By comparing the long-term pattern of school compositions with an economic indicator, it is possible to link this decline to the recession, but only if a further, and contentious, assumption is made about what happened in the early 1990s.     The repeated agency model has been widely applied to a number of interesting and important problems in economics, though in many instances, the fact that the standard model generates transient dynamics limits the usefulness of the results obtained from the model for the simple reason that purely transient dynamc phenomena are empirically irrelevant since they cannot be systematically observed and studied. \ In this paper, we show to embed the standard long-term contracting model in an economic environment in which the inherently transient dynamics of the model are transformed into dyanmics which are stationary and ergodic. \ We then use the model to study CEO termination and issues of corporate takeover.

    Improved Metric Distortion for Deterministic Social Choice Rules

    In this paper, we study the metric distortion of deterministic social choice rules that choose a winning candidate from a set of candidates based on voter preferences. Voters and candidates are located in an underlying metric space. A voter has cost equal to her distance to the winning candidate. Ordinal social choice rules only have access to the ordinal preferences of the voters that are assumed to be consistent with the metric distances. Our goal is to design an ordinal social choice rule with minimum distortion, which is the worst-case ratio, over all consistent metrics, between the social cost of the rule and that of the optimal omniscient rule with knowledge of the underlying metric space. The distortion of the best deterministic social choice rule was known to be between 33 and 55. It had been conjectured that any rule that only looks at the weighted tournament graph on the candidates cannot have distortion better than 55. In our paper, we disprove it by presenting a weighted tournament rule with distortion of 4.2364.236. We design this rule by generalizing the classic notion of uncovered sets, and further show that this class of rules cannot have distortion better than 4.2364.236. We then propose a new voting rule, via an alternative generalization of uncovered sets. We show that if a candidate satisfying the criterion of this voting rule exists, then choosing such a candidate yields a distortion bound of 33, matching the lower bound. We present a combinatorial conjecture that implies distortion of 33, and verify it for small numbers of candidates and voters by computer experiments. Using our framework, we also show that selecting any candidate guarantees distortion of at most 33 when the weighted tournament graph is cyclically symmetric.Comment: EC 201

    A microfluidic oligonucleotide synthesizer

    De novo gene and genome synthesis enables the design of any sequence without the requirement of a pre-existing template as in traditional genetic engineering methods. The ability to mass produce synthetic genes holds great potential for biological research, but widespread availability of de novo DNA constructs is currently hampered by their high cost. In this work, we describe a microfluidic platform for parallel solid phase synthesis of oligonucleotides that can greatly reduce the cost of gene synthesis by reducing reagent consumption (by 100-fold) while maintaining a 100 pmol synthesis scale so there is no need for amplification before assembly. Sixteen oligonucleotides were synthesized in parallel on this platform and then successfully used in a ligation-mediated assembly method to generate DNA constructs 200 bp in length

    The study of the thermal behavior of a new semicrystalline polyimide

    Thermal properties of a new semicrystalline polyimide synthesized from 3,3',4,4' benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 2,2 dimethyl 1,2-(4 aminophenoxy) propane (DMDA) were studied. Heat capacities in the solid and liquid states of BTDA-DMDA were measured. The heat capacity increase at the glass transition temperature (T sub g = 230 C) is 145 J/(C mol) for amorphous BTDA-DMDA. The equilibrium heat of fusion of the BTDA-DMDA crystals was obtained using wide angle X ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements, and it is 75.8 kJ/mol. Based on the information of crystallinity and the heat capacity increase at T sub g, a rigid amorphous fraction is identified in semicrystalline BTDA-DMDA samples. The rigid amorphous fraction represents an interfacial region between the crystalline and amorphous states. In particular, this fraction increases with the crystallinity of the sample which should be associated with crystal sizes, and therefore, with crystal morphology. It was also found that this polymer has a high temperature crystal phase upon annealing above its original melting temperature. The thermal degradation activation energies are determined to be 154 and 150 kJ/mol in nitrogen and air, respectively

    Studies on the sulfation of cellulose α-lipoate and ability of the sulfated product to stabilize colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles

A versatile method for the synthesis of cellulose α-lipoate with a low degree of substitution (DS) has been developed using N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA)/LiCl as a solvent and N,N′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) as an esterification reagent. The cellulose α-lipoate with DS of α-lipoate groups of 0.26 was converted with sulfur trioxide-pyridine complex in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent. The sulfation is accompanied by an unexpected partial oxidation of the disulfide moiety leading to the formation of the corresponding stereoisomers of S-oxides. The resulting mixture of water-soluble cellulose α- and β-lipoate sulfate possesses a DS of sulfuric acid half ester groups of 1.78. This cellulose-α/β-lipoate sulfate derivative can be used as an effective stabilizer and solubilizer for the formation of colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles formed in situ in aqueous solution

    Finite element solution of transient fluid-structure interaction problems

    A finite element approach using NASTRAN is developed for solving time-dependent fluid-structure interaction problems, with emphasis on the transient scattering of acoustic waves from submerged elastic structures. Finite elements are used for modeling both structure and fluid domains to facilitate the graphical display of the wave motion through both media. For the liquid, the use of velocity potential as the fundamental unknown results in a symmetric matrix equation. The approach is illustrated for the problem of transient scattering from a submerged elastic spherical shell subjected to an incident tone burst. The use of an analogy between the equations of elasticity and the wave equation of acoustics, a necessary ingredient to the procedure, is summarized
