Solving the kilo-second QPO problem of the intermediate polar GK Persei

We detect the likely optical counterpart to previously reported X-ray QPOs in spectrophotometry of the intermediate polar GK Persei during the 1996 dwarf nova outburst. The characteristic timescales range between 4000--6000 s. Although the QPOs are an order of magnitude longer than those detected in the other dwarf novae we show that a new QPO model is not required to explain the long timescale observed. We demonstrate that the observations are consistent with oscillations being the result of normal-timescale QPOs beating with the spin period of the white dwarf. We determine the spectral class of the companion to be consistent with its quiescent classification and find no significant evidence for irradiation over its inner face. We detect the white dwarf spin period in line fluxes, V/R ratios and Doppler-broadened emission profiles.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

Lost Boys and Girls: Navigating Experience and Identity during Operation Pedro Pan

Over 14,000 unaccompanied children came from Cuba to the United States during Operation Pedro Pan. Once they arrived they were faced with an entirely new living situation and were forced to adapt. One of the remaining similarities to their Cuban home was the Catholic Church. The Church played a significant role in shaping these children’s fluid concept of their ethnic, national, and religious identities. Previous scholarship has not addressed the role of the Church in the program or the issue of the fluidity of identity among these children. This study builds on the existing scholarship and aims to fill in a missing piece of the historical memory of Operation Pedro Pan and its participants

One significant character in French and Francophone literature aimed at young girls is completely absent from English language culture.  The books and other media about crime fighting schoolgirl Françoise Dupont / Fantômette have not been translated into English and are very sparsely represented in American and British libraries.  She is ubiquitous enough in Francophone culture to be referred to without any explanation (much as English publications would reference a detective named Nancy or Hermione the witch).  Who is this heroine and why have we never heard of her?   DOI: 10.1353/jeu.2020.001

Determining the Optimum Strategy of Techniques from the Municipal Solid Waste Management Hierarchy to Maximize Social Value

Environmental managers must make difficult decisions regarding how to manage solid waste generation and disposal. The primary waste management alternatives are source reduction, recycling, composting, incineration, and landfilling often, waste management policies are based entirely on technical considerations and ignore that actual disposal practices depend on individuals\u27 attitudes and behaviors. This research formulated a decision analysis model that incorporates social value measures to determine the waste management strategy that maximizes the individuals\u27 willingness to participate. The social values that are important and that were considered in the decision support model to assist with making decisions about solid waste management were convenience, feeling good about reducing waste, feeling good about leaving a good environment for future generations, and the value of recreation programs that can be provided with profit from a recycling program
