    The Professional Status of Male and Female Academy of Management Members: A Comparison of Perceptions, 1975-1976

    The Committee on the Status of Women in the Management Profession commissioned this study to obtain information about the education, professional status, and career development of persons in, or desiring to enter, the management profession. This study investigated the professional status of 90 male and 81 female Academy of Management members. In March of 1975, a questionnaire was mailed to all 175 females listed in the "1975-1976 Academy of Management Membership Directory." Responses were received from 81 women. In February 1976, a similar form was mailed to a random sample of 175 male members. Ninety usable questionnaires were returned. The variables assessed in the questionnaires include: (1) perceptions about relative salary and promotion status; (2) recent job search behavior and results; (3) impact of the women's movement on respondent's professional life; (4) feelings about and perceptions of the professional environment and its opportunities for female Academy members; and (5) age and salary levels. The Murray Archive holds additional analogue materials for this study (coding sheets of the questionnaire data and accompanying codebooks).     A computer approach to university curriculum design for administrative management

    This study was a comparison of administrative management duties for seven Standard Industrial Classification groups: mining; construction; manufacturing; transportation and public utilities; wholesale and retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; and service and miscellaneous and five business organizations: Administrative Management Society (AMS), American Records Management Association (ARMA), Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), National Secretaries Association (NSA), and Systems and Procedures Association (SPA) to determine specific curricula for administrative management careers. Harris County members of AMS, ARMA, DPMA, NSA, and SPA were found to be representative of the United States by industry according to Census Bureau figures. Organization members hold position careers related to the organization. Respondents to a questionnaire survey were compared on the basis of career and on the basis of industry. As a basis of comparison, questions were asked and fifty-nine duties were listed. Respondents were asked to rank the duties as major, occasional, or to disregard those that did not apply to them.     Gender and Organizations: A Selective Review and a Critique of a Neglected Area

    This paper has two linked tasks: one strategic, the other tactical. The first is to provide a critical review of the state of knowledge within organization theory of the topic of gender and organizations. This is seen as a necessary project both because of the relative neglect of the topic and the scatter and variety of relevant literature. A second task, that is tactical in nature, is the reapplication of the typology of organizational analyses developed by Burrell and Morgan. The topic is reviewed in terms of functionalist, interpretive, radical structuralist, and radical humanist paradigms, together with the consideration of feminist critiques. Specific discussion is given to the questions of work and the division of labour, power and authority, and sexuality. The paper is concluded with a brief analysis of the implications of this literature for the general development of organization theory, and the specific implications for women and men researchers
