Ground-state energy of a high-density electron gas in a strong magnetic field
The high-density electron gas in a strong magnetic field B and at zero
temperature is investigated. The quantum strong-field limit is considered in
which only the lowest Landau level is occupied. It is shown that the
perturbation series of the ground-state energy can be represented in analogy to
the Gell-Mann Brueckner expression of the ground-state energy of the field-free
electron gas. The role of the expansion parameter is taken by instead of the field-free Gell-Mann Brueckner

Laser fluorescence studies of the chemical interactions of sodium species with sulfur bearing fuels
By using a large matrix of fuel rich and fuel lean H2/O2/N2 and fuel rich C2H2/O2/N2 flames, the behavior of sodium and its interactions with sulfur at high temperatures was extensively characterized. OH concentrations were measured for each flame using the previously validated laser induced fluorescence technique. Sodium atomic concentrations were obtained by the saturated laser fluorescence method. Measurements were made in the absence and presence of up to 2% sulfur. In oxygen rich systems sodium is depleted by NaO2 and NaOH formation. The relative amounts of each are controlled by the degree of nonequilibration of the flame radicals and by the temperature. The bond strength of NaO2 was established. For the first time, a complete understanding of the complex behavior of sodium in fuel lean H2/O2 flames has emerged and computer modeling has permitted various rate constants of Na, NaO2 and NaOH reactions to be approximately fixed
Copper Complexation by Dissolved Organic Matter in arid Soils: A Voltametric Study
A voltammetric method was used to estimate the complexing capacity of water extracts from both desert soils sampled at the root zone of creosote and salt cedar plants, and in soils from interspace or background regions where no vegetative influence was apparent. The copper complexing capacity of water extracts of these desert soils was influenced by contact time and pH. In soils from the root zones of creosote and salt cedar plant, copper complexation capacities at pH 8 were from 5 µM to 60 µM after five min contact periods, while 18 h contact periods yielded copper complexation capacities of 40 µM–80 µM. Soils with no vegetative influence had copper complexing capacities of less the 2 µM. The copper complexing capacities of these soils are well correlated with the concentration of organic carbon in the water extract (r2 = 0.86). The abundance of soluble organic matter in the root zone of desert shrubs has the potential to control the solution speciation of Cu2+. The formation of soluble complexes should also have an important influence on the plant uptake and transport of copper, as well as other heavy metals in the root zones of desert shrubs and beyond

Monitor can be used as integral part of neutron generator. It has been used to measure titanium tritide film thicknesses from 0.1 to 30 micrometers
Extracting joint weak values with local, single-particle measurements
Weak measurement is a new technique which allows one to describe the
evolution of postselected quantum systems. It appears to be useful for
resolving a variety of thorny quantum paradoxes, particularly when used to
study properties of pairs of particles. Unfortunately, such nonlocal or joint
observables often prove difficult to measure weakly in practice (for instance,
in optics -- a common testing ground for this technique -- strong photon-photon
interactions would be needed). Here we derive a general, experimentally
feasible, method for extracting these values from correlations between
