Compact HI clouds from the GALFA-HI survey
The Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey is mapping the
entire Arecibo sky at 21-cm, over a velocity range of -700 to +700 km/s (LSR),
at a velocity resolution of 0.18 km/s and a spatial resolution of 3.5 arcmin.
The unprecedented resolution and sensitivity of the GALFA-HI survey have
resulted in the detection of numerous isolated, very compact HI clouds at low
Galactic velocities, which are distinctly separated from the HI disk emission.
In the limited area of ~4600 deg surveyed so far, we have detected 96 of
such compact clouds. The detected clouds are cold with a median T
(the kinetic temperature in the case in which there is no non-thermal
broadening) of 300 K. Moreover, these clouds are quite compact and faint, with
median values of 5 arcmin in angular size, 0.75 K in peak brightness
temperature, and cm in HI column density. Most of the
clouds deviate from Galactic rotation at the 20-30 km/s level, and a
significant fraction show evidence for a multiphase medium and velocity
gradients. No counterparts for these clouds were found in other wavebands. From
the modeling of spatial and velocity distributions of the whole compact cloud
population, we find that the bulk of the compact clouds are related to the
Galactic disk, and their distances are likely to be in the range of 0.1 to a
few kpc. We discuss various possible scenarios for the formation and
maintenance of this cloud population and its significance for Galactic ISM
studies.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Nutritional supplements and infection in the elderly: why do the findings conflict?
BACKGROUND: Most of the randomized placebo-controlled trials that have examined the clinical effects of multivitamin-mineral supplements on infection in the elderly have shown no significant effect. The exceptions are three such trials, all using a supplement with the same composition, and all claiming dramatic benefits: a frequently cited study published in 1992, which reported a 50% reduction in the number of days of infection (NDI), and two 2002 replication studies. Questions have been raised about the 1992 report; a second report in 2001 based on the same trial, but describing effects of the supplement on cognitive functions, has been retracted by Nutrition. The primary purpose of the present paper is to evaluate the claims about the effects of supplements on NDI in the two replication reports. METHODS: Examination of internal consistency (outcomes of statistical tests versus reported data); comparison of variability of NDI across individuals in these two reports with variability in other trials; estimation of the probability of achieving the reported close agreement with the original finding. RESULTS: The standard deviations of NDI and levels of statistical significance reported are profoundly inconsistent. The reported standard deviations of NDI are consistently below what other studies have found. The reported percent reductions in NDI agree too closely with the original study. CONCLUSION: The claims of reduced NDI in the two replication reports should be questioned, which also adds to concerns about the 1992 study. It follows that there is currently no trustworthy evidence from randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials that favors the use of vitamin-mineral supplements to reduce infection in the elderly
Clinically Actionable Hypercholesterolemia and Hypertriglyceridemia in Children with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
OBJECTIVE:
To determine the percentage of children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in whom intervention for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or triglycerides was indicated based on National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines.
STUDY DESIGN:
This multicenter, longitudinal cohort study included children with NAFLD enrolled in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network. Fasting lipid profiles were obtained at diagnosis. Standardized dietary recommendations were provided. After 1 year, lipid profiles were repeated and interpreted according to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Expert Panel on Integrated Guidelines for Cardiovascular Health and Risk Reduction. Main outcomes were meeting criteria for clinically actionable dyslipidemia at baseline, and either achieving lipid goal at follow-up or meeting criteria for ongoing intervention.
RESULTS:
There were 585 participants, with a mean age of 12.8 years. The prevalence of children warranting intervention for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol at baseline was 14%. After 1 year of recommended dietary changes, 51% achieved goal low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, 27% qualified for enhanced dietary and lifestyle modifications, and 22% met criteria for pharmacologic intervention. Elevated triglycerides were more prevalent, with 51% meeting criteria for intervention. At 1 year, 25% achieved goal triglycerides with diet and lifestyle changes, 38% met criteria for advanced dietary modifications, and 37% qualified for antihyperlipidemic medications.
CONCLUSIONS:
More than one-half of children with NAFLD met intervention thresholds for dyslipidemia. Based on the burden of clinically relevant dyslipidemia, lipid screening in children with NAFLD is warranted. Clinicians caring for children with NAFLD should be familiar with lipid management
Programa de intervención en representaciones de creatividad y motivación académica de adolescentes
Creativity and its promotion are widespread concerns in education. However, few efforts have been made to implement
intervention programs designed to promote creativity and other related aspects (e.g., academic motivation). The Future Problem Solving
Program International (FPSPI), aimed for training creativity representations and creative problem solving skills in young people, has
been one of the most implemented programs. This intervention’s materials and activities were adapted for Portuguese students, and
a longitudinal study was conducted. The program was implemented during four months, in weekly sessions, by thirteen teachers.
Teachers received previous training for the program and during the program’s implementation. Intervention participants included
77 Basic and Secondary Education students, and control participants included 78 equivalent students. Pretest-posttest measures of
academic motivation and creativity representations were collected. Results suggest a significant increase, in the intervention group,
in motivation and the appropriate representations of creativity. Practical implications and future research perspectives are presented.A criatividade e sua promoção geram grande preocupação em educação. Contudo, poucos esforços têm existido para

Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in Children With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Background & aimsType 2 diabetes (T2D) is a growing problem in children. Children with NAFLD are at potentially high risk for developing T2D; however, the incidence of T2D in this population is unknown. This study aimed to determine the incidence of T2D in children with NAFLD and identify associated risk factors.MethodsChildren with NAFLD enrolled in the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network were followed longitudinally. Incidence of T2D was determined by using clinical history and fasting laboratory values. Cumulative incidence curves were developed for time to T2D. A Cox regression multivariable model was constructed using best subsets Akaike's Information Criteria selection.ResultsThis study included 892 children with NAFLD and with a mean age of 12.8 years (2.7) followed for 3.8 years (2.3) with a total 3234 person-years at risk. The incidence rate of T2D was 3000 new cases per 100,000 person-years at risk. At baseline, 63 children had T2D, and during follow-up, an additional 97 children developed incident T2D, resulting in a period prevalence of 16.8%. Incident T2D was significantly higher in females versus males (hazard ratio [HR], 1.8 [1.0-2.8]), associated with BMI z-score (HR, 1.8 [1.0-3.0]), and more severe liver histology including steatosis grade (HR, 1.3 [1.0-1.7]), and fibrosis stage (HR, 1.3 [1.0-1.5]).ConclusionsChildren with NAFLD are at high risk for existing and incident T2D. In addition to known risk factors for T2D (female and BMI z-score), severity of liver histology at the time of NAFLD diagnosis was independently associated with T2D development. Targeted strategies to prevent T2D in children with NAFLD are needed

ARCHAEOMAGNETIC SECULAR VARIATION OF DIRECTION AND PALEOINTENSITY IN THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST.
Oriented archaeomagnetic samples were collected from 158 in situ features at 33 sites in the southwestern U.S. Seventy-three independently dated features were used for analysis of secular variation. A moving-window smoothing technique with outlier rejection was developed to objectively compute a virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) path. Weighted Fisher statistics, accounting for errors in both dating and archaeomagnetic direction, were used to compute a mean VGP and standard error (A95) within each window of time. The VGP moves from 86°N, 83°E at A.D. 750 to 74°N, 192°E at A.D. 1075, and then to 85°N, 236°E at A.D. 1425. Secular variation of the VGP ranges from .00423-.350°/yr with a median of .0359°/yr. The A95s for the VGP curve range from 1.33-5.28°. Archaeomagnetic declinations and inclinations in Tucson range from 346-359°E and 47-60°. The close agreement with a similarly constructed VGP curve for Arkansas implies a small nondipole field in North America between A.D. 1150-1450. The VGP curve is significantly different from that of R. L. DuBois. Three case histories of archaeomagnetic dating suggest the validity of the new curve. The Thellier-Thellier paleointensity experiment was performed on 187 specimens from 77 potsherds. A significant magnetic fabric anisotropy, typically 30%, was found. Using an easy-plane model of magnetization, the anisotropy correction systematically increased the paleointensities by 5%. Paleointensities were interpreted for 127 samples from 54 sherds. All ceramics were independently dated and used along with other results to construct a virtual axial dipole moment (VADM) curve. A moving-window smoother using weighted statistics within each interval of time and incorporating outlier analysis was used. The Southwestern VADM at 300 B.C. is 14 x 10('22)Am('2), decreases to 8.6 x 10²²Am² at A.D. 800, and increases to 12.9 x 10²²Am² at A.D. 1500. Paleointensities from Hohokam ceramics compare favorably with paleointensities from other Southwestern ceramics, regardless of whether the long Hohokam chronology beginning at 300 B.C. or the short chronology beginning at A.D. 500 are used. There is also reasonable agreement between the Southwest and Mesoamerican VADM records
