    ADEPOS: Anomaly Detection based Power Saving for Predictive Maintenance using Edge Computing

    In industry 4.0, predictive maintenance(PM) is one of the most important applications pertaining to the Internet of Things(IoT). Machine learning is used to predict the possible failure of a machine before the actual event occurs. However, the main challenges in PM are (a) lack of enough data from failing machines, and (b) paucity of power and bandwidth to transmit sensor data to cloud throughout the lifetime of the machine. Alternatively, edge computing approaches reduce data transmission and consume low energy. In this paper, we propose Anomaly Detection based Power Saving(ADEPOS) scheme using approximate computing through the lifetime of the machine. In the beginning of the machines life, low accuracy computations are used when the machine is healthy. However, on the detection of anomalies, as time progresses, the system is switched to higher accuracy modes. We show using the NASA bearing dataset that using ADEPOS, we need 8.8X less neurons on average and based on post-layout results, the resultant energy savings are 6.4 to 6.65XComment: Submitted to ASP-DAC 2019, Japa

    Frequency-domain "single-shot" (FDSS) ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy using compressed laser pulses. Part I. Basic treatment

    Single-shot ultrafast absorbance spectroscopy based on the frequency encoding of the kinetics is analyzed theoretically and implemented experimentally. The kinetics are sampled in the frequency domain using linearly chirped, amplified 33 fs FWHM pulses derived from a Ti:sapphire laser. A variable length grating pair compressor is used to achieve the time resolution of 500-1000 channels per a 2-to-160 ps window with sensitivity > 5x10-4. In terms of the acquisition time, FDSS has an advantage over the pump-probe spectroscopy in a situation when the "noise" is dominated by amplitude variations of the signal, due to the pump and flow instabilities. The possibilities of FDSS are illustrated with the kinetics obtained in multiphoton ionization of water and aqueous iodide and one-photon excitation of polycrystalline ZnSe and thin-film amorphous Si:H. Unlike other "single-shot" techniques, FDSS can be implemented for fluid samples flowing in a high-speed jet and for thin solid samples that exhibit interference fringes; no a priori knowledge of the excitation profile of the pump across the beam is needed. Another advantage is that due to the interference of quasimonochromatic components of the chirped probe pulse, an oscillation pattern near the origin of the FDSS kinetics emerges.     Numerical abilities are thought to rest on the integration of two distinct systems, a verbal system of number words and a non-symbolic representation of approximate quantities. This view has lead to the classification of acalculias into two broad categories depending on whether the deficit affects the verbal or the quantity system. Here, we test the association of deficits predicted by this theory, and particularly the presence or absence of impairments in non-symbolic quantity processing. We describe two acalculic patients, one with a focal lesion of the left parietal lobe and Gerstmann's syndrome and another with semantic dementia with predominantly left temporal hypometabolism. As predicted by a quantity deficit, the first patient was more impaired in subtraction than in multiplication, showed a severe slowness in approximation, and exhibited associated impairments in subitizing and numerical comparison tasks, both with Arabic digits and with arrays of dots. As predicted by a verbal deficit, the second patient was more impaired in multiplication than in subtraction, had intact approximation abilities, and showed preserved processing of non-symbolic numerosities

    Development of adenocarcinoma in chronic fistula in Crohn's disease

    The authors report the case of a 55 yr-old woman suffering from Crohn's disease since 31 years with stricture and fistulas developed in the ileocolic junction and anorectal portion. Long-standing anorectal fistulas and stricture led to adenocarcinoma and finally fistulisation in the vagina. Diagnosis was made by perineal examination with biopsies under general anaesthesia. Treatment was first posterior pelvectomy with resection of the anterior wall of vagina. Secondarily, radiochemotherapy was administrated. The authors discuss the incidence and risk factors of carcinoma in Crohn's disease with chronic fistulas

    Nuclear Glycolytic Enzyme Enolase of Toxoplasma Gondii Functions as a Transcriptional Regulator

    Apicomplexan parasites including Toxoplasma gondii have complex life cycles within different hosts and their infectivity relies on their capacity to regulate gene expression. However, little is known about the nuclear factors that regulate gene expression in these pathogens. Here, we report that T. gondii enolase TgENO2 is targeted to the nucleus of actively replicating parasites, where it specifically binds to nuclear chromatin in vivo. Using a ChIP-Seq technique, we provide evidence for TgENO2 enrichment at the 5′ untranslated gene regions containing the putative promoters of 241 nuclear genes. Ectopic expression of HA-tagged TgENO1 or TgENO2 led to changes in transcript levels of numerous gene targets. Targeted disruption of TgENO1 gene results in a decrease in brain cyst burden of chronically infected mice and in changes in transcript levels of several nuclear genes. Complementation of this knockout mutant with ectopic TgENO1-HA fully restored normal transcript levels. Our findings reveal that enolase functions extend beyond glycolytic activity and include a direct role in coordinating gene regulation in T. gondii
