estimated by LASSO and the permutation importance scores provided by random forest were used to determine the ten most important variables influencing grain yield from each algorithm.
Results: Both selection algorithms assigned the highest importance score to the variables related with plant height around the grain filling stage. Some vegetation indices related variables were also selected by the algorithms mainly at earlier to mid growth stages and during the senescence. Compared with the yield prediction using all 172 variables derived from measured phenotypes, using the selected variables performed comparable or even better. We also noticed that the prediction accuracy on the adapted NE lines (r = 0.58–0.81) was higher than the other lines (r = 0.21–0.59) included in this study with different genetic backgrounds.
Conclusions: With the ultra-high resolution plot imagery obtained by the UAS-based phenotyping we are now able to derive more features, such as the variation of plant height or vegetation indices within a plot other than just an averaged number, that are potentially very useful for the breeding purpose. However, too many features or variables can be derived in this way. The promising results from this study suggests that the selected set from those variables can have comparable prediction accuracies on the grain yield prediction than the full set of them but possibly resulting in a better allocation of efforts and resources on phenotypic data collection and processing
The Impact of a Sensory-Based Parent Coaching Program on the Occupational Performance of Toddlers with Developmental Disabilities
Indiana University Purdue University IndianapolisSensory processing challenges are common in children ages 0 to 3 receiving early intervention services and interfere with the occupational performance of children during family mealtimes, playtimes, self-care activities, and community outings. This program utilized 9 to 10 in-home parent coaching sessions to implement sensory strategies addressing parent identified occupational performance problems with 6 families. Pre- and post-test results indicated a significant improvement in parent ratings of child performance and parent satisfaction following the parent coaching program. This study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of parent coaching strategies when working with pediatric populations and specifically demonstrates the potential value of the coaching model in implementing sensory strategies.Occupational Therap
Utilizing Student Consultation to Promote Incorporation of Occupational Therapy in a Pediatric Behavioral Health Unit Occupational Therapy in a Pediatric Behavioral Health Unit
This advanced graduate elective was designed for second year Master of Occupational Therapy students to provide opportunities for students to act as consultants of the profession and collaborators within the community utilizing community engaged learning methods. This elective helped to detail components of evidence-based practice, primary needs of integration, and future opportunities within an urban pediatric behavioral health unit. The practice area of mental health was chosen specifically as the collaborating site due to the decline of occupational therapist recognition as qualified mental and behavioral health providers. This lack of recognition may limit reimbursement and funding, and decrease employment opportunities, both detriments to practice. However, within the last decade there has been a resurgence in establishing the profession’s roots within mental and behavioral health practice. Several key pieces of federal legislation have recognized occupational therapists' expertise and have cited the profession in several mental and behavioral health initiatives. Many states are seeking recognition of occupational therapists as qualified behavioral health providers (QBHP) or qualified mental health providers (QMHP) and this elective provided the opportunity for didactic instruction to intersect with advocacy and education while producing a rich learning experiences for all involved
