    Assessment of infection probability indices for airborne diseases in confined spaces: combination of CFD and analytical modelling

    The paper presents a framework for probabilistic assessment of likelihood of infection from airborne diseases in confined spaces which are continuously occupied for relatively long periods (e.g., school classrooms). The proposed approach is based on a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) pre-calculations and analytical post-processing, to define relevant indices of infection probability. The practical applicability of the method is demonstrated through a case study, where different ventilation scenarios are considered for a school classroom. Corresponding infection probability indices are determined globally for the group of occupants. Furthermore, since the method does not rely on the well-mixing assumption, local probability indices are determined for each occupied location. The obtained results confirm the intuition that an increase of ventilation and/or air filtration reduces the overall likelihood of infection, though the observed positive effect is not uniform within the space. The presented methodology can also be considered as complementary to simpler approaches

    Sexual dimorphism in tuberculosis incidence: children cases compared to adult cases in Tuscany from 1997 to 2011.

    BackgroundIn most countries, men seem to be more susceptible to tuberculosis (TB) than women, but only few studies have investigated the reasons of this gender incidence difference. The effect of sexual hormones on immunity is possible.MethodsData from children and adults, living in Tuscany, hospitalized for TB in all the thirty-one regional hospitals from January 1st 1997 to December 31st 2011, were analyzed using the International Classification of Disease, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification.ResultsDuring the study period, 10,744 patients were hospitalized with TB diagnosis, precisely 279 (2.6%) children [0-14 years], 205 (1.9%) adolescents [15-18 years] and 10,260 (95.5%) adults [≥ 18 years]. The male population ranged from 249 patients (51.4%) in children and adolescents, to 6,253 (60.9%) in adults. Pulmonary TB was the most common form both in children and adults. Men were more likely than women to have pulmonary TB after puberty, while no significant differences were found between males and females in the hospitalized children. The male gender also resulted the most affected for the extra-pulmonary disease sites, excluding the lymphatic system, during the reproductive age.ConclusionsOur findings suggest a possible role of sexual hormones in the development of TB. No significant male-female difference was found in TB incidence among children, while a sex ratio significantly different from 1:1 emerged among reproductive age classes. An increased incidence difference also persisted in older men, suggesting that male-biased risk factors could influence TB progression. Some limitations of the study are the sample size, the method of discharge diagnosis which could be deficient in accuracy in some cases, the increasing number of immigrants and the lack of possible individual risk factors (smoke and alcohol). Further studies are needed to investigate the possible hormone-driven immune mechanisms determining the sexual dimorphism in TB

    Real-time marker-less multi-person 3D pose estimation in RGB-Depth camera networks

    This paper proposes a novel system to estimate and track the 3D poses of multiple persons in calibrated RGB-Depth camera networks. The multi-view 3D pose of each person is computed by a central node which receives the single-view outcomes from each camera of the network. Each single-view outcome is computed by using a CNN for 2D pose estimation and extending the resulting skeletons to 3D by means of the sensor depth. The proposed system is marker-less, multi-person, independent of background and does not make any assumption on people appearance and initial pose. The system provides real-time outcomes, thus being perfectly suited for applications requiring user interaction. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this work with respect to a baseline multi-view approach in different scenarios.     COVID-19 lockdown: The relationship between trait impulsivity and addictive behaviors in a large representative sample of Italian adults

    open9noBackground: The importance of trait impulsivity in development, continuation and escalation of addictive behaviors has long been recognized. Methods: A cross-sectional population-based survey was conducted during the COVID-19 lockdown on 6003 Italian adults aged 18–74 years, representative of the Italian general population, to investigate the relationship between impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale – BIS) and selected addictive behaviors (gambling habits, smoking status, cannabis use, average alcohol daily use). Results: A statistically significant relationship was found between motor impulsivity and starting/increasing drinking and increasing gambling (high vs. low motor impulsivity: multivariate odds ratio, OR=3.12; 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.45–6.74; p for trend=0.004 for start and OR=1.53; 95% CI: 1.26–1.86; p for trend<0.001 for increase drinking, respectively; OR=2.09; 95% CI: 1.41–3.12; p for trend<0.001 for increasing gambling). Limitations: Potential information and recall bias. The necessity to limit the length of the questionnaire not to reduce the quality of the answers of study participants. Conclusions: The multifaceted nature of impulsivity, potentially either cause or effect, hampers the understanding of its proper role in addictive behaviors.     Floristic and forest inventory of Santa Catarina: species of evergreen rainforest.

    O presente trabalho objetivou apresentar a lista de espécies da floresta pluvial subtropical (Floresta Ombrófila Densa) em Santa Catarina, com base em 202 unidades amostrais implantadas pelo Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina para estudo do componente arbóreo-arbustivo e da regeneração, além de coletas florísticas externas às unidades amostrais. Foram registradas 1.473espécies, 19,0% das espécies citadas para esta tipologia florestal no Brasil, dentre estas três gimnospermas e 1.470 angiospermas. As famílias mais ricas em espécies foram: Orchidaceae (143 espécies), Myrtaceae (142), Asteraceae (98), Melastomataceae (86), Fabaceae (78), Rubiaceae (65), Solanaceae (61), Bromeliaceae (57), Piperaceae (56) e Lauraceae (52). Entre as espécies registradas, oito constam na Lista Oficial das Espécies da Flora Brasileira Ameaçadas de Extinção: Aechmea blumenavii, Araucaria angustifolia, Billbergia alfonsijoannis, Euterpe edulis, Heliconia farinosa, Ocotea catharinensis, O. odorifera e O. porosa

    Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina: espécies da Floresta Estacional Decidual.

    O presente trabalho visou apresentar e analisar a flora da Floresta Estacional Decidual em Santa Catarina, Brasil, tendo como fonte de dados os levantamentos realizados durante o Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina. Foram avaliadas as espécies de indivíduos lenhosos de 79 unidades amostrais de 4.000 m². Foram feitas coletas extras de indivíduos férteis, no entorno e nas unidades amostrais, das demais formas de vida. Este esforço amostral registrou 420 espécies, abrangendo 90 famílias e 275 gêneros. Nas unidades amostrais, registrou-se 233 espécies, sendo 204 com diâmetro na altura do peito (DAP) ? 10 cm e 162 com diâmetro na altura do peito DAP ? 10 cm e altura ? 1,50 m, portanto com espécies em comuns. A coleta de material extra registrou 332 angiospermas e uma gimnosperma (Araucaria angustifolia), demonstrando a importância de coletas externas às áreas previamente delimitadas. Entre as ameaçadas de extinção foram registradas Ocotea odorifera e Araucaria angustifolia

    (Inventário de Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. em Santa Catarina). A intensa exploração comercial de Dicksonia sellowiana a deixaram na categoria de ameaçada de extinção, sendo incluída na lista brasileira de espécies da flora ameaçada de extinção. Por isso, o presente trabalho visa apresentar o estudo da distribuição das populações de D. sellowiana para apontar os locais de maior ocorrência da espécie em Santa Catarina, e avaliar a relação da densidade populacional com fatores ambientais, como altitude e clima. Foram instaladas 225 unidades amostrais, com 4.000 m2 nas regiões do planalto e oeste catarinense, baseadas na grade de 10 km x 10 km conforme procedimento do Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina. Nestas 225 unidades amostrais, D. sellowiana foi encontrada em 94, com variação de um a 391 indivíduos. A grande densidade da espécie em áreas mais elevadas (superiores a 1.000 m) está relacionada com os dados climáticos que influenciam a população diretamente, apontados pelo Critério de Informação de Akaike corrigido, ou seja, a altitude e a variação de temperatura que ela provoca. Observou-se também, que a espécie apresenta maior concentração da população nos menores intervalos de altura e diâmetro, chegando a elevadas densidades com até 977 indivíduos/ha em algumas áreas. As informações obtidas pelo inventário sobre esta espécie possibilitam indicar medidas de conservação para a espécie, como área a serem conservadas e apoio a produtores rurais

    Multivariate Analysis Applied to Forestry Agricultural Sciences: The Model-Directed Study

    This is a literature review that aimed to find articles that exemplify and describe the use of multivariate analysis in different fields of Forest Agricultural Sciences, considering effective practices using multivariate statistical techniques for the simultaneous processing of data. For data collection were selected for the meta-analysis of 70 technical articles of which 54 were employed in the study directed to the use of multivariate techniques applied in the areas of agricultural sciences. The results showed thatstudies directed to certain areas within the Forest Agricultural Sciences exhibit some regularity in the use of multivariate analysis, and most application analyzes were more usual as the Cluster Analysis (AA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Thus the use of multivariate analysis studies and evaluations of experiments in Agricultural Sciences proved to great value to allow greater clarity and better interpretation of dealing with complex phenomena

    Electronic cigarette use in 12 European countries. Results from the TackSHS survey.

    BACKGROUND: Limited data on electronic cigarette prevalence, patterns and settings of use are available from several European countries. METHODS: Within the TackSHS project, a face-to-face survey was conducted in 2017-2018 in 12 European countries (Bulgaria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain). Overall, 11,876 participants, representative of the population aged ≥15 years in each country, provided information on electronic cigarette. RESULTS: 2.4% (95% confidence interval, CI: 2.2-2.7) of the subjects (2.5% among men and 2.4% among women; 0.4% among never, 4.4% among current- and 6.5% among ex-smokers) reported current use of electronic cigarette, ranging from 0.6% in Spain to 7.2% in England. Of the 272 electronic cigarette users, 52.6% were dual users (i.e., users of both electronic and conventional cigarettes) and 58.8% used liquids with nicotine. In all, 65.1% reported using electronic cigarette in at least one indoor setting where smoking is forbidden, in particular in workplaces (34.9%), and bars and restaurants (41.5%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that electronic cigarette use was lower among older individuals (p for trend <0.001) and higher among individuals with high level of education (p for trend 0.040). Participants from countries with higher tobacco cigarette prices more frequently reported electronic cigarette use (odds ratio 3.62; 95% CI: 1.80-7.30). CONCLUSIONS: Considering the whole adult population of these 12 European countries, more than 8.3 million people use electronic cigarettes. The majority of users also smoked conventional cigarettes, used electronic cigarettes with nicotine and consumed electronic cigarettes in smoke-free indoor areas
