Numerical study on hygroscopic material drying in packed bed
The paper addresses numerical simulation for the case of convective drying of hygroscopic material in a packed bed, analyzing agreement between the simulated and the corresponding experimental results. In the simulation model of unsteady simultaneous one-dimensional heat and mass transfer between gas phase and dried material, it is assumed that the gas-solid interface is at thermodynamic equilibrium, while the drying rate of the specific product is calculated by applying the concept of a "drying coefficient". Model validation was clone on the basis of the experimental data obtained with potato cubes. The obtained drying kinetics, both experimental and numerical, show that higher gas (drying agent) velocities (flow-rates), as well as lower equivalent grain diameters, induce faster drying. This effect is more pronounced for deeper beds, because of the larger amount of wet material to be dried using the same drying agent capacity
The urinary dehydroepiandrosterone, androsterone and etiocholanolone excretion of healthy women and women with benign and malignant breast disease
The 24‐h urinary excretion of dehydroepiandrosterone, androsterone and etiocholanolone was followed in healthy women (n = 50) and in women with benign‐fibroadenoma (w = 32), microcysts (n= 32), macrocysts (n= 25) and malignant (n = 35) breast disease aged 35–50‐years. The data were analysed in three groups each covering 5 years (35‐39, 40–44 and 45–49). A significant decrease in the excretion of ethiocholanolone and dehydroepiandrosterone was found in women with benign and malignant breast disease when compared to controls. There was no significant decrease in androsterone excretion in women with benign and malignant breast disease when compared to a control group. A high correlation was found between excretion of etiocholanolone and its precursor dehydroepiandrosterone both in women with benign‐fibroadenoma (r= 0–7683) or macrocysts (r= 0–7337) and in women with malignant (r= 0–805) breast disease. Dehydroepiandrosterone and, in particular, etiocholanolone excretions were found to decrease significantly with age in women affected by malignant breast disease
Visualising the politics of appearance in times of democratisation: An analysis of the 2010 Belgrade Pride Parade television coverage
The 2010 Belgrade Pride Parade represents a critical moment in the story of Serbia’s democratisation process and highlights the threat that right-wing extremism poses to democratic rights and personal freedoms. Through a focus on patterns of visibility and visuality in the coverage of different protagonists in the streets of Belgrade, we explore the ways in which distinct communities perform their affinities, their right to be seen in public spaces, and rejection of ‘the other’. We conduct a visual framing analysis across four news programmes (RTS, Prva TV, TV B92 and Pink TV), emphasising the stylistic-semiotic choices which work to construct the contested spaces of the city. In shifting attention to how the news images work to create the spaces of political ‘appearance’ and the potentials for political agency through mediated visibility, the article explores the uneasy ambivalence of the democratisation process for authorities and the resulting marginalisation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in news coverage
