Separation of lymphocytes by electrophoresis under terrestrial conditions and at zero gravity, phase 3

    Get PDF
Electrophoretic mobilities (EPM) of peripheral lymphocytes were studied from normal subjects, chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients. A technique to separate B lymphocytes and null cells from non-T lymphocyte preparation was developed. The experiments were designed to determine which subpopulation of the non-T lymphocytes is primarily affected and shows a decreased EPM in chronic hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients

Theoretical uncertainties for measurements of alpha_s from electroweak observables

One of the most precise measurements of the strong coupling constant alpha_s(MZ) is obtained in the context of global analyses of precision electroweak data. This article reviews the sensitivity of different electroweak observables to alpha_s and describes the perturbative uncertainties related to missing higher orders. The complete renormalisation scale dependence for the relevant observables is calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order and a new method is presented to determine the corresponding perturbative uncertainty for measurements of alpha_s based on these observables.Comment: v4: Revised version with new tables and figure

Linear Response Calculations of Spin Fluctuations

A variational formulation of the time--dependent linear response based on the Sternheimer method is developed in order to make practical ab initio calculations of dynamical spin susceptibilities of solids. Using gradient density functional and a muffin-tin-orbital representation, the efficiency of the approach is demonstrated by applications to selected magnetic and strongly paramagnetic metals. The results are found to be consistent with experiment and are compared with previous theoretical calculations.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex; 3 Figures, postscript, high-resolution printing (~1200dpi) is desire

Coherent states for compact Lie groups and their large-N limits

The first two parts of this article surveys results related to the heat-kernel coherent states for a compact Lie group K. I begin by reviewing the definition of the coherent states, their resolution of the identity, and the associated Segal-Bargmann transform. I then describe related results including connections to geometric quantization and (1+1)-dimensional Yang--Mills theory, the associated coherent states on spheres, and applications to quantum gravity. The third part of this article summarizes recent work of mine with Driver and Kemp on the large-N limit of the Segal--Bargmann transform for the unitary group U(N). A key result is the identification of the leading-order large-N behavior of the Laplacian on "trace polynomials."Comment: Submitted to the proceeding of the CIRM conference, "Coherent states and their applications: A contemporary panorama.

Counting Domain Walls in N=1 Super Yang-Mills Theory

We study the multiplicity of BPS domain walls in N=1 super Yang-Mills theory, by passing to a weakly coupled Higgs phase through the addition of fundamental matter. The number of domain walls connecting two specified vacuum states is then determined via the Witten index of the induced worldvolume theory, which is invariant under the deformation to the Higgs phase. The worldvolume theory is a sigma model with a Grassmanian target space which arises as the coset associated with the global symmetries broken by the wall solution. Imposing a suitable infrared regulator, the result is found to agree with recent work of Acharya and Vafa in which the walls were realized as wrapped D4-branes in IIA string theory.Comment: 28 pages, RevTeX, 3 figures; v2: discussion of the index slightly expanded, using an alternative regulator, and references added; v3: typos corrected, to appear in Phys. Spacetime singularity resolution by M-theory fivebranes: calibrated geometry, Anti-de Sitter solutions and special holonomy metrics

The supergravity description of various configurations of supersymmetric M-fivebranes wrapped on calibrated cycles of special holonomy manifolds is studied. The description is provided by solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity which interpolate smoothly between a special holonomy manifold and an event horizon with Anti-de Sitter geometry. For known examples of Anti-de Sitter solutions, the associated special holonomy metric is derived. One explicit Anti-de Sitter solution of M-theory is so treated for fivebranes wrapping each of the following cycles: K\"{a}hler cycles in Calabi-Yau two-, three- and four-folds; special lagrangian cycles in three- and four-folds; associative three- and co-associative four-cycles in G2G_2 manifolds; complex lagrangian four-cycles in Sp(2)Sp(2) manifolds; and Cayley four-cycles in Spin(7)Spin(7) manifolds. In each case, the associated special holonomy metric is singular, and is a hyperbolic analogue of a known metric. The analogous known metrics are respectively: Eguchi-Hanson, the resolved conifold and the four-fold resolved conifold; the deformed conifold, and the Stenzel four-fold metric; the Bryant-Salamon-Gibbons-Page-Pope G2G_2 metrics on an R4\mathbb{R}^4 bundle over S3S^3, and an R3\mathbb{R}^3 bundle over S4S^4 or CP2\mathbb{CP}^2; the Calabi hyper-K\"{a}hler metric on TCP2T^*\mathbb{CP}^2; and the Bryant-Salamon-Gibbons-Page-Pope Spin(7)Spin(7) metric on an R4\mathbb{R}^4 bundle over S4S^4. By the AdS/CFT correspondence, a conformal field theory is associated to each of the new singular special holonomy metrics, and defines the quantum gravitational physics of the resolution of their singularities.Comment: 1+52 page
