    Collaborative tools for the LHC: update on recent activities

    "I report on current activities in the domain of Collaborative Tools, focusing on development for the LHC collaborations [1] and HENP (High Energy and Nuclear Physics), in general, including audio and video conferencing, web archiving, and secure collaborative environments. This note addresses the follow-up to the LCG RTAG 12 Final Report [2] (presented at CHEP 2006 [3]), including formation of the RCTF (Remote Collaboration Task Force) to steer planning and development, installation of prototype facilities at CERN, and funding scenarios.     A Behavioral Model of Cyclical Dieting

    This paper presents a behavioral economics model with bounded rationality to describe an individualÂĄÂŻs food consumption choices that lead to weight gain and dieting. Using a physiological relationship determining calories needed to maintain weight, we simulate the food consumption choices of a representative female over a 30 year period. Results show that a diet will reduce weight only temporarily. Recurrence of weight gain leads to cyclical dieting, which reduces the trend rate of weight increase.     The International Particle Physics Outreach Group: Engaging the world with science

    The International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG) is a network of scientists, science educators, and communication specialists working across the globe in informal science education and public engagement for particle physics. The primary methodology adopted by IPPOG includes the direct participation of scientists active in current research with education and communication specialists to effectively develop and share best practices in outreach. IPPOG member activities include the International Particle Physics Masterclass programme, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Worldwide Data Day, International Muon Week, and International Cosmic Day organisation, and participation in activities ranging from public talks, festivals, exhibitions, teacher training, student competitions, and open days at local institutes. These independent activities, often carried out in a variety of languages to public with a variety of backgrounds, all serve to gain the public trust and improve worldwide understanding and support of science. We present our vision of IPPOG as a strategic pillar of particle physics, fundamental research, and evidence-based decision-making around the world.     ATLAS Live : Collaborative Information Streams

    I report on a pilot project launched in 2010 focusing on facilitating communication and information exchange within the ATLAS Collaboration, through the combination of digital signage software and webcasting. The project, called ATLAS Live , implements video streams of information, ranging from detailed detector and data status to educational and outreach material. The content, including text, images, video and audio, is collected, visualised and scheduled using digital signage software. The system is robust and flexible, utilizing scripts to input data from remote sources, such as the CERN Document Server, Indico, or any available URL, and to integrate these sources into professional-quality streams, including text scrolling, transition effects, inter and intra-screen divisibility. Information is published via the encoding and webcasting of standard video streams, viewable on all common platforms, using a web browser or other common video tool.     Can A Rational Choice Framework Make Sense of Anorexia Nervosa?

    Can a rational choice modeling framework help broaden our understanding of anorexia nervosa? This question is interesting because anorexia nervosa is a serious health concern, and because of the following issue: could a rational choice approach shed useful light on a condition which appears to involve "choosing" to be ill? We present a model of weight choice and dieting applicable to anorexia nervosa, and the sometimes-associated purging behavior. We also present empirical evidence about factors possibly contributing to anorexia nervosa. We offer this analysis as a consciousness-raising way of thinking about the condition.

    Empirical Study of Carbon Dioxide Released to the Atmosphere during Commercial Red Grape Fermentation

    Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a pollutant (greenhouse gas) that is emitted during winemaking but not currently regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. While winery CO2 emissions have been modeled, they have never been measured continuously or confirmed during a commercial fermentation. As international interest increases in greenhouse gases, it is important to know the amount of CO2 release and the determining factors; yeast strain, temperature, and dissolved CO2 are potentially important parameters. The study was designed to quantify emissions and test a theoretical model for atmospheric release of CO2 during alcoholic fermentation in a commercial winery. Gas release was channeled through a manifold system with an in-line mass flow meter calibrated for CO2, providing real-time and integrated measurement of atmospheric emission. Intermittent use of a hot-wire anemometer was used as a check on the mass-flow measurements. Initial results indicate that integrated mass of CO2 release is dependent on total Brix decrease and not duration of fermentation, consistent with the Williams and Boulton model. However, the time course of release and the shape of the release curves differed substantially among ferments and were primarily dependent on the length of active fermentation
