Thermal Stability of the Magnetization in Perpendicularly Magnetized Thin Film Nanomagnets
Understanding the stability of thin film nanomagnets with perpendicular
magnetic anisotropy (PMA) against thermally induced magnetization reversal is
important when designing perpendicularly magnetized patterned media and
magnetic random access memories. The leading-order dependence of magnetization
reversal rates are governed by the energy barrier the system needs to surmount
in order for reversal to proceed. In this paper we study the reversal dynamics
of these systems and compute the relevant barriers using the string method of
E, Vanden-Eijnden, and Ren. We find the reversal to be often spatially
incoherent; that is, rather than the magnetization flipping as a rigid unit,
reversal proceeds instead through a soliton-like domain wall sweeping through
the system. We show that for square nanomagnetic elements the energy barrier
increases with element size up to a critical length scale, beyond which the
energy barrier is constant. For circular elements the energy barrier continues
to increase indefinitely, albeit more slowly beyond a critical size. In both
cases the energy barriers are smaller than those expected for coherent

Stability of 2pi domain walls in ferromagnetic nanorings
The stability of 2pi domain walls in ferromagnetic nanorings is investigated
via calculation of the minimum energy path that separates a 2pi domain wall
from the vortex state of a ferromagnetic nanoring. Trapped domains are stable
when they exist between certain types of transverse domain walls, i.e., walls
in which the edge defects on the same side of the magnetic strip have equal
sign and thus repel. Here the energy barriers between these configurations and
vortex magnetization states are obtained using the string method. Due to the
geometry of a ring, two types of 2pi walls must be distinguished that differ by
their overall topological index and exchange energy. The minimum energy path
corresponds to the expulsion of a vortex. The energy barrier for annihilation
of a 2pi wall is compared to the activation energy for transitions between the

Dry-season Water Quality in the San Gabriel River Watershed
Dry-season flow in the San Gabriel River system is comprised mostly of discharges from water reclamation plants (WRPs), imported water, and storm drains. Although the magnitude of dry-season discharge is generally known, the water quality associated with most of these ‘‘introduced’’ discharges has not been characterized, nor has the associated in-stream response, particularly near storm drain discharges. The goal of this study was to characterize the pattern and magnitude of storm drain and WRP inputs to the San Gabriel River system and the associated in-stream response. To accomplish this, two synoptic dry-weather surveys were conducted, one in 2002 and the other in 2003 during which flow, metals, bacteria, and nutrient concentrations were measured from the WRPs, storm drains, and in-stream locations at a single point in time. For bacteria and most metals, storm drains accounted for the majority of mass emissions to the river. In contrast, WRPs were the primary source for nutrients. In-stream water quality concentrations generally reflected the main sources. For example, in-stream ammonia concentrations were highest downstream of WRP discharges. In-stream bacteria concentrations were consistently high and showed no apparent spatial pattern, suggesting that storm drains or other in-stream sources are present throughout the watershed
Framework and tool for rapid assessment of stream susceptibility to hydromodification
ABSTRACT: Changes in streamflow and sediment loading associated with urban development have the potential to exacerbate channel erosion, and result in impacts to wetland, riparian, and stream habitats, as well as infrastructure and property losses. The typical ''one-size-fits-all'' management prescription of flow control with retention or detention basins has not been wholly effective, pointing to a need for improved management strategies and tools for mitigating the impacts of ''hydromodification.'' We present an approach for developing screeninglevel tools for assessing channel susceptibility to hydromodification, and describe a novel tool for rapid, fieldbased assessments of the relative susceptibility of stream segments. The tool is based on the results of extensive field surveys, which indicate that susceptibility is the driver of channel response, not the magnitude of urbanization. A combination of relatively simple, but quantitative, field indicators are used as input parameters for a set of decision trees that follow a logical progression in assigning categorical susceptibility ratings to the channel segment being assessed. The susceptibility rating informs the level of data collection, modeling, and ultimate mitigation efforts that can be expected for a particular stream segment type. The screening approach represents a critical first step toward tailoring hydromodification management strategies and mitigation measures to different stream types and geomorphic settings
Distribution and Length Frequency of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois sp.) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico
The purpose of this communication is to document continued spatial expansion of lionfish farther west into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Furthermore, we provide the first length— mass relationships and length frequency information for lionfishes captured within the northern GOM based on data collected as part of a broader on—going study of lionfish life history in this region
Microcystin Prevalence throughout Lentic Waterbodies in Coastal Southern California.
Toxin producing cyanobacterial blooms have increased globally in recent decades in both frequency and intensity. Despite the recognition of this growing risk, the extent and magnitude of cyanobacterial blooms and cyanotoxin prevalence is poorly characterized in the heavily populated region of southern California. Recent assessments of lentic waterbodies (depressional wetlands, lakes, reservoirs and coastal lagoons) determined the prevalence of microcystins and, in some cases, additional cyanotoxins. Microcystins were present in all waterbody types surveyed although toxin concentrations were generally low across most habitats, as only a small number of sites exceeded California's recreational health thresholds for acute toxicity. Results from passive samplers (Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT)) indicated microcystins were prevalent throughout lentic waterbodies and that traditional discrete samples underestimated the presence of microcystins. Multiple cyanotoxins were detected simultaneously in some systems, indicating multiple stressors, the risk of which is uncertain since health thresholds are based on exposures to single toxins. Anatoxin-a was detected for the first time from lakes in southern California. The persistence of detectable microcystins across years and seasons indicates a low-level, chronic risk through both direct and indirect exposure. The influence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms is a more complex stressor than presently recognized and should be included in water quality monitoring programs

DSM‐5 and ICD‐11 definitions of posttraumatic stress disorder: Investigating “narrow” and “broad” approaches
Background: The development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM-5) and ICD-11 has led to reconsideration of diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys allow investigation of the implications of the changing criteria compared to DSM-IV and ICD-10.
Methods: WMH Surveys in 13 countries asked respondents to enumerate all their lifetime traumatic events (TEs) and randomly selected one TE per respondent for PTSD assessment. DSM-IV and ICD-10 PTSD were assessed for the 23,936 respondents who reported lifetime TEs in these surveys with the fully structured Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). DSM-5 and proposed ICD-11 criteria were approximated. Associations of the different criteria sets with indicators of clinical severity (distress-impairment, suicidality, comorbid fear-distress disorders, PTSD symptom duration) were examined to investigate the implications of using the different systems.
Results: A total of 5.6% of respondents met criteria for broadly defined PTSD (i.e., full criteria in at least one diagnostic system), with prevalence ranging from 3.0% with DSM-5 to 4.4% with ICD-10. Only one-third of broadly defined cases met criteria in all four systems and another one third in only one system (narrowly defined cases). Between-system differences in indicators of clinical severity suggest that ICD-10 criteria are least strict and DSM-IV criteria most strict. The more striking result, though, is that significantly elevated indicators of clinical significance were found even for narrowly defined cases for each of the four diagnostic systems.
Conclusions: These results argue for a broad definition of PTSD defined by any one of the different systems to capture all clinically significant cases of PTSD in future studies
Task shifting and integration of HIV care into primary care in South Africa: The development and content of the streamlining tasks and roles to expand treatment and care for HIV (STRETCH) intervention
Background: Task shifting and the integration of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care into primary care services have been identified as possible strategies for improving access to antiretroviral treatment (ART). This paper describes the development and content of an intervention involving these two strategies, as part of the Streamlining Tasks and Roles to Expand Treatment and Care for HIV (STRETCH) pragmatic randomised controlled trial. Methods: Developing the intervention: The intervention was developed following discussions with senior management, clinicians, and clinic staff. These discussions revealed that the establishment of separate antiretroviral treatment services for HIV had resulted in problems in accessing care due to the large number of patients at ART clinics. The intervention developed therefore combined the shifting from doctors to nurses of prescriptions of antiretrovirals (ARVs) for uncomplicated patients and the stepwise integration of HIV care into primary care services. Results: Components of the intervention: The intervention consisted of regulatory changes, training, and guidelines to support nurse ART prescription, local management teams, an implementation toolkit, and a flexible, phased introduction. Nurse supervisors were equipped to train intervention clinic nurses in ART prescription using outreach education and an integrated primary care guideline. Management teams were set up and a STRETCH coordinator was appointed to oversee the implementation process. Discussion: Three important processes were used in developing and implementing this intervention: active participation of clinic staff and local and provincial management, educational outreach to train nurses in intervention sites, and an external facilitator to support all stages of the intervention rollout
