Qualification model spacecraft tests for DEMP, SGEMP, and ESD effects

    Get PDF
The development of a satellite design demonstration test program is described. The test approach is comprehensive in that it includes the effects from electrostatic discharge (ESD), system generated electromagnetic pulse (SGEMP), as well as dispersed electromagnetic pulses (DEMP). The comprehensive test concept is based on the similarity of the satellite's response to several environments

Neuroactive compounds in the brain of the honeybee during imaginal life.

    1. In the brains of worker honeybees (Apis mellifera carnica) corresponding to different stages in the life span, we measured the content of GABA, glutamate, acetylcholine, eholine, norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. 2. The highest concentrations were found for GABA, glutamate and acetylcholine. 3. Biogenic amines occur in considerably lower concentrations in comparison to the above mentioned transmitters. 4. Age-correlated changes were found for different neuroactive substances. 5. GABA and glutamate show a well marked rise and fall of their concentrations with a maximum at day 10. 6. The results are discussed in comparison to other species and with respect to age polyethism of worker honeybees

A New Treatment of 2N and 3N Bound States in Three Dimensions

The direct treatment of the Faddeev equation for the three-boson system in 3 dimensions is generalized to nucleons. The one Faddeev equation for identical bosons is replaced by a strictly finite set of coupled equations for scalar functions which depend only on 3 variables. The spin-momentum dependence occurring as scalar products in 2N and 3N forces accompanied by scalar functions is supplemented by a corresponding expansion of the Faddeev amplitudes. After removing the spin degrees of freedom by suitable operations only scalar expressions depending on momenta remain. The corresponding steps are performed for the deuteron leading to two coupled equations.Comment: 19 page

Covariant equations for the three-body bound state

The covariant spectator (or Gross) equations for the bound state of three identical spin 1/2 particles, in which two of the three interacting particles are always on shell, are developed and reduced to a form suitable for numerical solution. The equations are first written in operator form and compared to the Bethe-Salpeter equation, then expanded into plane wave momentum states, and finally expanded into partial waves using the three-body helicity formalism first introduced by Wick. In order to solve the equations, the two-body scattering amplitudes must be boosted from the overall three-body rest frame to their individual two-body rest frames, and all effects which arise from these boosts, including the Wigner rotations and rho-spin decomposition of the off-shell particle, are treated exactly. In their final form, the equations reduce to a coupled set of Faddeev-like double integral equations with additional channels arising from the negative rho-spin states of the off-shell particle.Comment: 57 pages, RevTeX, 6 figures, uses epsf.st

Optimal quantum control in nanostructures: Theory and application to generic three-level system

Coherent carrier control in quantum nanostructures is studied within the framework of Optimal Control. We develop a general solution scheme for the optimization of an external control (e.g., lasers pulses), which allows to channel the system's wavefunction between two given states in its most efficient way; physically motivated constraints, such as limited laser resources or population suppression of certain states, can be accounted for through a general cost functional. Using a generic three-level scheme for the quantum system, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and identify the pertinent calculation and convergence parameters.Comment: 7 pages; to appear in Phys. The alpha-particle based on modern nuclear forces

    Get PDF
The Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations for the alpha-particle are solved. Accurate results are obtained for several modern NN interaction models, which include charge-symmetry breaking effects in the NN force, nucleon mass dependences as well as the Coulomb interaction. These models are augmented by three-nucleon forces of different types and adjusted to the 3N binding energy. Our results are close to the experimental binding energy with a slight overbinding. Thus there is only little room left for the contribution of possible 4N interactions to the alpha-particle binding energy. We also discuss model dependences of the binding energies and the wave functions.Comment: 22 pages REVTeX 4, 12 figures, table with TM parameters added, typos corrected, version as published in PR

HOXA13 Is Essential for Placental Vascular Patterning and Labyrinth Endothelial Specification

In eutherian mammals, embryonic growth and survival is dependent on the formation of the placenta, an organ that facilitates the efficient exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and metabolic waste between the maternal and fetal blood supplies. Key to the placenta's function is the formation of its vascular labyrinth, a series of finely branched vessels whose molecular ontogeny remains largely undefined. In this report, we demonstrate that HOXA13 plays an essential role in labyrinth vessel formation. In the absence of HOXA13 function, placental endothelial cell morphology is altered, causing a loss in vessel wall integrity, edema of the embryonic blood vessels, and mid-gestational lethality. Microarray analysis of wild-type and mutant placentas revealed significant changes in endothelial gene expression profiles. Notably, pro-vascular genes, including Tie2 and Foxf1, exhibited reduced expression in the mutant endothelia, which also exhibited elevated expression of genes normally expressed in lymphatic or sinusoidal endothelia. ChIP analysis of HOXA13–DNA complexes in the placenta confirmed that HOXA13 binds the Tie2 and Foxf1 promoters in vivo. In vitro, HOXA13 binds sequences present in the Tie2 and Foxf1 promoters with high affinity (Kd = 27–42 nM) and HOXA13 can use these bound promoter regions to direct gene expression. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that HOXA13 directly regulates Tie2 and Foxf1 in the placental labyrinth endothelia, providing a functional explanation for the mid-gestational lethality exhibited by Hoxa13 mutant embryos as well as a novel transcriptional program necessary for the specification of the labyrinth vascular endothelia

Conference Discussion of the Nuclear Force

Discussion of the nuclear force, lead by a round table consisting of T. Cohen, E. Epelbaum, R. Machleidt, and F. Gross (chair). After an invited talk by Machleidt, published elsewhere in these proceedings, brief remarks are made by Epelbaum, Cohen, and Gross, followed by discussion from the floor moderated by the chair. The chair asked the round table and the participants to focus on the following issues: (i) What does each approach (chiral effective field theory, large Nc, and relativistic phenomenology) contribute to our knowledge of the nuclear force? Do we need them all? Is any one transcendent? (ii) How important for applications (few body, nuclear structure, EMC effect, for example) are precise fits to the NN data below 350 MeV? How precise do these fits have to be? (iii) Can we learn anything about nonperturbative QCD from these studies of the nuclear force? The discussion presented here is based on a video recording made at the conference and transcribed afterward.Comment: Discussion at the 21st European Conference on Few Body Problems (EFP21) held at Salamanca, Spain, 30 Aug - 3 Sept 201

A Three-Dimensional Treatment of the Three-Nucleon Bound State

Recently a formalism for a direct treatment of the Faddeev equation for the three-nucleon bound state in three dimensions has been proposed. It relies on an operator representation of the Faddeev component in the momentum space and leads to a finite set of coupled equations for scalar functions which depend only on three variables. In this paper we provide further elements of this formalism and show the first numerical results for chiral NNLO nuclear forces.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures (34 eps files
