Vowel duration, compression and lengthening in stressed syllables in Italian

    Get PDF
The focus of this study is on temporal organization, specifically of vowel duration, in stressed syllables in (standard) Italian. We investigate possible compression effects on the duration of stressed vowels according to wordposition (final, penult and antepenult) and syllable type (open vs. closed) in this language. Our results show shortening in some contexts, e.g. closed syllables, and antepenultimate position, but not in all tested contexts. Compression effects do not surface in a fully linear fashion, with complications arising in word-final position where competing tendencies towards lengthening and shortening are found to co-occur. We consider the implications of our results for phonological descriptions of Italian

Review of \u3ci\u3e Ordinary Life, Festival Days: Aesthetics in the Midwestern County Fair\u3c/i\u3e by Leslie Prosterman

Prosterman graphically describes and idealizes traditional midwestern life as it focuses and culminates in the county fair by connecting food production to the harvest bounty. Her account of these American festivals began as a dissertation with data gathered in 1981-82. She visited twenty-four fairs, studied six in depth and conducted more than one hundred ethnographic interviews in two states. As a cultural anthropologist, Prosterman defines the county fair and its system of thought processes as folklore intimately connected to a small group people within a community. To the student of family and community sustainability, the book supplies a rich history county fairs\u27 impact on community life

G90-960 Laws That Impact Our Lives

Laws enforced through the government\u27s role as regulator and protector have a daily impact on our lives. How Do Laws Affect Us? Laws have a daily impact on our lives--whether they relate to social services, education, housing, nutrition, food safety, consumer rights or the environment. Public policies such as legislation, resolutions, appropriations, new regulations for a current law or court decisions are used as solutions to problems expressed by the public. These actions are the result of public issues that have been debated and compromised through the policymaking process. The basic element is the process used to solve a public problem

RP443 How to Impact Public Policy for Families

    Get PDF
Societal changes impact families. Changes in families affect the dynamics of society. These changes result in development of public policies that may or may not adequately respond to family concerns. Private sector (business) policies may also compound such effects. Like government, these private sector policies may or may not respond to family concerns. This publication will focus primarily on public sector policymaking and how citizens can influence these processes for families

Performing the Lavender Menace:Negotiating Stereotypes as Lesbian Camp in Berta Freistadt’s A Fine Undertaking

Drawing upon original archival research from the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, this essay proposes an alternative mode of ‘lesbian camp’ in Berta Freistadt’s 1984 play, A Fine Undertaking. Using Notes on Camp (1966) as an initial framework, I suggest that Freistadt builds upon Sontag’s paradigm, expanding it to include a highly politicized, highly self-aware mode of camp. Negotiating both internal and external stereotypes, Freistadt subverts assumptions about “radical” lesbians and their impact on the Women’s Liberation Movement in Britain and the USA. In showing their rejection of the patriarchy to be excessive, their “coming outs” unaffected, and their feminist rhetoric merely aesthetic, Freistadt’s lesbian characters embody a sense of frivolous artifice. I suggest that the effect of such is that of reclamation. Freistadt takes the stereotypes imposed upon lesbian communities and exaggerates them, twisting and expanding their definitions until they become nothing more than absurd substitutions for reality.Utilising Freistadt’s original manuscripts as well as hand-made posters, programmes and other items shoestring theatre paraphernalia, this essay’s archival foundations reflect the very purpose of investigating Freistadt’s largely “unknown” body of work: for a theatre movement so concerned with undoing years of lesbian invisibility, it seems unfitting that so much of Britain’s lesbian theatre history is still, by and large, hidden within the depths of the archive

Coalition Sustainability: Long-Term Successes & Lessons Learned

    Get PDF
While most Cooperative Extension projects begin with worthy goals, to truly measure a project\u27s long-term success, it is necessary to assess the project\u27s impact over time. The purpose of this article is to analyze the sustainability and continued impact of a USDA funded youth-at-risk project coalition building project 10 years after the onset of the initial project and 5 years after cessation of funding. The lessons learned through the work of the coalitions involved in this project can provide insight into the planning and implementation of other projects and strategies that can be used to ensure long-term project sustainability

An analysis of the local causes and effects of AGN produced jets in galaxies at z~2-3.5

    Get PDF
We investigate the radio, X-Ray and far-infrared properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with strong radio jets at 2.2 0 and average of 0.41±0.21, higher than the average for AGN without jets of 0.14±0.47. We conclude that the presence of jets may inhibit the AGN’s current activity, due to the large size and luminosity of jets, the energy and matter distributions are altered in such a way that the galaxy’s SFR and BHAR are impacted noticeably, agreeing with previous research and findings
