Double Beta Decay
The motivation, present status, and future plans of the search for the
neutrinoless double beta decay are reviewed. It is argued that, motivated by
the recent observations of neutrino oscillations, there is a reasonable hope
that neutrinoless double beta decay corresponding to the neutrino mass scale
suggested by oscillations, of about 50 meV, actually exists. The
challenges to achieve the sensitivity corresponding to this mass scale, and
plans to overcome them, are described.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures included, Submitted to Annu. Rev. Nucl. Part.

Ge Detectors and : The Search for Double Beta Decay with Germanium Detectors: Past, Present and Future
High Purity Germanium Detectors have excellent energy resolution; the best
among the technologies used in double beta decay. Since neutrino-less double
beta decay hinges on the search for a rare peak upon a background continuum,
this strength has enabled the technology to consistently provide leading
results. The Ge crystals at the heart of these experiments are very pure; they
have no measurable U or Th contamination. The added efforts to reduce the
background associated with electronics, cryogenic cooling, and shielding have
been very successful, leading to the longevity of productivity. The first
experiment published in 1967 by the Milan group of Fiorini, established the
benchmark half-life limit yr. More recently, the \MJ\ and
GERDA collaborations have developed new detector technologies that optimize the
pulse waveform analysis. As a result, the GERDA collaboration refuted the claim
of observation with a revolutionary approach to shielding by immersing the
detectors directly in radio-pure liquid argon. In 2018, the \MJ\ collaboration,
using a classic vacuum cryostat and high-Z shielding, achieved a background
level near that of GERDA by developing very pure materials for use nearby the
detectors. Together, GERDA and \MJ\ have provided limits approaching
yr. In this article, we elaborate on the historical use of Ge detectors for
double beta decay addressing the strengths and weaknesses. We also summarize
the status and future as many \MJ\ and GERDA collaborators have joined with
scientists from other efforts to give birth to the LEGEND collaboration. LEGEND
will exploit the best features of both experiments to extend the half-life
limit beyond yr with a ton-scale experiment.Comment: Invited submission to Frontiers in Physic
Context sensitive optical character recognition using neural networks and hidden Markov models
This thesis investigates a method for using contextual information in text recognition. This is based on the premise that, while reading, humans recognize words with missing or garbled characters by examining the surrounding characters and then selecting the appropriate character. The correct character is chosen based on an inherent knowledge of the language and spelling techniques. We can then model this statistically. The approach taken by this Thesis is to combine feature extraction techniques, Neural Networks and Hidden Markov Modeling. This method of character recognition involves a three step process: pixel image preprocessing, neural network classification and context interpretation. Pixel image preprocessing applies a feature extraction algorithm to original bit mapped images, which produces a feature vector for the original images which are input into a neural network. The neural network performs the initial classification of the characters by producing ten weights, one for each character. The magnitude of the weight is translated into the confidence the network has in each of the choices. The greater the magnitude and separation, the more confident the neural network is of a given choice. The output of the neural network is the input for a context interpreter. The context interpreter uses Hidden Markov Modeling (HMM) techniques to determine the most probable classification for all characters based on the characters that precede that character and character pair statistics. The HMMs are built using an a priori knowledge of the language: a statistical description of the probabilities of digrams. Experimentation and verification of this method combines the development and use of a preprocessor program, a Cascade Correlation Neural Network and a HMM context interpreter program. Results from these experiments show the neural network successfully classified 88.2 percent of the characters. Expanding this to the word level, 63 percent of the words were correctly identified. Adding the Hidden Markov Modeling improved the word recognition to 82.9 percent
Henry James, Sr. and the American experience.
In this biography, I have endeavored to discuss Henry James, Sr.'s career, his responses to the transformations--both social and personal--which marked his age and touched his life. I have tried to analyze the ideas that comprised the system he labeled "society the redeemed form of man, " to discuss his impact on his family, and to discern the similarities and differences between his own experiences and those of other Americans. The first two chapters focus on the development of James' life and the progression of his works, the third chapter concentrates on his ideas and the final two chapters depict his familial relationships and his role as a symbolic American.Henry James, Sr.'s experiences were those of incessant transformations. During his lifetime, which spanned the major portion of the nineteenth century, he witnessed the immense changes that affected American society, underwent an evolution in his own life from a young man of scholarly and theological ambitions to a crusader for a "redeemed" society, and observed the development of his two eldest sons, William and Henry, from precocious infants and inquisitive adolescents to writers of international repute
A comparative analysis of two different analysers used for determination of the Total Organic Carbon in pharmaceutical grade water
Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is a routine test for pharmaceutical grade water. Several manufacturers supply equipment of different designs but there is a dearth of published, peer-reviewed, information evaluating the various analysers. In this study, we compared two TOC analysers, both validated to the same pharmacopoeial criteria, but with different oxidation and detection methods. The results in this paper show that there were no unexplained out-of-specification results and that both analysers operated equivalently in terms of the pharmacopoeial 500ppb pass/fail limits. However, significant differences between the TOC levels reported from paired samples were observed, two paired samples recorded a pass/fail conflict (albeit flagged with an overestimation warning), as well as differences in analyser responses between spiked samples that contained low levels of nitro- and chloro-carbon compounds
