Ultra-high molecular sink vacuum chamber
Double-wall vacuum chamber can be separated from the remainder of the system and pumped by ultra-clean techniques. Ultrahigh vacuum is maintained by the cryogenic effect of a cold wall and titanium chemisorption
Diffusion algorithms and data reduction routine for onsite launch predictions for the transport of Titan 3 C exhaust effluents
The NASA/MSFC multilayer diffusion algorithms have been specialized for the prediction of the surface impact for the dispersive transport of the exhaust effluents from the launch of a Titan 3 vehicle. This specialization permits these transport predictions to be made at the launch range in real time so that the effluent monitoring teams can optimize their monitoring grids. Basically, the data reduction routine requires just the meteorology profiles for the thermodynamics and kinematics of the atmosphere as an input. These profiles are graphed along with the resulting exhaust cloud rise history, the center line concentrations and dosages, and the hydrogen chloride isopleths
New formalism for QCD parton showers
We present a new formalism for parton shower simulation of QCD jets, which
incorporates the following features: invariance under boosts along jet axes,
improved treatment of heavy quark fragmentation, angular-ordered evolution with
soft gluon coherence, more accurate soft gluon angular distributions, and
better coverage of phase space. It is implemented in the new HERWIG++ event
generator
Herwig++ 2.0 Release Note
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.0) is now
available. This is the first version of the program which can be used for
hadron-hadron physics and includes the full simulation of both initial- and
final-state QCD radiation.Comment: Source code and additional information available at

Nondiffusive spin dynamics in a two-dimensional electron gas
We describe measurements of spin dynamics in the two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs=GaAlAs quantum wells. Optical techniques, including transient spin-grating spectroscopy, are used to probe the relaxation rates of spin polarization waves in the wave vector range from zero to 6 x 104 cm-1. We find that the spin polarization lifetime is maximal at a nonzero wave vector, in contrast with expectations based on ordinary spin diffusion, but in quantitative agreement with recent theories that treat diffusion in the presence of spin-orbit couplin
Atom clusters and vibrational excitations in chemically-disordered Pt357Fe
Inelastic nuclear resonant scattering spectra of Fe-57 atoms were measured on crystalline alloys of Pt3Fe-57 that were chemically disordered, partially ordered, and L1(2) ordered. Phonon partial density of states curves for Fe-57 were obtained from these spectra. Upon disordering, about 10% of the spectral intensity underwent a distinct shift from 25 to 19 meV. This change in optical modes accounted for most of the change of the vibrational entropy of disordering contributed by Fe atoms, which was (+0.10 +/- 0.03) k(B) (Fe atom)(-1). Prospects for parametrizing the vibrational entropy with low-order cluster variables were assessed. To calculate the difference in vibrational entropy of the disordered and ordered alloys, the clusters must be large enough to account for the abundances of several of the atom configurations of the first-nearest-neighbor shell about the Fe-57 atoms
Effects of Selective Deletion of Tyrosine Hydroxylase from Kisspeptin Cells on Puberty and Reproduction in Male and Female Mice.
The neuropeptide kisspeptin, encoded by Kiss1, regulates reproduction by stimulating GnRH secretion. Kiss1-syntheizing neurons reside primarily in the hypothalamic anteroventral periventricular (AVPV/PeN) and arcuate (ARC) nuclei. AVPV/PeN Kiss1 neurons are sexually dimorphic, with females expressing more Kiss1 than males, and participate in estradiol (E2)-induced positive feedback control of GnRH secretion. In mice, most AVPV/PeN Kiss1 cells coexpress tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine synthesis (in this case, dopamine). Dopamine treatment can inhibit GnRH neurons, but the function of dopamine signaling arising specifically from AVPV/PeN Kiss1 cells is unknown. We generated a novel TH flox mouse and used Cre-Lox technology to selectively ablate TH specifically from Kiss1 cells. We then examined the effects of selective TH knock-out on puberty and reproduction in both sexes. In control mice, 90% of AVPV/PeN Kiss1 neurons coexpressed TH, whereas in mice lacking TH exclusively in Kiss1 cells (termed Kiss THKOs), TH was successfully absent from virtually all Kiss1 cells. Despite this absence of TH, both female and male Kiss THKOs displayed normal body weights, puberty onset, and basal gonadotropin levels in adulthood, although testosterone (T) was significantly elevated in adult male Kiss THKOs. The E2-induced LH surge was unaffected in Kiss THKO females, and neuronal activation status of kisspeptin and GnRH cells was also normal. Supporting this, fertility and fecundity were normal in Kiss THKOs of both sexes. Thus, despite high colocalization of TH and Kiss1 in the AVPV/PeN, dopamine produced in these cells is not required for puberty or reproduction, and its function remains unknown
