HOUSEHOLD FOOD SECURITY IN THE UNITED STATES, 2003
Eighty-nine percent of American households were food secure throughout the entire year in 2003, meaning that they had access, at all times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members. The remaining households were food insecure at least some time during that year. The prevalence of food insecurity, 11.2 percent of households, was not statistically different from the 11.1 percent observed in 2002. The prevalence of food insecurity with hunger was unchanged at 3.5 percent. This report, based on data from the December 2003 food security survey, provides the most recent statistics on the food security of U.S. households, as well as on how much they spent for food and the extent to which food-insecure households participated in Federal and community food assistance programs. Survey responses indicate that the typical food-secure household in the U.S. spent 34 percent more on food than the typical food-insecure household of the same size and household composition. The rest were food insecure at least some time during the year, meaning they did not always have access to enough food for active, healthy lives for all household members because they lacked sufficient money or other resources for food. The prevalence of food insecurity rose from 10.1 percent in 1999 to 10.7 percent in 2001, and the prevalence of food insecurity with hunger rose from 3.0 percent to 3.3 percent during the same period. This report, based on data from the December 2001 food security survey, provides the most recent statistics on the food security of U.S. households, as well as on how much they spent for food and the extent to which food-insecure households participated in Federal and community food assistance programs. Survey responses indicate that the typical food-secure household in the United States spent 32 percent more than the typical food-insecure household of the same size and household composition. About one-half of all food-insecure households participated in one or more of the three largest Federal food assistance programs during the month prior to the survey. An estimated 85.5 percent of American households were food secure throughout the entire year in 2010, meaning that they had access at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members. The remaining households (14.5 percent) were food insecure at least some time during the year, including 5.4 percent with very low food security—meaning that the food intake of one or more household members was reduced and their eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year because the household lacked money and other resources for food. The prevalence rate of very low food security declined from 5.7 percent in 2009, while the change in food insecurity overall (from 14.7 percent in 2009) was not statistically significant. The typical food-secure household spent 27 percent more on food than the typical food-insecure household of the same size and household composition. A Complete Pathway Model for Lipid A Biosynthesis in Escherichia coli
Lipid A is a highly conserved component of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), itself a major component
of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Lipid A is essential to cells and
elicits a strong immune response from humans and other animals. We developed a quantitative
model of the nine enzyme-catalyzed steps ofEscherichia colilipid A biosynthesis,
drawing parameters from the experimental literature. This model accounts for biosynthesis
regulation, which occurs through regulated degradation of the LpxC and WaaA (also called
KdtA) enzymes. The LpxC degradation signal appears to arise from the lipid A disaccharide
concentration, which we deduced from prior results, model results, and new LpxK overexpression
results. The model agrees reasonably well with many experimental findings, including
the lipid A production rate, the behaviors of mutants with defective LpxA enzymes,
correlations between LpxC half-lives and cell generation times, and the effects of LpxK
overexpression on LpxC concentrations. Its predictions also differ from some experimental
results, which suggest modifications to the current understanding of the lipid A pathway,
such as the possibility that LpxD can replace LpxA and that there may be metabolic
channeling between LpxH and LpxB. The model shows that WaaA regulation may serve to
regulate the lipid A production rate when the 3-deoxy-D-manno-oct-2-ulosonic acid (KDO)
concentration is low and/or to control the number of KDO residues that get attached to lipid
A. Computation of flux control coefficients showed that LpxC is the rate-limiting enzyme if
pathway regulation is ignored, but that LpxK is the rate-limiting enzyme if pathway regulation
is present, as it is in real cells. Control also shifts to other enzymes if the pathway substrate
concentrations are not in excess. Based on these results, we suggest that LpxK may
be a much better drug target than LpxC, which has been pursued most often
