Ubiquitous computing: Anytime, anyplace, anywhere?
Computers are ubiquitous, in terms that they are everywhere, but does this mean the same as ubiquitous computing? Views are divided. The convergent device (one-does-all) view posits the computer as a tool through which anything, and indeed everything, can be done (Licklider & Taylor, 1968). The divergent device (many-do-all) view, by contrast, offers a world where microprocessors are embedded in everything and communicating with one another (Weiser, 1991). This debate is implicitly present in this issue, with examples of the convergent device in Crook & Barrowcliff's paper and in Gay et al's paper, and examples of the divergent devices in Thomas & Gellersen's paper and Baber's paper. I suspect both streams of technology are likely to co-exist
Automotive automation: Investigating the impact on drivers' mental workload
Recent advances in technology have meant that an increasing number of vehicle driving
tasks are becoming automated. Such automation poses new problems for the ergonomist.
Of particular concern in this paper are the twofold effects of automation on mental
workload - novel technologies could increase attentional demand and workload,
alternatively one could argue that fewer driving tasks will lead to the problem of reduced
attentional demand and driver underload. A brief review of previous research is
presented, followed by an overview of current research taking place in the Southampton
Driving Simulator. Early results suggest that automation does reduce workload, and that
underload is indeed a problem, with a significant proportion of drivers unable to
effectively reclaim control of the vehicle in an automation failure scenario. Ultimately,
this research and a subsequent program of studies will be interpreted within the
framework of a recently proposed theory of action, with a view to maximizing both
theoretical and applied benefits of this domain
A measurement of the vibrational band strength for the upsilon sub 3 band of the HO2 radical
The HO2 radicals generated in a discharge-flow system were observed with tunable diode laser absorption in the P-branch of the nu(3) vibrationall band at 1080/cm. The observed line positions agree with those calculated from the molecular constants for the nu(3) bland obtained from a previous study using laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The band strength was determined by observing line center absoptions when HO2 is produced in the reaction F + H2O2 yields HO2 + HF (k1) with a measured concentration of atomic fluorine and excess hydrogen peroxide. F-atom concentrations are measured by diode laser absorption of the spin-orbit transition at 404/cm. The analysis accounts for HO2 losses due to the reactions of HO2 + HO2 yields H2O2 + O2 (k3) and F + HO2 yields HF + O2 (k4). The line strength for the 6(15) 7(16) F(1) transition is 2.9 x 10 to the 21st power sq cm/molecule/cm which corresponds to a nu(3) band strength of 34 +/- 9 sq/cm(STP atm). This value is a factor of 6 lower than previous ab initio calculations. These results will be useful in assessing the feasibility of atmospheric measurements of HO2 using infrared absorption techniques
Reliability of perceptions of voice quality: evidence from a problem asthma clinic population
<p>Introduction: Methods of perceptual voice evaluation have yet to achieve satisfactory consistency; complete acceptance of a recognised clinical protocol is still some way off.</p>
<p>Materials and methods: Three speech and language therapists rated the voices of 43 patients attending the problem asthma clinic of a teaching hospital, according to the grade-roughness-breathiness-asthenicity-strain (GRBAS) scale and other perceptual categories.</p>
<p>Results and analysis: Use of the GRBAS scale achieved only a 64.7 per cent inter-rater reliability and a 69.6 per cent intra-rater reliability for the grade component. One rater achieved a higher degree of consistency. Improved concordance on the GRBAS scale was observed for subjects with laryngeal abnormalities. Raters failed to reach any useful level of agreement in the other categories employed, except for perceived gender.</p>
<p>Discussion: These results should sound a note of caution regarding routine adoption of the GRBAS scale for characterising voice quality for clinical purposes. The importance of training and the use of perceptual anchors for reliable perceptual rating need to be further investigated.</p>

of the teams of researchers that tackle these complex
challenges. Information schools are in a unique position to
participate across a range of these projects. This poster describes
an initiative to discover potential areas for collaboration between
Syracuse University???s iSchool and the College of Visual and
Performing Arts, focusing on the synergies between information,
technology, art and design
Comparing verbal media for alarm handling: Speech versus textual displays
The rise of computers in command and control domains has meant that control operations can be performed via desk-based visual display terminals. This trend has also produced the potential to display information to operators in a variety of formats. Of particular interest has been the use of text-based displays for alarm presentation. There are possible limitations to the use of text for alarm presentation, not least of which is the need for a dedicated alarms display screen (or, at least, a display page). Given the capability of computers to synthesize speech, it is possible that speech-based alarms could generate the same information as text-based displays without the need for dedicated screen space. In this paper an experimental comparison of speech-based and text-based displays for presentation of alarms is reported. The findings show that speech leads to longer response times than text displays, but that it has minimal effect on the efficacy of fault handling. The results are discussed within the alarm initiated activities framework and implications for alarm system design are outlined
Behavioural compensation by drivers of a simulator when using a vision enhancement system
Technological progress is suggesting dramatic changes to the tasks of the driver, with the general aim of making driving environment safer. Before any of these technologies are implemented, empirical research is required to establish if these devices do, in fact, bring about the anticipated improvements. Initially, at least, simulated driving environments offer a means of conducting this research. The study reported here concentrates on the application of a vision enhancement (VE) system within the risk homeostasis paradigm. It was anticipated, in line with risk homeostasis theory, that drivers would compensate for the reduction in risk by increasing speed. The results support the hypothesis although, after a simulated failure of the VE system, drivers did reduce their speed due to reduced confidence in the reliability of the system
Combining social network analysis and the NATO Approach Space to define agility. Topic 2: networks and networking
This paper takes the NATO SAS-050 Approach Space, a widely accepted model of command and control, and gives each of its primary axes a quantitative measure using social network analysis. This means that the actual point in the approach space adopted by real-life command and control organizations can be plotted along with the way in which that point varies over time and function. Part 1 of the paper presents the rationale behind this innovation and how it was subject to verification using theoretical data. Part 2 shows how the enhanced approach space was put to use in the context of a large scale military command post exercise. Agility is represented by the number of distinct areas in the approach space that the organization was able to occupy and there was a marked disparity between where the organization thought it should be and where it actually was, furthermore, agility varied across function. The humans in this particular scenario bestowed upon the organization the levels of agility that were observed, thus the findings are properly considered from a socio-technical perspective
Adaptive driver modelling in ADAS to improve user acceptance: A study using naturalistic data
Accurate understanding of driver behaviour is crucial for future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. For user acceptance it is important that ADAS respect individual driving styles and adapt accordingly. Using data collected during a naturalistic driving study carried out at the University of Southampton, we assess existing models of driver acceleration and speed choice during car following and when cornering. We observe that existing models of driver behaviour that specify a preferred inter-vehicle spacing in car-following situations appear to be too prescriptive, with a wide range of acceptable spacings visible in the naturalistic data. Bounds on lateral acceleration during cornering from the literature are visible in the data, but appear to be influenced by the minimum cornering radii specified in design codes for UK roadway geometry. This analysis of existing driver models is used to suggest a small set of parameters that are sufficient to characterise driver behaviour in car-following and curve driving, which may be estimated in real-time by an ADAS to adapt to changing driver behaviour. MobGeoSen: facilitating personal geosensor data collection and visualization using mobile phones
Mobile sensing and mapping applications are becoming more prevalent because sensing hardware is becoming more portable and more affordable. However, most of the hardware uses small numbers of fixed sensors that report and share multiple sets of environmental data which raises privacy concerns. Instead, these systems can be decentralized and managed by individuals in their public and private spaces. This paper describes a robust system called MobGeoSens which enables individuals to monitor their local environment (e.g. pollution and temperature) and their private spaces (e.g. activities and health) by using mobile phones in their day to day life
