Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Correlates of Condom Use among Young Adults from Continuation High Schools
Background and Purpose: Youth from continuation high schools (CHS) exhibit riskier sexual behaviors than other high school youth, yet the associations between intrapersonal and interpersonal constructs and condom-using behavior are not fully understood within this population. It is unknown which of these variables may be more strongly associated with condom use. This study explored the effects of parentadolescent communication, perceived HIV susceptibility, condom use peer norms, and condom use selfefficacy on lifetime and recent condom use and the potential moderating effects by gender and Latino ethnicity. Methods: A non-experimental study was conducted with 111 CHS young adults in Southern California who previously participated in a substance abuse prevention intervention. Ordinal logistic regression models assessed the associations between each construct and condom use and included interaction terms by gender and Latino ethnicity. Results: Parent-adolescent communication during adolescence and within the past 6 months as well as peer norms that support condom use were significantly associated with lifetime and recent condom use. Perceived HIV risk and condom use selfefficacy showed no effect. Relationships were not moderated by gender or Latino ethnicity. Conclusion: Findings highlight the salutary influence of parents and peers on personal condom use. Future research should explore intrapersonal factors that may motivate consistent condom use
Beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) acoustic foraging behavior and applications for long term monitoring

Plos One, 16(11), (2021): e0260485, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0260485.Cook Inlet, Alaska, is home to an endangered and declining population of 279 belugas (Delphinapterus leucas). Recovery efforts highlight a paucity of basic ecological knowledge, impeding the correct assessment of threats and the development of recovery actions. In particular, information on diet and foraging habitat is very limited for this population. Passive acoustic monitoring has proven to be an efficient approach to monitor beluga distribution and seasonal occurrence. Identifying acoustic foraging behavior could help address the current gap in information on diet and foraging habitat. To address this conservation challenge, eight belugas from a comparative, healthy population in Bristol Bay, Alaska, were instrumented with a multi-sensor tag (DTAG), a satellite tag, and a stomach temperature transmitter in August 2014 and May 2016. DTAG deployments provided 129.6 hours of data including foraging and social behavioral states. A total of 68 echolocation click trains ending in terminal buzzes were identified during successful prey chasing and capture, as well as during social interactions. Of these, 37 click trains were successfully processed to measure inter-click intervals (ICI) and ICI trend in their buzzing section. Terminal buzzes with short ICI (minimum ICI <8.98 ms) and consistently decreasing ICI trend (ICI increment range <1.49 ms) were exclusively associated with feeding behavior. This dual metric was applied to acoustic data from one acoustic mooring within the Cook Inlet beluga critical habitat as an example of the application of detecting feeding in long-term passive acoustic monitoring data. This approach allowed description of the relationship between beluga presence, feeding occurrence, and the timing of spawning runs by different species of anadromous fish. Results reflected a clear preference for the Susitna River delta during eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus), Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), and coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) salmon spawning run periods, with increased feeding occurrence at the peak of the Chinook and pink salmon runs.Project funding was provided by Georgia Aquarium, the Marine Mammal Laboratory of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (MML/AFSC). Multi-Disciplinary Experts Supporting Graduate Medical Education through Participation in COMPLETE Chart Rounds
Learning Objective: As a result of this presentation, attendees will learn skills that they can use to implement collaborative graduate medical education learning experiences using a community of multi-disciplinary professionals within their own institutions.
Background: Inter-professional Chart Rounds were implemented to provide residents an opportunity to review and present patient cases utilizing “COMPLETE” guidelines developed by residency leadership as the result of a “Regional Medicine – Public Health Education Centers” grant. COMPLETE guidelines explicitly direct residents to include consideration of:
- Context – Culture of context – who is the patient? - Outside Visitors/Resources – incorporate visitors/experts such as librarians, pharmacists and psychologists and utilize their resources - Mental Health – assess behavioral health aspects of the case - Population Perspective – address prevalence of the condition in the community - Learn From Others – consider specialists, home care, and complementary therapies - Expectations – clear goals set between physician and patient - Time – Start on time, end on time. Respect everyone’s time. - End with “Culture of Continuity” – what are the key lessons? Is there a follow-up plan?
Through the attendance of librarians, psychologists, pharmacologists, medical students and other faculty, discussion ensues which leads to continued resident education and support.
Methods: Chart Rounds are held daily at each residency practice site. Residents are required to attend along with medical and pharmacy students rotating at the centers. The preceptor leads Chart Rounds and other faculty physicians join as they are able. Residents present cases while maintaining patient confidentiality. The preceptor leads the group discussion of the case. Faculty members discuss clinical and administrative implications, the psychologist addresses potential behavioral aspects of the case, the librarian searches for Evidence-Based information to support decisions and the pharmacologist advises on medication management. The group also discusses how individual patient care reflects the public health needs and profile of the community. Residents (n=32) were invited to complete a survey asking them to evaluate their experience with multi-disciplinary COMPLETE Chart Rounds.
Results: Survey results as well as observational analysis will be used to improve the resident’s experience at Chart Rounds with the goal of making this experience an even more rewarding collaborative educational experience. Some sample findings include:
- 66% of residents report satisfaction of Chart Rounds challenging the academic aspects of their work - 100% of residents in the early portion of their program report that Chart Rounds assists them in building collaborative relationships with faculty and other providers/experts - Residents report the greatest satisfaction (92% overall) with pharmacist participation in Chart Rounds across all Post Graduate Years - Satisfaction with librarian participation increases through each year (from only 10% in PGY1 to over 60% in PGY3) , possibly due to limited exposure early in the program
Although these guidelines were developed for use in a Family Medicine Graduate Medical Education program and fit well into this practice model, the findings can be utilized in other resident training programs.

The PAndAS View of the Andromeda Satellite System. IV Global properties
We build a statistical framework to infer the global properties of the
satellite system of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) from the properties of
individual dwarf galaxies located in the Pan-Andromeda Archaelogical Survey
(PAndAS) and the previously determined completeness of the survey. Using
forward modeling, we infer the slope of the luminosity function of the
satellite system, the slope of its spatial density distribution, and the
size-luminosity relation followed by the dwarf galaxies. We find that the slope
of the luminosity function is . Combined with the spatial
density profile, it implies that, when accounting for survey incompleteness,
M31 hosts dwarf galaxies with and a
sky-projected distance from M31 between 30 and 300kpc. We conclude that many
faint or distant dwarf galaxies remain to be discovered around Andromeda,
especially outside the PAndAS footprint. Finally, we use our model to test if
the higher number of satellites situated in the hemisphere facing the Milky Way
could be explained simply by the detection limits of dwarf galaxy searches. We
rule this out at confidence and conclude that this anisotropy is an
intrinsic feature of the M31 satellite system. The statistical framework we
present here is a powerful tool to robustly constrain the properties of a
satellite system and compare those across hosts, especially considering the
upcoming start of the Euclid or Rubin large photometric surveys that are
expected to uncover a large number of dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume.Comment: Submitted to ApJ - 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 table
Attentional bias retraining in cigarette smokers attempting smoking cessation (ARTS): study protocol for a double bline randomised controlled trial
YesSmokers attend preferentially to cigarettes and other smoking-related cues in the environment, in what is
known as an attentional bias. There is evidence that attentional bias may contribute to craving and failure to stop smoking.
Attentional retraining procedures have been used in laboratory studies to train smokers to reduce attentional bias, although
these procedures have not been applied in smoking cessation programmes. This trial will examine the efficacy of multiple
sessions of attentional retraining on attentional bias, craving, and abstinence in smokers attempting cessation.
This is a double-blind randomised controlled trial. Adult smokers attending a 7-session weekly stop
smoking clinic will be randomised to either a modified visual probe task with attentional retraining or placebo training.
Training will start 1 week prior to quit day and be given weekly for 5 sessions. Both groups will receive 21 mg transdermal
nicotine patches for 8–12 weeks and withdrawal-orientated behavioural support for 7 sessions. Primary outcome measures
are the change in attentional bias reaction time and urge to smoke on the Mood and Physical Symptoms Scale at 4 weeks
post-quit. Secondary outcome measures include differences in withdrawal, time to first lapse and prolonged abstinence at
4 weeks post-quit, which will be biochemically validated at each clinic visit. Follow-up will take place at 8 weeks, 3 months
and 6 months post-quit.
This is the first randomised controlled trial of attentional retraining in smokers attempting cessation.

What is Learned from Longitudinal Studies of Advertising and Youth Drinking and Smoking? A Critical Assessment
This paper assesses the methodology employed in longitudinal studies of advertising and youth drinking and smoking behaviors. These studies often are given a causal interpretation in the psychology and public health literatures. Four issues are examined from the perspective of econometrics. First, specification and validation of empirical models. Second, empirical issues associated with measures of advertising receptivity and exposure. Third, potential endogeneity of receptivity and exposure variables. Fourth, sample selection bias in baseline and follow-up surveys. Longitudinal studies reviewed include 20 studies of youth drinking and 26 studies of youth smoking. Substantial shortcomings are found in the studies, which preclude a causal interpretation
La soberanía alimentaria: Cultivando nuevas alianzas entre campo, bosque y ciudad
In June, 2008, we convoked a forum and workshop in Chiapas, Mexico to strengthen alliances among farmers’ organizations, conservationists and academics. Speakers outlined the evolution of the relations among production systems, forests and biodiversity from the prehispanic era through the current crisis in the neoliberal economic model and industrial agriculture. They also framed a new conservation paradigm that prioritizes the role of farmers. We formed working groups that elaborated proposals for collaboration among the participating sectors. Cooperative networks emerged as appropriate structures for coordinating action and facilitating the exchange of information and support at various geographic scales. Solidarity-based markets are a venue where diverse interests converge, favoring the formation of such networks. We also identified some specific issues for collaboration, including: agrofuels and energy sovereignty, environmental services and rural education. Biodiversity and food sovereignty are the two axes of this agenda for cooperation that forms part of an international struggle to reconstruct our food systems.En junio de 2008 convocamos un foro-taller en Chiapas, México para potencializar alianzas entre organizaciones campesinas, conservacionistas y académicos. También delinearon un nuevo paradigma para la conservación en donde los campesinos son protagonistas. En grupos de trabajo, elaboramos propuestas para cimentar una agenda común entre los distintos sectores representados. Las redes de cooperación emergieron como estructuras para coordinar acción y facilitar el intercambio de información y apoyo a distintas escalas geográficas. Los mercados solidarios son la confluencia de diversos intereses en dónde se pueden constituir dichas redes. También identificamos algunos temas específicos de trabajo, entre ellos: los agrocombustibles y la soberanía energética, los servicios ambientales y la educación para el campo. La biodiversidad y la soberanía alimentaria y territorial son los ejes de esta agenda de cooperación, que forma parte de una lucha internacional para reconstruir nuestros sistemas alimenticios
Association of alpha-aminoadipic acid with cardiometabolic risk factors in healthy and high-risk individuals
IntroductionPlasma levels of the metabolite alpha-aminoadipic acid (2-AAA) have been associated with risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and atherosclerosis. However, little is known about the relationship of 2-AAA to other cardiometabolic risk markers in pre-disease states, or in the setting of comorbid disease.MethodsWe measured circulating 2-AAA using two methods in 1) a sample of 261 healthy individuals (2-AAA Study), and 2) in a sample of 134 persons comprising 110 individuals with treated HIV, with or without T2D, a population at high risk of metabolic disease and cardiovascular events despite suppression of circulating virus, and 24 individuals with T2D without HIV (HATIM Study). We examined associations between plasma 2-AAA and markers of cardiometabolic health within each cohort.Results and discussionWe observed differences in 2-AAA by sex and race in both cohorts, with higher levels observed in men compared with women, and in Asian compared with Black or white individuals (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in 2-AAA by HIV status within individuals with T2D in the HATIM Study. We confirmed associations between 2-AAA and dyslipidemia in both cohorts, where high 2-AAA associated with low HDL cholesterol (P<0.001) and high triglycerides (P<0.05). As expected, within the cohort of people with HIV, 2-AAA was higher in the setting of T2D compared to pre-diabetes or normoglycemia (P<0.001). 2-AAA was positively associated with body mass index (BMI) in the 2-AAA Study, and with waist circumference and measures of visceral fat volume in HATIM (all P<0.05). Further, 2-AAA associated with increased liver fat in persons with HIV (P<0.001). Our study confirms 2-AAA as a marker of cardiometabolic risk in both healthy individuals and those at high cardiometabolic risk, reveals relationships with adiposity and hepatic steatosis, and highlights important differences by sex and race. Further studies are warranted to establish molecular mechanisms linking 2-AAA to disease in other high-risk populations
Gas dynamics in tidal dwarf galaxies : disc formation at z=0
Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are recycled objects that form within the collisional debris of interacting/merging galaxies. They are expected to be devoid of non-baryonic dark matter, since they can form only from dissipative material ejected from the discs of the progenitor galaxies. We investigate the gas dynamics in a sample of six bona-fide TDGs around three interacting and post-interacting systems: NGC 4694, NGC 5291, and NGC 7252 ("Atoms for Peace"). For NGC 4694 and NGC 5291 we analyse existing HI data from the Very Large Array (VLA), while for NGC 7252 we present new HI observations from the Jansky VLA together with long-slit and integral-field optical spectroscopy. For all six TDGs, the HI emission can be described by rotating disc models. These HI discs, however, have undergone less than a full rotation since the time of the interaction/merger event, raising the question of whether they are in dynamical equilibrium. Assuming that these discs are in equilibrium, the inferred dynamical masses are consistent with the observed baryonic masses, implying that TDGs are devoid of dark matter. This puts constraints on putative "dark discs" (either baryonic or non-baryonic) in the progenitor galaxies. Moreover, TDGs seem to systematically deviate from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. These results provide a challenging test for alternative theories like MOND.Peer reviewe
