Regional accessibility in Europe: the impact of road infrastructure 1957-2012

Regional accessibility trends in Europe: road infrastructure, 1957–2012, Regional Studies. This paper describes the construction and analysis of a historical database of European road networks over the period 1957–2012 covering the whole European continent. Road accessibility is analysed over time for cities, regions and countries using a high-resolution population grid. The results show that many peripheral regions have lost accessibility relative to the centre during the first periods, but have been catching up after 1990. Regions and cities: five essays on interregional and spatial agglomeration

Regionaal-economische en ruimtelijk-economische modellen zijn in grote lijnen in twee modeltypen in te delen. Voor zijn promotieonderzoek keek Stelder naar diverse varianten van interregionale input-output-modellen, toegepast op Indonesië en Nederland. Verder richtte hij zich op abstracte en Europese agglomeratiemodellen uit de New Economic Geography-literatuur. Een centrale vraag is welke economische benadering per ruimtelijk niveau het meest geschikt is voor beleidssimulaties en economische voorspellingen. Een regio of stad kan het beste in samenhang met andere regio’s en steden worden bestudeerd, omdat de onderlinge economische relaties steeds intensiever worden. Op het (hogere) niveau van regio’s zijn vooral de relaties tussen bedrijfstakken belangrijk. Op het lagere niveau van de stedelijke ontwikkeling binnen de regio zijn de agglomeratie-effecten belangrijker.
