Star Formation in the Milky Way and Nearby Galaxies
We review progress over the past decade in observations of large-scale star
formation, with a focus on the interface between extragalactic and Galactic
studies. Methods of measuring gas contents and star formation rates are
discussed, and updated prescriptions for calculating star formation rates are
provided. We review relations between star formation and gas on scales ranging

Massive star formation in 100,000 years from turbulent and pressurized molecular clouds
Massive stars (with mass m_* > 8 solar masses) are fundamental to the
evolution of galaxies, because they produce heavy elements, inject energy into
the interstellar medium, and possibly regulate the star formation rate. The
individual star formation time, t_*f, determines the accretion rate of the
star; the value of the former quantity is currently uncertain by many orders of
magnitude, leading to other astrophysical questions. For example, the variation
of t_*f with stellar mass dictates whether massive stars can form
simultaneously with low-mass stars in clusters. Here we show that t_*f is
determined by conditions in the star's natal cloud, and is typically ~10^5 yr.
The corresponding mass accretion rate depends on the pressure within the cloud
- which we relate to the gas surface density - and on both the instantaneous
and final stellar masses. Characteristic accretion rates are sufficient to
overcome radiation pressure from ~100 solar mass protostars, while
simultaneously driving intense bipolar gas outflows. The weak dependence of
t_*f on the final mass of the star allows high- and low-mass star formation to

A disk of dust and molecular gas around a high-mass protostar
The processes leading to the birth of low-mass stars such as our Sun have
been well studied, but the formation of high-mass (> 8 x Sun's mass) stars has
heretofore remained poorly understood. Recent observational studies suggest
that high-mass stars may form in essentially the same way as low-mass stars,
namely via an accretion process, instead of via merging of several low-mass (<
8 Msun) stars. However, there is as yet no conclusive evidence. Here, we report
the discovery of a flattened disk-like structure observed at submillimeter
wavelengths, centered on a massive 15 Msun protostar in the Cepheus-A region.
The disk, with a radius of about 330 astronomical units (AU) and a mass of 1 to
8 Msun, is detected in dust continuum as well as in molecular line emission.
Its perpendicular orientation to, and spatial coincidence with the central
embedded powerful bipolar radio jet, provides the best evidence yet that
massive stars form via disk accretion in direct analogy to the formation of
low-mass stars
Substance abuse treatment and psychiatric comorbidity: do benefits spill over? analysis of data from a prospective trial among cocaine-dependent homeless persons
BACKGROUND: Comorbid psychiatric illness can undermine outcomes among homeless persons undergoing addiction treatment, and psychiatric specialty care is not always readily available. The prognosis for nonsubstance abuse psychiatric diagnoses among homeless persons receiving behaviorally-based addiction treatment, however, is little studied. RESULTS: Data from an addiction treatment trial for 95 cocaine-dependent homeless persons (1996–1998) were used to profile psychiatric diagnoses at baseline and 6 months, including mood-related disorders (e.g. depression) and anxiety-related disorders (e.g. post-traumatic stress disorder). Treatment interventions, including systematic reinforcement for goal attainment, were behavioral in orientation. There was a 32% reduction in the prevalence of comorbid non-addiction psychiatric disorder from baseline to 6 months, with similar reductions in the prevalence of mood (-32%) and anxiety-related disorders (-20%) (p = 0.12). CONCLUSION: Among cocaine-dependent homeless persons with psychiatric comorbidity undergoing behavioral addiction treatment, a reduction in comorbid psychiatric disorder prevalence was observed over 6 months. Not all participants improved, suggesting that even evidence-based addiction treatment will prove insufficient for a meaningful proportion of the dually diagnosed homeless population
Access to housing subsidies, housing status, drug use and HIV risk among low-income U.S. urban residents
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Much research has shown an association between homelessness and unstable housing and HIV risk but most has relied on relatively narrow definitions of housing status that preclude a deeper understanding of this relationship. Fewer studies have examined access to housing subsidies and supportive housing programs among low-income populations with different personal characteristics. This paper explores personal characteristics associated with access to housing subsidies and supportive housing, the relationship between personal characteristics and housing status, and the relationship between housing status and sexual risk behaviors among low-income urban residents.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Surveys were conducted with 392 low-income residents from Hartford and East Harford, Connecticut through a targeted sampling plan. We measured personal characteristics (income, education, use of crack, heroin, or cocaine in the last 6 months, receipt of welfare benefits, mental illness diagnosis, arrest, criminal conviction, longest prison term served, and self-reported HIV diagnosis); access to housing subsidies or supportive housing programs; current housing status; and sexual risk behaviors. To answer the aims above, we performed univariate analyses using Chi-square or 2-sided ANOVA's. Those with significance levels above (0.10) were included in multivariate analyses. We performed 2 separate multiple regressions to determine the effects of personal characteristics on access to housing subsidies and access to supportive housing respectively. We used multinomial main effects logistic regression to determine the effects of housing status on sexual risk behavior.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Being HIV positive or having a mental illness predicted access to housing subsidies and supportive housing, while having a criminal conviction was not related to access to either housing subsidies or supportive housing. Drug use was associated with poorer housing statuses such as living on the street or in a shelter, or temporarily doubling up with friends, acquaintances or sex partners. Living with friends, acquaintances or sex partners was associated with greater sexual risk than those living on the street or in other stable housing situations.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Results suggest that providing low-income and supportive housing may be an effective structural HIV prevention intervention, but that the availability and accessibility of these programs must be increased.</p
The First Stars
The first stars to form in the Universe -- the so-called Population III stars
-- bring an end to the cosmological Dark Ages, and exert an important influence
on the formation of subsequent generations of stars and on the assembly of the
first galaxies. Developing an understanding of how and when the first
Population III stars formed and what their properties were is an important goal
of modern astrophysical research. In this review, I discuss our current
understanding of the physical processes involved in the formation of Population
III stars. I show how we can identify the mass scale of the first dark matter
halos to host Population III star formation, and discuss how gas undergoes
gravitational collapse within these halos, eventually reaching protostellar
densities. I highlight some of the most important physical processes occurring
during this collapse, and indicate the areas where our current understanding
remains incomplete. Finally, I discuss in some detail the behaviour of the gas
after the formation of the first Population III protostar. I discuss both the
conventional picture, where the gas does not undergo further fragmentation and
the final stellar mass is set by the interplay between protostellar accretion
and protostellar feedback, and also the recently advanced picture in which the
gas does fragment and where dynamical interactions between fragments have an

Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are the sites of star formation in the Galaxy. Many of their properties can be understood in terms of a model in which the GMCs and the star-forming clumps within them are in approximate pressure equilibrium, with turbulent motions treated as a separate pressure component
Effectiveness of interventions to improve the health and housing status of homeless people: a rapid systematic review
Background: Research on interventions to positively impact health and housing status of people who are homeless has received substantially increased attention over the past 5 years. This rapid review examines recent evidence regarding interventions that have been shown to improve the health of homeless people, with particular
focus on the effect of these interventions on housing status.
Methods: A total of 1,546 articles were identified by a structured search of five electronic databases, a hand search of grey literature and relevant journals, and contact with experts. Two reviewers independently screened the first 10% of titles and abstracts for relevance. Inter-rater reliability was high and as a result only one reviewer screened the remaining titles and abstracts. Articles were included if they were published between January 2004 and December 2009 and examined the effectiveness of an intervention to improve the health or healthcare utilization
of people who were homeless, marginally housed, or at risk of homelessness. Two reviewers independently scored all relevant articles for quality.
Results: Eighty-four relevant studies were identified; none were of strong quality while ten were rated of moderate quality. For homeless people with mental illness, provision of housing upon hospital discharge was effective in improving sustained housing. For homeless people with substance abuse issues or concurrent
disorders, provision of housing was associated with decreased substance use, relapses from periods of substance abstinence, and health services utilization, and increased housing tenure. Abstinent dependent housing was more effective in supporting housing status, substance abstinence, and improved psychiatric outcomes than non-abstinence dependent housing or no housing. Provision of housing also improved health outcomes among homeless populations with HIV. Health promotion programs can decrease risk behaviours among homeless populations.
Conclusions: These studies provide important new evidence regarding interventions to improve health, housing status, and access to healthcare for homeless populations. The additional studies included in this current review provide further support for earlier evidence which found that coordinated treatment programs for homeless
persons with concurrent mental illness and substance misuse issues usually result in better health and access to healthcare than usual care. This review also provides a synthesis of existing evidence regarding interventions that specifically support homeless populations with HIV.Partial funding for this paper was provided to the Effective Public Health Practice Project by the Region of Peel, Canada
