An Asian darkling beetle, Ceropria induta (Wiedemann), established in Florida (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Specimen records for an adventive darkling beetle, Ceropria induta (Wiedemann) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae; Diaperinae) show that this Asian insect has become established in southern Florida, USA. Illustrations and a diagnosis of the beetle are provided, with notes on habitats and possible polyporaceous hosts, and the genus is incorporated into a key to the related North American taxa

Evaluation of the Dawson College shooting psychological intervention: moving toward a multimodal extensive plan

In 2006, following the shooting at Dawson College, the authorities implemented an intervention plan. This provided an opportunity to analyze the responses to services offered, and afforded a learning opportunity, which led to the proposal of an extensive multimodal short- and long-term psychological plan for future needs. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered 18 months after the event, involving the participation of 948 students and staff. Mental health problems and the perception of services offered after the shooting were investigated, using standardized measures. Second, focus groups and individual interviews were conducted among a subgroup of participants (support team members; teachers and employees; students and parents) and permitted to gather data on services received and services required. Individual report of events, the extent of psychological impact and services offered and received were analyzed in terms of the following dimensions: intervention philosophy, training, ongoing offer of services and finally, detection and outreach. A significant incidence of disorders and a high rate of exacerbation of preexisting mental disorders were observed within the 18 months following the shooting. Postimmediate and short-term intervention appeared adequate, but the long-term collective vision toward community support and availability of mental health services were lacking. Lessons learned from this evaluation and other school shootings suggest that preparedness and long-term community responses are often overlooked. Análise de lineamentos estruturais no Domo de Lages (SC) com uso de imagens de satélite e mapas de relevo sombreado

Este trabalho apresenta o estudo dos lineamentos estruturais na região do Domo de Lages, porção centro-sul do Estado de Santa Catarina, e sua relação com as diferentes unidades estratigráficas da Bacia do Paraná que ocorrem na região. Os lineamentos estruturais foram interpretados a partir da análise digital de imagens de satélite e de mapas de relevo sombreado, com o uso de técnicas de geoprocessamento. Os resultados mostram lineamentos estruturais com orientações NW, NNE, NE, ENE e E-W. Os lineamentos maiores (4 - 50 km) foram interpretados a partir dos mapas de relevo sombreado, enquanto os menores (1 - 3 km) foram interpretados a partir da imagem de satélite. De acordo com os dados de campo, estes lineamentos afetam rochas vulcânicas da Formação Serra Geral da Bacia do Paraná e rochas alcalinas associadas ao domo. Em todas estas direções estruturais são encontradas evidências de falhas transcorrentes. A formação das falhas transcorrentes destrais NNE tem sido relacionada a uma tensão compressiva orientada NE-SW. Considera-se que a idade máxima de geração dessas orientações estruturais situa-se no limite do Cretáceo Superior ao Paleógeno. A formação dessas estruturas tem sido relacionada à reativação de estruturas mais antigas presentes na bacia e no seu embasamento.This work focuses on the study of structural lineaments in the Domo de Lages region, central-south area of Santa Catarina State, and their relationship with the different stratigraphic units of the Paraná Basin that are present in this area. The lineaments were interpreted from Landsat and shaded relief images, using geoprocessing techniques. The results show structural lineaments with NW, NNE, NE, ENE and E-W trends. The larger lineaments (4 - 50 km) were interpreted using shaded relief maps, whereas the smaller lineaments were interpreted using satellite images (1 - 3 km). According to field data, these lineaments affect the volcanic rocks of Serra Geral Formation (Paraná Basin) and alkaline rocks associated with the dome. In all these structural trends, evidences of transcurrent faults were found. The formation of transcurrent faults with NNE trend has been related to compressive NE-SW stress. Late Cretaceous/Paleogene is the maximum age considered for the development of these structural trends associated with transcurrent faults. The formation of this structural pattern has been linked to the reactivation of older structures present in the basin and its basement

Abstract The present work focuses on the analytical examination of privacy and private life through the concept of formal and informal forms of social control. While the formal social control is expressed through the national and international legal rules, standards and statutes, the analysis will be pointed to the substantive list of human rights guaranteeing the spheres of privacy. The second part will examine the subject in context of informal form of social control, thus determining the respect to privacy in customary culture, moral codes, and contemporary surveillance mechanisms. Correlation between radio and broad-line emissions in radio-loud quasars

Radio emission is a good indicator of the jet power of radio-loud quasars, while the emission in broad-line can well represent the accretion disc radiation in quasars. We compile a sample of all sources of which the broad-line fluxes are available from 1 Jy, S4 and S5 radio source catalogues. A correlation between radio and broad-line emission for this sample of radio-loud quasars is presented, which is in favour of a close link between the accretion processes and the relativistic jets. The BL Lac objects seem to follow the statistical behaviour of the quasars, but with fainter broad-line emission.Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in MNRA

Medication documentation in a primary care network serving North Carolina medicaid patients: results of a cross-sectional chart review

Abstract Background Medical records that do not accurately reflect the patient’s current medication list are an open invitation to errors and may compromise patient safety. Methods This cross-sectional study compares primary care provider (PCP) medication lists and pharmacy claims for 100 patients seen in 8 primary care practices and examines the association of congruence with demographic, clinical, and practice characteristics. Medication list congruence was measured as agreement of pharmacy claims with the entire PCP chart, including current medication list, visit notes, and correspondence sections. Results Congruence between pharmacy claims and the PCP chart was 65%. Congruence was associated with large chronic disease burden, frequent PCP visits, group practice, and patient age ≥45 years. Conclusion Agreement of medication lists between the PCP chart and pharmacy records is low. Medication documentation was more accurate among patients who have more chronic conditions, those who have frequent PCP visits, those whose practice has multiple providers, and those at least 45 years of age. Improved congruence among patients with multiple chronic conditions and in group practices may reflect more frequent visits and reviews by providers

PCA Tomography: how to extract information from datacubes

Astronomy has evolved almost exclusively by the use of spectroscopic and imaging techniques, operated separately. With the development of modern technologies it is possible to obtain datacubes in which one combines both techniques simultaneously, producing images with spectral resolution. To extract information from them can be quite complex, and hence the development of new methods of data analysis is desirable. We present a method of analysis of datacube (data from single field observations, containing two spatial and one spectral dimension) that uses PCA (Principal Component Analysis) to express the data in the form of reduced dimensionality, facilitating efficient information extraction from very large data sets. PCA transforms the system of correlated coordinates into a system of uncorrelated coordinates ordered by principal components of decreasing variance. The new coordinates are referred to as eigenvectors, and the projections of the data onto these coordinates produce images we will call tomograms. The association of the tomograms (images) to eigenvectors (spectra) is important for the interpretation of both. The eigenvectors are mutually orthogonal and this information is fundamental for their handling and interpretation. When the datacube shows objects that present uncorrelated physical phenomena, the eigenvector's orthogonality may be instrumental in separating and identifying them. By handling eigenvectors and tomograms one can enhance features, extract noise, compress data, extract spectra, etc. We applied the method, for illustration purpose only, to the central region of the LINER galaxy NGC 4736, and demonstrate that it has a type 1 active nucleus, not known before.
