Ferromagnetism in GaN: Gd: A density functional theory study
First principle calculations of the electronic structure and magnetic interaction of GaN:Gd have been performed within the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) of the density functional theory (DFT) with the on-site Coulomb energy U taken into account (also referred to as GGA+U). The ferromagnetic p-d coupling is found to be over two orders of magnitude larger than the s-d exchange coupling. The experimental colossal magnetic moments and room temperature ferromagnetism in GaN:Gd reported recently are explained by the interaction of Gd 4f spins via p-d coupling involving holes introduced by intrinsic defects such as Ga vacancies
Probing the helical content of growth hormone-releasing factor analogs using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry
AbstractA series of growth hormone-releasing factor analogs have been studied by both circular dichroism and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI/MS). The peptides are 32 residues long and are known to adopt a random-coil structure in aqueous solution but become increasing helical as the proportion of organic solvent is increased. Deuterium exchange was observed as an increase in mass of the peptide, as measured by ESI/MS. Rates of exchange were measured and half-lives calculated for analogs containing amino acid substitutions designed to promote or discourage helix formation. Exchange was slower in peptides that are helical (as shown by circular dichroism) than in randomly coiled peptides. Solution conditions that favor helix formation also produced slower exchange rates. These studies suggest that ESI/MS can provide date about the extent and stability of helix formation

A Historical Review and Resource Guide to the Scholarship of Teaching and Training in Psychology and Law and Forensic Psychology
The field of psychology and law, including forensic psychology, is an exciting concentration of research activity and student training and has grown rapidly, but to what extent have teaching and training efforts in the field been systematically catalogued and evaluated? We conducted a historical review and content analysis of the American and Canadian literature on the scholarship of teaching and training in the field. This review catalogs (a) information related to the development of training and teaching, (b) descriptions of programs and courses at various levels, and (c) articles on teaching resources or techniques in this field. We hope it serves as a useful guide to the literature resources for those in the field and a catalyst for future interest in this area of scholarship, especially for future evaluations of teaching and training. Modeling and High-Resolution-Imaging Studies of Water-Content Profiles in a Polymer-Electrolyte-Fuel-Cell Membrane-Electrode Assembly
Water-content profiles across the membrane electrode assembly of a polymer-electrolyte fuel cell were measured using high-resolution neutron imaging and compared to mathematical-modeling predictions. It was found that the membrane held considerably more water than the other membrane-electrode constituents (catalyst layers, microporous layers, and macroporous gas-diffusion layers) at low temperatures, 40 and 60 C. The water content in the membrane and the assembly decreased drastically at 80 C where vapor transport and a heat-pipe effect began to dominate the water removal from the membrane-electrode assembly. In the regimes where vapor transport was significant, the through-plane water-content profile skewed towards the cathode. Similar trends were observed as the relative humidity of the inlet gases was lowered. This combined experimental and modeling approach has been beneficial in rationalizing the results of each and given insight into future directions for new experimental work and refinements to currently available models
