    Can One Make Any Crash Prediction in Finance Using the Local Hurst Exponent Idea?

    We apply the Hurst exponent idea for investigation of DJIA index time-series data. The behavior of the local Hurst exponent prior to drastic changes in financial series signal is analyzed. The optimal length of the time-window over which this exponent can be calculated in order to make some meaningful predictions is discussed. Our prediction hypothesis is verified with examples of '29 and '87 crashes, as well as with more recent phenomena in stock market from the period 1995-2003.Some interesting agreements are found.Comment: LaTeX 2e, 7 figures (included), 17 page

    Genetic Algorithm applied to the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem: an analysis of the influence of different encoding schemes on the population behavior

    Genetic Algorithm (GA) is an optimization method that has been widely used in the solution of NP-Hard (Non-deterministic Polynomial-time) problems, among which is the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), widely known in the literature due to its applications in the logistics and supply sectors, and which is considered in this work. However, finding solution for any optimization problem using GA presupposes the adoption of a solution encoding scheme that, according to the literature, impacts its performance. However, there is a lack of works in the literature exploring this theme. In this work we carry out an analysis of the main encoding schemes (binary and integer) employed in the GA for the solution of the capacitated VRP (CVRP), in order to evaluate the influence of each of them on the behavior of the GA population and, consequently, on the algorithm performance. To this end, we developed a computational tool that allows visualizing the GA individuals (solutions) mapped to a two-dimensional space. Based on the experiments conducted, we observed that, in general, integer vectors provide better conditions for GA individuals to explore the solution space, leading to better results. The results found, besides corroborating some assumptions in the literature, may justify the preference for integer encoding schemes to solve CVRP in recent literature works. In addition, this study can contribute to the choice and/or proposition of heuristics that allow GA to search for better quality solutions for the VRP with less computational effort

    Thesaurus as a complex network

    A thesaurus is one, out of many, possible representations of term (or word) connectivity. The terms of a thesaurus are seen as the nodes and their relationship as the links of a directed graph. The directionality of the links retains all the thesaurus information and allows the measurement of several quantities. This has lead to a new term classification according to the characteristics of the nodes, for example, nodes with no links in, no links out, etc. Using an electronic available thesaurus we have obtained the incoming and outgoing link distributions. While the incoming link distribution follows a stretched exponential function, the lower bound for the outgoing link distribution has the same envelope of the scientific paper citation distribution proposed by Albuquerque and Tsallis. However, a better fit is obtained by simpler function which is the solution of Ricatti's differential equation. We conjecture that this differential equation is the continuous limit of a stochastic growth model of the thesaurus network.     Critical Exponents for Nuclear Multifragmentation: dynamical lattice model

    We present a dynamical and dissipative lattice model, designed to mimic nuclear multifragmentation. Monte-Carlo simulations with this model show clear signature of critical behaviour and reproduce experimentally observed correlations. In particular, using techniques devised for finite systems, we could obtain two of its critical exponents, whose values are in agreement with those of the universality class to which nuclear multifragmentation is supposed to belong.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Nuclear Physics

    The anisotropic XY model on the inhomogeneous periodic chain

    The static and dynamic properties of the anisotropic XY-model (s=1/2)(s=1/2) on the inhomogeneous periodic chain, composed of NN cells with nn different exchange interactions and magnetic moments, in a transverse field h,h, are determined exactly at arbitrary temperatures. The properties are obtained by introducing the Jordan-Wigner fermionization and by reducing the problem to a diagonalization of a finite matrix of nthnth order. The quantum transitions are determined exactly by analyzing, as a function of the field, the induced magnetization 1/n\sum_{m=1}^{n}\mu_{m}\left (jj denotes the cell, mm the site within the cell, μm\mu_{m} the magnetic moment at site mm within the cell) and the spontaneous magnetization 1/n∑m=1n<Sj,mx,>1/n\sum_{m=1}^{n}\left< S_{j,m}^{x},\right> which is obtained from the correlations <Sj,mxSj+r,mx>\left< S_{j,m}^{x}S_{j+r,m}^{x}\right> for large spin separations. These results, which are obtained for infinite chains, correspond to an extension of the ones obtained by Tong and Zhong(\textit{Physica B} \textbf{304,}91 (2001)). The dynamic correlations, <Sj,mz(t)Sj′,m′z(0)>\left< S_{j,m}^{z}(t)S_{j^{\prime},m^{\prime}}^{z}(0)\right>, and the dynamic susceptibility, χqzz(ω),\chi_{q}^{zz}(\omega), are also obtained at arbitrary temperatures. Explicit results are presented in the limit T=0, where the critical behaviour occurs, for the static susceptibility χqzz(0)\chi_{q}^{zz}(0) as a function of the transverse field hh, and for the frequency dependency of dynamic susceptibility χqzz(ω)\chi_{q}^{zz}(\omega).Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 01 table.
