A Stochastic-MILP dispatch optimization model for Concentrated Solar Thermal under uncertainty
Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) offers a promising solution for large-scale
solar energy utilization as Thermal Energy Storage (TES) enables electricity
generation independently of daily solar fluctuations, shifting to high-priced
electricity intervals. The development of dispatch planning tools is mandatory
to account for uncertainties associated with solar irradiation and electricity
price forecasts as well as limited storage capacity. This study proposes the
Stochastic Mixed Integer Linear Program (SMILP) to maximize expected profit
within a specified scenario space. The SMILP scenario space is generated by
different Empirical Cumulative Distribution Function percentiles of the
potential solar energy to accumulate in storage and the expected profit is
estimated using the Sample Average Approximation (SAA) method. SMILP exhibits
robust performance, however, its computational time poses a challenge. Thus,
three heuristic solutions are developed which run a set of deterministic
optimizations on different historical weather profiles to generate candidate
dispatching plans (DPs). The candidate DP with the best average performance on
all profiles is then selected. The new methods were applied to a case study for
a 115 MW CST plant in South Australia. When the historical database has a
limited set of historical weather profiles, the SMILP achieves 6% to 9% higher
profit than the closest benchmark when the DP is applied to novel weather
conditions. With a large historical weather data, the performance of SMILP and
Heuristic-2 becomes nearly identical because the SMILP can only utilize a
limited number of trajectories for optimization without becoming
computationally infeasible. In this case, Heuristic-2 emerges a practical
alternative, since it provides similar average profit in a reasonable time

Development of an international standard set of outcome measures for patients with atrial fibrillation: a report of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) atrial fibrillation working group.
AIMS: As health systems around the world increasingly look to measure and improve the value of care that they provide to patients, being able to measure the outcomes that matter most to patients is vital. To support the shift towards value-based health care in atrial fibrillation (AF), the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) assembled an international Working Group (WG) of 30 volunteers, including health professionals and patient representatives to develop a standardized minimum set of outcomes for benchmarking care delivery in clinical settings. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using an online-modified Delphi process, outcomes important to patients and health professionals were selected and categorized into (i) long-term consequences of disease outcomes, (ii) complications of treatment outcomes, and (iii) patient-reported outcomes. The WG identified demographic and clinical variables for use as case-mix risk adjusters. These included baseline demographics, comorbidities, cognitive function, date of diagnosis, disease duration, medications prescribed and AF procedures, as well as smoking, body mass index (BMI), alcohol intake, and physical activity. Where appropriate, and for ease of implementation, standardization of outcomes and case-mix variables was achieved using ICD codes. The standard set underwent an open review process in which over 80% of patients surveyed agreed with the outcomes captured by the standard set. CONCLUSION: Implementation of these consensus recommendations could help institutions to monitor, compare and improve the quality and delivery of chronic AF care. Their consistent definition and collection, using ICD codes where applicable, could also broaden the implementation of more patient-centric clinical outcomes research in AF
Gate-tuned normal and superconducting transport at the surface of a topological insulator
Three-dimensional topological insulators are characterized by the presence of
a bandgap in their bulk and gapless Dirac fermions at their surfaces. New
physical phenomena originating from the presence of the Dirac fermions are
predicted to occur, and to be experimentally accessible via transport
measurements in suitably designed electronic devices. Here we study transport
through superconducting junctions fabricated on thin Bi2Se3 single crystals,
equipped with a gate electrode. In the presence of perpendicular magnetic field
B, sweeping the gate voltage enables us to observe the filling of the Dirac
fermion Landau levels, whose character evolves continuously from electron- to
hole-like. When B=0, a supercurrent appears, whose magnitude can be gate tuned,
and is minimum at the charge neutrality point determined from the Landau level
filling. Our results demonstrate how gated nano-electronic devices give control
over normal and superconducting transport of Dirac fermions at an individual
surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figure
Emotions in business-to-business service relationships
Emotion in business-to-business service relationships regarding cargo services is explored. The service relationship is characterised by mutual trust and cooperation. Contact is mainly via telephone or e-mail with some face-to-face interactions and participants providing a complex, multi-skilled seamless service. Experience rather than training plays a vital role with long-term service relationships built up and maintained. Emotional sensitivity is acquired partly by experience and a repeat customer base but mainly through a genuine desire to help and get to know others. In contrast to the view of emotional labour bringing managerial control or adverse affects to service staff, the emotion engendered by this work is authentic expression bringing personal satisfaction
Ambipolar Field Effect in Topological Insulator Nanoplates of (BixSb1-x)2Te3
Topological insulators represent a new state of quantum matter attractive to
both fundamental physics and technological applications such as spintronics and
quantum information processing. In a topological insulator, the bulk energy gap
is traversed by spin-momentum locked surface states forming an odd number of
surface bands that possesses unique electronic properties. However, transport
measurements have often been dominated by residual bulk carriers from crystal
defects or environmental doping which mask the topological surface
contribution. Here we demonstrate (BixSb1-x)2Te3 as a tunable topological
insulator system to manipulate bulk conductivity by varying the Bi/Sb
composition ratio. (BixSb1-x)2Te3 ternary compounds are confirmed as
topological insulators for the entire composition range by angle resolved
photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and ab initio calculations.
Additionally, we observe a clear ambipolar gating effect similar to that
observed in graphene using nanoplates of (BixSb1-x)2Te3 in
field-effect-transistor (FET) devices. The manipulation of carrier type and
concentration in topological insulator nanostructures demonstrated in this
study paves the way for implementation of topological insulators in
nanoelectronics and spintronics.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Assessing Deaf Cultural Competency of Physicians and Medical Students
The Medical Students, Cancer Control, and the Deaf Community Training program (DCT) intended to create physicians who were culturally competent to care for deaf patients were evaluated. DCT medical students (n = 22), UCSD medical faculty (n = 131), and non-DCT medical students (n = 211) were anonymously surveyed about their perceptions related to deaf patients, deaf cultural competency, and interpreter use. The faculty and non-DCT medical students displayed less knowledge than the DCT students. These findings suggest that training medical students in deaf cultural competency can significantly increase their capacity to care for community members and reduce the health disparities experienced by this community
Metabolic suppression in thecosomatous pteropods as an effect of low temperature and hypoxia in the eastern tropical North Pacific

The definitive version was published in Marine Biology 159 (2012): 1955-1967, doi:10.1007/s00227-012-1982-x.Many pteropod species in the eastern tropical north Pacific Ocean migrate vertically each day, transporting organic matter and respiratory carbon below the thermocline. These migrations take species into cold (15-10ºC) hypoxic water (< 20 µmol O2 kg-1) at depth. We measured the vertical distribution, oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion for seven species of pteropod, some of which migrate and some which remain in oxygenated surface waters throughout the day. Within the upper 200 meters of the water column, changes in water temperature result in a ~60-75% reduction in respiration for most species. All three species tested under hypoxic conditions responded to low O2 with an additional ~35-50% reduction in respiratory rate. Combined, low temperature and hypoxia suppress the metabolic rate of pteropods by ~80-90%. These results shed light on the ways in which expanding regions of hypoxia and surface ocean warming may impact pelagic ecology.This work was funded by National Science Foundation grants to K. International trends in clinical characteristics and oral anticoagulation treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation: Results from the GARFIELD-AF, ORBIT-AF I, and ORBIT-AF II registries.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in the world. We aimed to provide comprehensive data on international patterns of AF stroke prevention treatment. METHODS: Demographics, comorbidities, and stroke risk of the patients in the GARFIELD-AF (n=51,270), ORBIT-AF I (n=10,132), and ORBIT-AF II (n=11,602) registries were compared (overall N=73,004 from 35 countries). Stroke prevention therapies were assessed among patients with new-onset AF (≤6 weeks). RESULTS: Patients from GARFIELD-AF were less likely to be white (63% vs 89% for ORBIT-AF I and 86% for ORBIT-AF II) or have coronary artery disease (19% vs 36% and 27%), but had similar stroke risk (85% CHA2DS2-VASc ≥2 vs 91% and 85%) and lower bleeding risk (11% with HAS-BLED ≥3 vs 24% and 15%). Oral anticoagulant use was 46% and 57% for patients with a CHA2DS2-VASc=0 and 69% and 87% for CHA2DS2-VASc ≥2 in GARFIELD-AF and ORBIT-AF II, respectively, but with substantial geographic heterogeneity in use of oral anticoagulant (range: 31%-93% [GARFIELD-AF] and 66%-100% [ORBIT-AF II]). Among patients with new-onset AF, non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant use increased over time to 43% in 2016 for GARFIELD-AF and 71% for ORBIT-AF II, whereas use of antiplatelet monotherapy decreased from 36% to 17% (GARFIELD-AF) and 18% to 8% (ORBIT-AF I and II). CONCLUSIONS: Among new-onset AF patients, non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant use has increased and antiplatelet monotherapy has decreased. However, anticoagulation is used frequently in low-risk patients and inconsistently in those at high risk of stroke. Significant geographic variability in anticoagulation persists and represents an opportunity for improvement
KRILLBASE: a circumpolar database of Antarctic krill and salp numerical densities, 1926–2016
Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and salps are major macroplankton contributors to Southern
Ocean food webs and krill are also fished commercially. Managing this fishery sustainably, against a backdrop of
rapid regional climate change, requires information on distribution and time trends. Many data on the abundance
of both taxa have been obtained from net sampling surveys since 1926, but much of this is stored in national
archives, sometimes only in notebooks. In order to make these important data accessible we have collated available

Health Locus of Control and Assimilation of Cervical Cancer Information in Deaf Women
This study assessed the relationship between Deaf women's internal health locus of control (IHLC) and their cervical cancer knowledge acquisition and retention. A blind, randomized trial evaluated Deaf women's (N = 130) baseline cancer knowledge and knowledge gained and retained from an educational intervention, in relation to their IHLC. The Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales measured baseline IHLC, and a cervical cancer knowledge survey evaluated baseline to post-intervention knowledge change. Women's IHLC did not significantly predict greater cervical cancer knowledge at baseline or over time. IHLC does not appear to be a characteristic that must be considered when creating Deaf women's cancer education programs
