Cancellation of Global Anomalies in Spontaneously Broken Gauge Theories
We discuss the generalization to global gauge anomalies of the familiar
procedure for the cancellation of local gauge anomalies in effective theories
of spontaneously broken symmetries. We illustrate this mechanism in a recently

Limb Spicules from the Ground and from Space
We amassed statistics for quiet-sun chromosphere spicules at the limb using
ground-based observations from the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope on La Palma and
simultaneously from NASA's Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE)
spacecraft. The observations were obtained in July 2006. With the 0.2 arcsecond
resolution obtained after maximizing the ground-based resolution with the
Multi-Object Multi-Frame Blind Deconvolution (MOMFBD) program, we obtained
specific statistics for sizes and motions of over two dozen individual
spicules, based on movies compiled at 50-second cadence for the series of five
wavelengths observed in a very narrow band at H-alpha, on-band and in the red
and blue wings at 0.035 nm and 0.070 nm (10 s at each wavelength) using the
SOUP filter, and had simultaneous observations in the 160 nm EUV continuum from
TRACE. The MOMFBD restoration also automatically aligned the images,
facilitating the making of Dopplergrams at each off-band pair. We studied 40
H-alpha spicules, and 14 EUV spicules that overlapped H-alpha spicules; we
found that their dynamical and morphological properties fit into the framework
of several previous studies. From a preliminary comparison with spicule
theories, our observations are consistent with a reconnection mechanism for
spicule generation, and with UV spicules being a sheath region surrounding the
H-alpha spicules
Origins of the Ambient Solar Wind: Implications for Space Weather
The Sun's outer atmosphere is heated to temperatures of millions of degrees,
and solar plasma flows out into interplanetary space at supersonic speeds. This
paper reviews our current understanding of these interrelated problems: coronal
heating and the acceleration of the ambient solar wind. We also discuss where
the community stands in its ability to forecast how variations in the solar
wind (i.e., fast and slow wind streams) impact the Earth. Although the last few
decades have seen significant progress in observations and modeling, we still
do not have a complete understanding of the relevant physical processes, nor do
we have a quantitatively precise census of which coronal structures contribute
to specific types of solar wind. Fast streams are known to be connected to the
central regions of large coronal holes. Slow streams, however, appear to come
from a wide range of sources, including streamers, pseudostreamers, coronal
loops, active regions, and coronal hole boundaries. Complicating our
understanding even more is the fact that processes such as turbulence,
stream-stream interactions, and Coulomb collisions can make it difficult to
unambiguously map a parcel measured at 1 AU back down to its coronal source. We
also review recent progress -- in theoretical modeling, observational data
analysis, and forecasting techniques that sit at the interface between data and
theory -- that gives us hope that the above problems are indeed solvable.Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews. Special issue

Coronal Dimmings and the Early Phase of a CME Observed with STEREO and Hinode/EIS
We investigate the early phase of the 13 February 2009 coronal mass ejection
(CME). Observations with the twin STEREO spacecraft in quadrature allow us to
compare for the first time in one and the same event the temporal evolution of
coronal EUV dimmings, observed simultaneously on-disk and above the limb. We
find that these dimmings are synchronized and appear during the impulsive
acceleration phase of the CME, with the highest EUV intensity drop occurring a
few minutes after the maximum CME acceleration. During the propagation phase
two confined, bipolar dimming regions, appearing near the footpoints of a
pre-flare sigmoid structure, show an apparent migration away from the site of
the CME-associated flare. Additionally, they rotate around the 'center' of the
flare site, i.e., the configuration of the dimmings exhibits the same
'sheared-to-potential' evolution as the postflare loops. We conclude that the
motion pattern of the twin dimmings reflects not only the eruption of the flux
rope, but also the ensuing stretching of the overlying arcade. Finally, we find
that: (1) the global-scale dimmings, expanding from the source region of the
eruption, propagate with a speed similar to that of the leaving CME front; (2)
the mass loss occurs mainly during the period of strongest CME acceleration.
Two hours after the eruption Hinode/EIS observations show no substantial plasma
outflow, originating from the 'open' field twin dimming regions.Comment: accepted for publication in Solar Physic
CD4/CD8 Ratio and Cancer Risk among Adults with HIV
Background: Independent of CD4 cell count, a low CD4/CD8 ratio in people with HIV (PWH) is associated with deleterious immune senescence, activation, and inflammation, which may contribute to carcinogenesis and excess cancer risk. We examined whether low CD4/CD8 ratios predicted cancer among PWH in the United States and Canada. Methods: We examined all cancer-free PWH with 1 or more CD4/CD8 values from North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design observational cohorts with validated cancer diagnoses between 1998 and 2016. We evaluated the association between time-lagged CD4/CD8 ratio and risk of specific cancers in multivariable, time-updated Cox proportional hazard models using restricted cubic spines. Models were adjusted for age, sex, race and ethnicity, hepatitis C virus, and time-updated CD4 cell count, HIV RNA, and history of AIDS-defining illness. Results: Among 83 893 PWH, there were 5628 incident cancers, including lung cancer (n = 755), Kaposi sarcoma (n = 501), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 497), and anal cancer (n = 439). The median age at cohort entry was 43 years. The overall median 6-month lagged CD4/CD8 ratio was 0.52 (interquartile range = 0.30-0.82). Compared with a 6-month lagged CD4/CD8 of 0.80, a CD4/CD8 of 0.30 was associated with increased risk of any incident cancer (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.24 [95% confidence interval = 1.14 to 1.35]). The CD4/CD8 ratio was also inversely associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Kaposi sarcoma, lung cancer, anal cancer, and colorectal cancer in adjusted analyses (all 2-sided P <. 05). Results were similar using 12-, 18-, and 24-month lagged CD4/CD8 values. Conclusions: A low CD4/CD8 ratio up to 24 months before cancer diagnosis was independently associated with increased cancer risk in PWH and may serve as a clinical biomarker
The Origin, Early Evolution and Predictability of Solar Eruptions
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were discovered in the early 1970s when space-borne coronagraphs revealed that eruptions of plasma are ejected from the Sun. Today, it is known that the Sun produces eruptive flares, filament eruptions, coronal mass ejections and failed eruptions; all thought to be due to a release of energy stored in the coronal magnetic field during its drastic reconfiguration. This review discusses the observations and physical mechanisms behind this eruptive activity, with a view to making an assessment of the current capability of forecasting these events for space weather risk and impact mitigation. Whilst a wealth of observations exist, and detailed models have been developed, there still exists a need to draw these approaches together. In particular more realistic models are encouraged in order to asses the full range of complexity of the solar atmosphere and the criteria for which an eruption is formed. From the observational side, a more detailed understanding of the role of photospheric flows and reconnection is needed in order to identify the evolutionary path that ultimately means a magnetic structure will erupt

Spoken language outcome measures for treatment studies in Down syndrome: feasibility, practice effects, test-retest reliability, and construct validity of variables generated from expressive language sampling
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate expressive language sampling (ELS) as a procedure for generating spoken language outcome measures for treatment research in Down syndrome (DS). We addressed (a) feasibility, (b) practice effects across two short-term administrations, (c) test-retest reliability across two short-term administrations, (d) convergent and discriminant construct validity, and (e) considered comparisons across the conversation and narration contexts. Method: Participants were 107 individuals with DS between 6 and 23 years of age who presented with intellectual disability (IQ < 70). The utility of ELS procedures designed to collect samples of spoken language in conversation and narration were evaluated separately. Variables of talkativeness, vocabulary, syntax, utterance planning, and articulation quality, derived from transcripts segmented into C-units (i.e., an independent clause and its modifiers), were considered. A 4-week interval was used to assess practice effects and test-retest reliability. Standardized direct assessments and informant report measures were collected to evaluate construct validity of the ELS variables. Results: Low rates of noncompliance were observed; youth who were under 12 years of age, had phrase-level speech or less, and had a 4-year-old developmental level or less were at particular risk for experiencing difficulty completing the ELS procedures. Minimal practice effects and strong test-retest reliability across the 4-week test-retest interval was observed. The vocabulary, syntax, and speech intelligibility variables demonstrated strong convergent and discriminant validity. Although significant correlations were found between the variables derived from both the conversation and narration contexts, some differences were noted. Conclusion: The ELS procedures considered were feasible and yielded variables with adequate psychometric properties for most individuals with DS between 6 and 23 years old. That said, studies of outcome measures appropriate for individuals with DS with more limited spoken language skills are needed.
