Optimal Renormalization-Group Improvement of R(s) via the Method of Characteristics
We discuss the application of the method of characteristics to the
renormalization-group equation for the perturbative QCD series within the
electron-positron annihilation cross-section. We demonstrate how one such
renormalization-group improvement of this series is equivalent to a closed-form
summation of the first four towers of renormalization-group accessible
logarithms to all orders of perturbation theory
Asymptotics of Relativistic Spin Networks
The stationary phase technique is used to calculate asymptotic formulae for
SO(4) Relativistic Spin Networks. For the tetrahedral spin network this gives
the square of the Ponzano-Regge asymptotic formula for the SU(2) 6j symbol. For
the 4-simplex (10j-symbol) the asymptotic formula is compared with numerical
calculations of the Spin Network evaluation. Finally we discuss the asymptotics
of the SO(3,1) 10j-symbol.Comment: 31 pages, latex. v3: minor clarification
A gauge invariant and string independent fermion correlator in the Schwinger model
We introduce a gauge invariant and string independent two-point fermion
correlator which is analyzed in the context of the Schwinger model (QED_2). We
also derive an effective infrared worldline action for this correlator, thus
enabling the computation of its infrared behavior. Finally, we briefly discuss
possible perspectives for the string independent correlator in the QED_3
effective models for the normal state of HTc superconductors.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe
Final Report: Buffalo National River Ecosystems
The objective of this study was to sample the Buffalo River on a seasonal basis for a year, in order to determine whether any potential water quality problems existed
Thermodynamics, Structure, and Dynamics of Water Confined between Hydrophobic Plates
We perform molecular dynamics simulations of 512 water-like molecules that
interact via the TIP5P potential and are confined between two smooth
hydrophobic plates that are separated by 1.10 nm. We find that the anomalous
thermodynamic properties of water are shifted to lower temperatures relative to
the bulk by K. The dynamics and structure of the confined water
resemble bulk water at higher temperatures, consistent with the shift of
thermodynamic anomalies to lower temperature. Due to this shift, our
confined water simulations (down to K) do not reach sufficiently low
temperature to observe a liquid-liquid phase transition found for bulk water at
K using the TIP5P potential. We find that the different
crystalline structures that can form for two different separations of the
plates, 0.7 nm and 1.10 nm, have no counterparts in the bulk system, and
discuss the relevance to experiments on confined water.Comment: 31 pages, 14 figure
Renormalization schemes and the range of two-nucleon effective field theory
The OS and PDS renormalization schemes for the effective field theory with
nucleons and pions are investigated. We explain in detail how the
renormalization is implemented using local counterterms. Fits to the NN
scattering data are performed in the 1S0 and 3S1 channels for different values
of mu_R. An error analysis indicates that the range of the theory with
perturbative pions is consistent with 500 MeV.Comment: 40 pages, typos corrected, journal version. Discussion of the range

Probing the Rho Spectral Function in Hot and Dense Nuclear Matter by Dileptons
We present a dynamical study of and production in
proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at CERN-SPS energies on the basis
of the covariant transport approach HSD employing a momentum-dependent
-meson spectral function that includes the pion modifications in the
nuclear medium as well as the polarization of the -meson due to resonant
scattering. We find that the experimental data from the CERES and
HELIOS-3 Collaborations can be described equally well as within the dropping
-mass scenario. Whereas corresponding dilepton -spectra are found to
be very similar, the inclusive dilepton yield in the invariant mass range GeV should allow to disentangle the two scenarios
experimentally.Comment: 13 pages RevTeX slightly revised, 6 eps-figure
Lattice model of gas condensation within nanopores
We explore the thermodynamic behavior of gases adsorbed within a nanopore.
The theoretical description employs a simple lattice gas model, with two
species of site, expected to describe various regimes of adsorption and
condensation behavior. The model includes four hypothetical phases: a
cylindrical shell phase (S), in which the sites close to the cylindrical wall
are occupied, an axial phase (A), in which sites along the cylinder's axis are
occupied, a full phase (F), in which all sites are occupied, and an empty phase
(E). We obtain exact results at T=0 for the phase behavior, which is a function
of the interactions present in any specific problem. We obtain the
corresponding results at finite T from mean field theory. Finally, we examine
the model's predicted phase behavior of some real gases adsorbed in nanopores
