A diagrammatic treatment of neutrino oscillations
We present a covariant wave-packet approach to neutrino flavor transitions in
vacuum. The approach is based on the technique of macroscopic Feynman diagrams
describing the lepton number violating processes of production and absorption
of virtual massive neutrinos at the macroscopically separated space-time
regions ("source" and "detector"). Accordingly, the flavor transitions are a
result of interference of the diagrams with neutrinos of different masses in
the intermediate states. The statistically averaged probability of the process
is representable as a multidimensional integral of the product of the factors
which describe the differential flux density of massless neutrinos from the
source, differential cross section of the neutrino interaction with the
detector and a dimensionless factor responsible for the flavor transition. The
conditions are analyzed under which the last factor can be treated as the

Effects of neutrino oscillations and neutrino magnetic moments on elastic neutrino-electron scattering
We consider elastic antineutrino-electron scattering taking into account
possible effects of neutrino masses and mixing and of neutrino magnetic moments
and electric dipole moments. Having in mind antineutrinos produced in a nuclear
reactor we compute, in particular, the weak-electromagnetic interference terms
which are linear in the magnetic (electric dipole) moments and also in the
neutrino masses. We show that these terms are, however, suppressed compared to
the pure weak and electromagnetic cross section. We also comment upon the
possibility of using the electromagnetic cross section to investigate neutrino

Object Serialization and Deserialization Using XML
Interoperability of potentially heterogeneous databases has been an ongoing
research issue for a number of years in the database community. With the trend
towards globalization of data location and data access and the consequent
requirement for the coexistence of new data stores with legacy systems, the
cooperation and data interchange between data repositories has become
increasingly important. The emergence of the eXtensible Markup Language (XML)
as a database independent representation for data offers a suitable mechanism
for transporting data between repositories. This paper describes a research
activity within a group at CERN (called CMS) towards identifying and
implementing database serialization and deserialization methods that can be
used to replicate or migrate objects across the network between CERN and
worldwide centres using XML to serialize the contents of multiple objects

Higher-order non-symmetric counterterms in pure Yang-Mills theory
We analyze the restoration of the Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identities for pure
massless Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge within the BPHZL renormalization
scheme with IR regulator. We obtain the most general form of the action-like
part of the symmetric regularized action, obeying the relevant ST identities
and all other relevant symmetries of the model, to all orders in the loop
expansion. We also give a cohomological characterization of the fulfillment of
BPHZL IR power-counting criterion, guaranteeing the existence of the limit
where the IR regulator goes to zero. The technique analyzed in this paper is
needed in the study of the restoration of the ST identities for those models,
like the MSSM, where massless particles are present and no invariant
regularization scheme is known to preserve the full set of ST identities of the

Neutrino oscillations and the effect of the finite lifetime of the neutrino source
We consider a neutrino source at rest and discuss a condition for the
existence of neutrino oscillations which derives from the finite lifetime
of the neutrino source particle. This condition is present if the
neutrino source is a free particle such that its wave function is
non-stationary. For a Gaussian wave function and with some simplifying
assumptions, we study the modification of the usual oscillation probability
stemming from . In the present accelerator experiments the effect of
can be neglected. We discuss some experimental situations where the

Preclinical animal acute toxicity studies of new developed MRI contrast agent based on gadolinium
Acute toxicity test of new developed MRI contrast agent based on disodium salt of gadopentetic acid complex were carried out on Mus musculus and Sprague Dawley rats according to guidelines of preclinical studies [1]. Groups of six animals each were selected for experiment. Death and clinical symptoms of animals were recorded during 14 days. As a result the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) for female mice is 2.8 mМ/kg of body weight, male mice - 1.4 mМ/kg, female rats - 2.8 mМ/kg, male rats - 5.6 mМ/kg of body weight. No Observed Adverse Effect Dose (NOAEL) for female mice is 1.4 mМ/kg, male mice - 0.7 mМ/kg, male and female rats - 0.7 mМ/kg. Anomalously large oxygen-ordering contribution to the thermal expansion of untwinned YBa2Cu3O6.95 single crystals: a glass-like transition near room temperature
We present high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies from 5 - 500 K of
untwinned YBa2Cu3Ox (Y123) single crystals for x ~ 6.95 and x = 7.0. Large
contributions to the thermal expansivities due to O-ordering are found for x ~
6.95, which disappear below a kinetic glass-like transition near room
temperature. The kinetics at this glass transition is governed by an energy
barrier of 0.98 +- 0.07 eV, in very good agreement with other O-ordering
studies. Using thermodynamic arguments, we show that O-ordering in the Y123
system is particularly sensitive to uniaxial pressure (stress) along the chain
axis and that the lack of well-ordered chains in Nd123 and La123 is most likely
a consequence of a chemical-pressure effect.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR
Distributed Computing Grid Experiences in CMS
The CMS experiment is currently developing a computing system capable of serving, processing and archiving the large number of events that will be generated when the CMS detector starts taking data. During 2004 CMS undertook a large scale data challenge to demonstrate the ability of the CMS computing system to cope with a sustained data-taking rate equivalent to 25% of startup rate. Its goals were: to run CMS event reconstruction at CERN for a sustained period at 25 Hz input rate; to distribute the data to several regional centers; and enable data access at those centers for analysis. Grid middleware was utilized to help complete all aspects of the challenge. To continue to provide scalable access from anywhere in the world to the data, CMS is developing a layer of software that uses Grid tools to gain access to data and resources, and that aims to provide physicists with a user friendly interface for submitting their analysis jobs. Spontaneous splenic rupture in an active duty Marine upon return from Iraq: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Atraumatic splenic rupture is a rare event that has been associated with several infectious disease processes. In the active duty military population, potential exposure to these pathogens is significant. Here we discuss the case of an active duty Marine with spontaneous splenic rupture upon return from a six-month deployment in Iraq.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A previously healthy 30-year-old Caucasian male active duty Marine presented with abdominal pain, fever and diarrhea after deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Based on clinical and radiographic evidence, a diagnosis of spontaneous splenic rupture was ultimately suspected. After exploratory laparotomy with confirmation of rupture, splenectomy was performed, and the patient made a full, uneventful recovery. Histopathologic examination revealed mild splenomegaly with a ruptured capsule of undetermined cause.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare event that may lead to life-threatening hemorrhage if not diagnosed and treated quickly. Although the cause of this patient's case was unknown, atraumatic splenic rupture has been associated with a variety of infectious diseases and demonstrates some risks the active duty military population may face while on deployment. Having an awareness of these pathogens and their role in splenic rupture, clinicians caring for military personnel must be prepared to recognize and treat this potentially fatal complication.</p
