Greek Young Children’s Engagement with Media in the Home: Parents’ and Children’s Perspectives
Recent developments in literacy studies suggest that everyday media experiences of children should be included and inform school literacy. In light of this, in the present study, we map children’s access and patterns of use, as well as children’s and parents’ stance and views on media. From the analysis of interviews with children and questionnaires with parents, it was made clear that children have rich media experiences in the home, having access to print, screen entertainment and digital media, whereas the presence of video games in Greek homes is more limited compared with other countries. Parents seem to be affected by the ‘moral panics’ often surrounding young children’s use of media. Moreover, our study indicated that families with a more privileged social and educational background seem to be more oriented to print and digital media than families with a lower social status. In contrast, families of lower social and educational background tend to be more oriented to screen entertainment media. On the other hand, some significant differences with respect to the children’s gender were disclosed, which seem to be linked to the social expectations and the distinct social roles of what means to ‘be a girl’ and ‘a boy’. In conclusion, we suggest that a study including both the perspectives of parents and children on the latter’s media activities in the home can better address the limitations of (self)-reporting and complement observational studies of literacy practices
Reasoning with Very Expressive Fuzzy Description Logics
It is widely recognized today that the management of imprecision and
vagueness will yield more intelligent and realistic knowledge-based
applications. Description Logics (DLs) are a family of knowledge representation
languages that have gained considerable attention the last decade, mainly due
to their decidability and the existence of empirically high performance of
reasoning algorithms. In this paper, we extend the well known fuzzy ALC DL to
the fuzzy SHIN DL, which extends the fuzzy ALC DL with transitive role axioms
(S), inverse roles (I), role hierarchies (H) and number restrictions (N). We
illustrate why transitive role axioms are difficult to handle in the presence
of fuzzy interpretations and how to handle them properly. Then we extend these
results by adding role hierarchies and finally number restrictions. The main
contributions of the paper are the decidability proof of the fuzzy DL languages
fuzzy-SI and fuzzy-SHIN, as well as decision procedures for the knowledge base
satisfiability problem of the fuzzy-SI and fuzzy-SHIN
CultureLabs: Cultural heritage and digital technology at the service of social innovation
Studies and practice in the cultural field have long acknowledged the importance of participatory approaches for engaging visitors of cultural institutions, however, it is only recently that we are talking about steps to connecting institutional heritage with civic initiatives that can aid social cohesion and community empowerment. In dialogue with ongoing practices in this context, CultureLabs aims to develop novel methodologies and digital tools that can facilitate the organisation and wider deployment of participatory projects around cultural her - itage, focusing on the social inclusion of disadvantaged groups, and particularly of migrant communities. As a first step in this process, the CultureLabs team has conducted a series of interviews and surveys with the aim to identify and analyse the organisational needs and lessons learnt by different actors from the cultural, social, educational and public administration fields as well as the needs and viewpoints of different migrant communities. These needs have guided the design of an innovative online platform which seeks to offer a number of services for supporting more efficient and participatory governance of cultural heritage on one hand and for enabling inclusive and creative interactions with digital cultural heritage on the other. The CultureLabs platform will allow multiple and diverse stakeholders to discover and combine differ - ent resources and elements of best practices, the "ingredients", in order to form new "recipes" for social innovation according to their own needs and objectives
Multimedia Annotations on the Semantic Web
Multimedia in all forms (images, video, graphics, music, speech) is exploding on the Web. The content needs to be annotated and indexed to enable effective search and retrieval. However, recent standards and best practices for multimedia metadata don't provide semantically rich descriptions of multimedia content. On the other hand, the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) Semantic Web effort has been making great progress in advancing techniques for annotating semantics of Web resources. To bridge this gap, a new W3C task force has been created to investigate multimedia annotations on the Semantic Web. This article examines the problems of semantically annotating multimedia and describes the integration of multimedia metadata with the Semantic Web. (Editor's note by John R. Smith)
Towards explainable evaluation of language models on the semantic similarity of visual concepts
Recent breakthroughs in NLP research, such as the advent of Transformer
models have indisputably contributed to major advancements in several tasks.
However, few works research robustness and explainability issues of their
evaluation strategies. In this work, we examine the behavior of high-performing
pre-trained language models, focusing on the task of semantic similarity for
visual vocabularies. First, we address the need for explainable evaluation
metrics, necessary for understanding the conceptual quality of retrieved
instances. Our proposed metrics provide valuable insights in local and global
level, showcasing the inabilities of widely used approaches. Secondly,
adversarial interventions on salient query semantics expose vulnerabilities of
opaque metrics and highlight patterns in learned linguistic representations
A preliminary study on the effects Cu, Pb and Zn contamination of soils on community structure and certain life-history traits of oribatids from urban areas
ABSTRACT The effect of pollution of urban softs by traffic exhausts on oribatid mites was studied along a traffic gradient of the city of Thessaloniki. Although the population density of the main orbatid species appeared increased in polluted areas, the total oribatid numbers were reduced due to the reduction in species richness. The highest species diversity was recorded in moderately polluted areas. The morphometric characteristics as well as certain life-history traits did no correlate with the level of traffic influence. Nevertheless, these characteristics were considered important for the understanding of the pollution impact on life in soils. Moderate body size, sexual reproduction, increased reproductive effort and wide habitat preferences characterize species in urban sites. Scheloribates latipes and Tectocepheus sarekensis can be used as bioindicators for Pb and Zn pollution of softs, respectively
