User's manual for Interactive Data Display System (IDDS)
A computer graphics package for the visualization of three-dimensional flow in turbomachinery has been developed and tested. This graphics package, called IDDS (Interactive Data Display System), is able to 'unwrap' the volumetric data cone associated with a centrifugal compressor and display the results in an easy to understand two-dimensional manner. IDDS will provide the majority of the visualization and analysis capability for the ICE (Integrated CFD and Experiment) system. This document is intended to serve as a user's manual for IDDS in a stand-alone mode. Currently, IDDS is capable of plotting two- or three-dimensional simulation data, but work is under way to expand IDDS so that experimental data can be accepted, plotted, and compared with a simulation dataset of the actual hardware being tested
Genetically Distinct Behavioral Modules Underlie Natural Variation in Thermal Performance Curves
Thermal reaction norms pervade organismal traits as stereotyped responses to temperature, a fundamental environmental input into sensory and physiological systems. Locomotory behavior represents an especially plastic read-out of animal response, with its dynamic dependence on environmental stimuli presenting a challenge for analysis and for understanding the genomic architecture of heritable variation. Here we characterize behavioral reaction norms as thermal performance curves for the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae, using a collection of 23 wild isolate genotypes and 153 recombinant inbred lines to quantify the extent of genetic and plastic variation in locomotory behavior to temperature changes. By reducing the dimensionality of the multivariate phenotypic response with a function-valued trait framework, we identified genetically distinct behavioral modules that contribute to the heritable variation in the emergent overall behavioral thermal performance curve. Quantitative trait locus mapping isolated regions on Chromosome II associated with locomotory activity at benign temperatures and Chromosome V loci related to distinct aspects of sensitivity to high temperatures, with each quantitative trait locus explaining up to 28% of trait variation. These findings highlight how behavioral responses to environmental inputs as thermal reaction norms can evolve through independent changes to genetically distinct modular components of such complex phenotypes
SBIR/STTR Programs
This presentation provides an overview of the NASA mission and overviews of both the Innovative Partnerships Program (IPP) and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) programs and how they relate to each other and to the NASA mission. Examples are provided concerning NASA technology needs and how the SBIR program has not only enabled technology development to meet those needs, but has also facilitated the infusion of that technology into the NASA mission
NASA SCaN Overview and Ka-Band Actvities
The Ka- and Broadband Communications Conference is an international forum attended by worldwide experts in the area of Ka-Band Propagation and satellite communications. Since its inception, NASA has taken the initiative of organizing and leading technical sections on RF Propagation and satellite communications, solidifying its worldwide leadership in the aforementioned areas. Consequently, participation in this conference through the contributions described below will maintain NASA leadership in Ka- and above RF Propagation as it relates to enhancing current and future satellite communication systems supporting space exploration
Coherently tunable third-order nonlinearity in a nanojunction
A possibility of tuning the phase of the third-order Kerr-type nonlinear
susceptibility in a system consisting of two interacting metal nanospheres and
a nonlinearly polarizable molecule is investigated theoretically and
numerically. It is shown that by varying the relative inter-sphere separation,
it is possible to tune the phase of the effective nonlinear susceptibility

Broadband stimulated four-wave parametric conversion on a tantalum pentoxide photonic chip
We exploit the large third order nonlinear susceptibility (?(3) or “Chi 3”) of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) planar waveguides and realize broadband optical parametric conversion on-chip. We use a co-linear pump-probe configuration and observe stimulated four wave parametric conversion when seeding either in the visible or the infrared. Pumping at 800 nm we observe parametric conversion over a broad spectral range with the parametric idler output spanning from 1200 nm to 1600 nm in infrared wavelengths and from 555 nm to 600 nm in visible wavelengths. Our demonstration of on-chip stimulated four wave parametric conversion introduces Ta2O5 as a novel material for broadband integrated nonlinear photonic circuit applications
Second harmonic generation, beam dynamics and spatial soliton generation in periodically poled KTiOPO4
Spatial solitons were investigated in periodically poled KTiOPO4 under conditions of second harmonic generation and many new features associated with soliton generation in quasi-phase-matched samples were observed. The effects on the second harmonic generation tuning curves of the beam narrowing mechanisms responsible for soliton generation were found to be dramatic. It was demonstrated experimentally that the mutual collapse of the fundamental and harmonic beams is a complex phenomenon
